He may have been a human hero once and Odin often uses him to greet heroic guests. (Haknarmal stanza 14)
He completes his mission at all costs.
A lot of people associate him with being a messenger like Hermes.
A Heremod was mentioned in Beowulf where he’s described as a disgraced exiled king.
