I've been thinking a lot about Young Xehanort since the new KHIV trailer dropped. Specifically, I've been thinking a lot about Xehanort's timeline. Because it's a little messy right now.
So I replayed Dark Road in Japanese, since I never actually finished doing that on my Japanese account, and kept some notes on the timeline as explained in that game.
And then it ballooned into this, an examination of what we know and how things might work, sprinkled liberally with personal interpretations and preferences. Because I've loved Young Xehanort since KH3D, dammit, and I need to figure this out. And I wanna do it before the promotion for the game really starts to pick up.
Dark Road Timeline
This is a brief timeline of the events of Xehanortâs life, focused on what is revealed in Dark Road. Years are relative to the present events as told in the game, the missing upperclassmen incident. Anything in italics is personal speculation.
-9y: Baby Xehanort first hears about the Child of Destiny from his caretaker. Xehanort falls asleep during this explanation, but based on later events, his caretaker reinforces this point multiple times.
-2y: Ansem appears to Young Xehanort on Destiny Islands. This event is 100% implied to be the impetus for time travel (KH3D). Unfortunately, it can also be read as the method via which he arrived in Scala ad Caelum (DR). Ansem kinda implies Xehanort might need more experience before heâs useful as a pawn in their time travel scheme, but⌠a big point of Young Xehanort in KH3D is his inability to use the Keyblade until possessed by his older self. Itâs all a little muddled, honestly. Doubly so if weâre to believe Young Xehanortâs appearance in 3D and III; his model in BBS was a reused Saix model, and they kept the general proportions for 3D and III.
-1y: "Do you know about the Keyblade War" conversation over chess.
0y: Events of Dark Road. Took place over at least a few weeks. Xehanort and his fellow classmates are proooobably just a little older than the average KH protag age. 15-16yo at max. Probably.
+1m: Xehanort and Eraqus visit everyone's graves. Odin is considering their Mark of Mastery - though not strictly immediately - and closing off Scala ad Caelum to live in a smaller world (likely Land of Departure).
+1y: Pre-MoM travel, part 1. Xehanort acknowledges the events of one year ago may have had an effect on him. Master of Masters finds Xehanort collapsed in the Corridor of Darkness after the latter removes his armor. First and second conversations with MoM. The second conversation is the first concrete implication we get that Xehanort has gone through time travel, as he finds the coat familiar. At the absolute bare minimum, his first trip (KH3D) is before this point.
+2y: Xehanort returns to Scala ad Caelum from his trip and plays chess with Eraqus. He professes to wanting a 14th life - 13 to remake the world, and one more to experience the new world.
+4y: Xehanort prepares to travel before his Mark of Mastery, which is apparently still some ways off yet, as noted by Eraqus. On trial in Wonderland.
+6y: Xehanort and Eraqus both become Keyblade Masters. Eraqus is the âtrue heirâ, having inherited Masterâs Defender. Xehanort inherits The Gazing Eye. The building looks to be Scala ad Caelum still. Had Odin not yet moved worlds?
+7y: Xehanort and Eraqus have a falling out about Xehanort wanting to open Kingdom Hearts.
+54y: Xehanort and Eraqus fight, which scars Eraqus's face. He claims he wants to recreate the Keyblade War to see if humanity is worthy of the light that follows the war.
+64y: Master Xehanort visits the Magic Mirror in Dwarf Woodlands to ask about his dreams, and receives a clue about Ven's whereabouts. Given we know Xehanort at least spends some time with Ven attempting to train him before removing Vanitas from him, he likely finds Ventus very soon after this moment.
+65y: Xehanort travels with Ventus through the dark corridor, and brings him to the Land of Departure. He claims Eraqus should teach him because he might be the Child of Destiny. Xehanort also confronts Vanitas about potentially being a pure Darkness.
+76y: Reassembling the True Organization XIII. This scene is in Re:Mind, and is sometime after KH3D and probably before roughly the midpoint of KH3, since Xigbar mentions the other members returning to their own time. Saix also says they âreassembled once more,â though, so these past hearts have likely traveled forward again and have been anchored to the present via Vexenâs replica bodies. Re:Mind marks it as 75 years after his meeting with the Master of Masters, which takes place 1 year after Dark Road.
Time Travel Breakdown
There are some aspects of the timeline that pit the information from KH3D against the newer info from KHDR, often to the point of potential retcon. Some of this will also depend on how much stock you take in some lines, based on their timing.
Some of these retcons are pretty obvious. The idea of Scala ad Caelum wasnât introduced until Kingdom Hearts III, so the place they trained was retconned from being Land of Departure. The impetus for his desire to see the outside worlds also appears to have shifted from the experiences etched in his heart during his travel through time to the dreams he saw of his caretakerâs previous life.
