I don't get why people place Mindfang in the same category as the Condesce, the Grand Highblood, or Dualscar.
Those three are the ones upholding and benefiting from Alternia's fascistic, genocidal empire. The Condesce is essentially sea-Hitler; the Grand Highblood enforces that regime through terror, and Dualscar/Darkleer abuses their position within it. Redglare doesn't apprehend Mindfang because she is a good person, she apprehends her because the clown who serves Sea-Hitler told her to. They are the architects and beneficiaries of the system and will do anything, even using a dragon to burn down rebellion ships, to enforce that authority. I always found it weird that in this context, people will root for a cop who serves under a nazi regime, over a pirate who goes against it and in future, will raise the sectarian revolt against it. What happened to ACAB.
Mindfang is a pirate who deliberately makes herself the antithesis of the Empire. She rejects its authority, lives outside its laws, and spends far longer rebelling against Alternia than the Signless was even alive. Calling her morally equivalent to the people running the empire ignores the role she actually plays in the narrative.
And then there's the irony of praising the Summoner as a heroic, god-favoured figure while downplaying Mindfang's contribution to deserving Tarturus, a place of eternal torment. The second rebellion only happened because she made it possible. Without her actions, there is no rebellion for the Summoner to lead.
You don't have to think Mindfang is a good person but equating her with the literal leaders and enforcers of Alternia's Nazi regime feels like a complete misunderstanding of her character and her place in the story.
Not to mention it's also weird that Handmaid is also seen to deserve eternal torment in Tarturus, when she was stolen as a child to be a slave by a canon groomer. Like, she has already suffered enough at this point.