There are other issues with the model Young Xehanort uses for consistencyâs sake. The only argument for an older looking Xehanort in 3D and KHIII is that there was an amount of Real Time that passed while he was collecting hearts for the True OrgXIII - a not unreasonable argument, given the sheer amount of time Ansem waited on the Destiny Island - but thereâs nothing to strictly support it either.
The biggest question of his youth - the one that Dark Road didnât feel the need to clarify - is when he actually traveled through time. There are fundamentally two main ways to view Xehanortâs timeline, and they come down to whether or not we ignore his physical appearance in games released before Dark Road intended to clarify his youth.
(1) The Model Is A Lie
Conceit: Take Dark Roadâs general timeline as gospel, including Xehanortâs appearance, and supplement with previous information when necessary. Young Xehanortâs appearance in KH3D and KHIII are based on a budget-restricted BBS model, and thus can be disregarded.
Basic Timeline:
Xehanort grows up on Destiny Island.
In his early teens, Ansem appears before Xehanort and sends him on three consecutive journeys: Initial Gathering, Keyblade War, and Scala ad Caelum.
The remainder of Dark Road continues as normal.
Reasoning: The simplest version of Xehanortâs timeline, where Xehanortâs Dark Road appearance trumps the non-narrative reasons Young Xehanort looks the way he does. It also combines what Ansem seemingly did on the island as described in both KH3D and KHDR, and keeps the detail of Xehanortâs lack of a Keyblade in his No Name BBS fight and most of KH3D. In smaller details, it also maintains the BBS canon that he never once returned to the Destiny Island after leaving it.
The time travel being so early in his life would mean his entire schooling experience would be subconsciously informed by his experiences with his elder self, including his exposure to and use of Darkness. Thereâs an argument to be had that it undermines the idea of his experiences in Scala ad Caelum spurring on his examination of darkness, robbing him even more of a true origin point than the bootstrap paradox heâs trapped in already did.
Thereâs also the issue of Xehanortâs combat prowess. He remains a noncombatant until Master Xehanort takes him over in KH3D, which remains consistent. But heâs fighting on his own as a Keyblade Wielder in KHIII, which seems unreasonable to expect from him if his trips through time are consecutive.
The strangest detail of this particular scenario, though, is that Xehanort would at the absolute oldest be Rikuâs age, but heâd probably be closer to 14, which⌠definitely changes the Xehanort/Sora dynamic, especially in KHIII.
(2) The Model Still Means Something
Conceit: Take Dark Roadâs general timeline as gospel, including Xehanortâs appearance, but maintain the consistency of Young Xehanortâs apparent age in his previous game appearances, making retcons where necessary to address narrative inconsistencies.
Basic Timeline:
Xehanort grows up on Destiny Island.
In his early teens, Ansem appears before Xehanort and sends him to Scala ad Caelum.
Xehanort trains at Scala ad Caelum, experiences the loss of his classmates, and begins to travel the world.
During his first trip one year after the main events of Dark Road, Xehanort returns to Destiny Island and is sent through time after a second meeting with Ansem. At least his first trip must happen before his second meeting with the Master of Masters.
Xehanortâs later teens would be more influenced by his time travel.
Reasoning: This at least attempts to keep the visuals consistent to prevent any visual-based suspension of disbelief. It would also keep some things more consistent with the proportions we see from the KHIV trailer and Nomuraâs promo art, which seems to have a mid- to late-teen Xehanort (which would match his design and vibes post-missing students incident). A Xehanort who had already been through the death of his classmates may be more receptive to Master Xehanortâs machinations - something his older self would know - while the experiences etched in his heart would go even further to explain the somber and extremist change in demeanor that led to him clashing with Eraqus.
Xehanortâs desire to leave the islands would also remain unaffected in this particular version, as Dark Road retconned the reason why he wished to see more worlds. He no longer needs to time travel before arriving in Scala ad Caelum.
There are two big hiccups with this. One is Xehanortâs return to Destiny Island; itâs the easiest way to meet with Ansem again, who apparently waited on the islands until Sora and Riku appeared, but Xehanort says explicitly in the Japanese versions of the BBS Xehanort Reports he had ânot returned home onceâ since he initially left. This can technically be fixed by Xehanort meeting Ansem elsewhere (in a corridor of darkness, perhaps?), but that would be pure speculation at best and outright contradictory at worst.
The second hiccup is Xehanortâs ability to use a Keyblade; if he did not travel in time until later in his life, he 100% would have had the ability to use one, yet wielded light blades instead during his BBS No Name fight. The only ways to even remotely explain this would be:
Xehanort actively chose to forgo wielding a Keyblade during his initial trip through time.
Something about Master Xehanortâs status made it either difficult or impossible to wield a Keyblade.
Xehanort was susceptible to darkness enough that it robbed him of the ability to wield one temporarily (a la Riku in KHI) until Master Xehanortâs will could override him and give him the strength of heart to do so in KH3D.
Young Xehanort was given a non-Keyblade weapon for secrecy reasons in his BBS No Name fight, and the lore surrounding his lack of a Keyblade vs the timing of his time travel is inherently contradictory as a result of development necessity.
(1) is the easy way out, but might make for some interesting character exploration. (2) is based almost solely on the idea that multiple versions of a person canât exist in the same place at once. But even under the assumption that Young Xehanort time traveled later, it was before he inherited the Gazing Eye, so a Multiple Keyblade Paradox (until he received a unique keychain in KH3D) is not a viable explanation. (3) might be interesting if we consider Master Xehanort placing a part of himself within even those members of the True Organization XIII that are already himself in some capacity. He had the capacity to place a part of his heart in Sora as a vessel, so itâs not out of the question he would do it to himself. (4) is just no fun, and usually these things get later clarification regardless of how necessary it might be (see: Mickeyâs lack of shirt).
(3) Schroedinger's Model
Conceit: A secret third option. Use the conceit of time travel to the fullest to space out Xehanortâs experiences while taking aspects of his character into account. Xehanortâs appearance plays no significant part; rather, his behavior and actions dictate aspects of this timeline.
Basic Timeline:
Xehanort grows up on Destiny Island.
In his early teens, Ansem appears before Xehanort and sends him on his first trip through time (KH3D). Upon returning, Xehanort is sent to Scala ad Caelum.
Xehanort trains at Scala ad Caelum, experiences the loss of his classmates, and begins to travel the world.
At some point during his visits to the worlds, he is sent through time again for the Keyblade War (KHIII). As he is now a trained Keyblade wielder, he is a more significant combative force.
Xehanort returns to his own time and lives out the remainder of his life.
Reasoning: The main idea behind this timeline is keeping Xehanortâs lack of a Keyblade as consistent as possible without needing to delve into alternate theories. Master Xehanortâs possession of his body would have, therefore, been the first time Young Xehanort ever summoned a Keyblade, let alone wielded one in combat; this ability would carry through in his heartâs return to his own time, which is why he was able to join the other trainees in Scala ad Caelum. He would not have struggled to summon one, in all likelihood.
One of the more interesting quirks of time travel is that you have all the time in the world to do it. Xehanort does not strictly need to do both the KH3D and KHIII journeys at the same time from his perspective, as he would be traveling to the same points in the future regardless. We also only have 100% confirmation that Ansem gave him his power and sent him to the future for his initial journey; as Ansem is seemingly free to travel the worlds, he could meet Xehanort elsewhere to jumpstart his second trip through time in KHIII. This would maintain the canon information we have from BBS that Xehanort never returned to the islands once he left.
With that in mind, my personal preference for this timeline is to place Xehanortâs second trip either just before his first meeting with the Master of Masters, or in the middle of his trip and sometime before his second meeting with the Master of Masters. It Feels Right for Xehanort to have the experiences of both KH3D and KHIII etched into his heart by the time he speaks to Eraqus about his âfourteenth life.â But it works just as well if his KHIII trip is later than that, since heâll still have the memories of his first trip for the familiarity he feels for the Black Coat. Xehanort starts to be particularly cynical at the +4 year mark, so this point in his life could work just as well.
One other main reason for splitting his time travel in this way is Young Xehanortâs demeanor. His affect is much flatter in Kh3D - and though he isnât as bombastic as Master Xehanort, he seems far less âphoned inâ to his elder selfâs plot in KHIII. The idea of a younger Xehanort just going through the motions in KH3D, only to return to his own time, experience tragedy, and be pulled through time again with that new personal context motivating his involvement in Master Xehanortâs plan, is at the very least interesting to consider.
The biggest weaknesses of this version of the timeline is the (in)consistency of Xehanortâs appearance, and the many assumptions that are made therein to make it a viable option. It also carries some of the downsides from (1), wherein Xehanortâs experiences in Scala ad Caelum would be somewhat predetermined due to having gone through time once already and having those experienced etched onto his heart.
Xehanort In Quadratum
As of July 2026, We have very little info about why or how Xehanort is in Quadratum, but we do have practically 100% confirmation that Xehanort has committed a taboo that led to him paying the âultimate priceâ, as per Terra-Xehanortâs warning in Re:Mind. Young Xehanort specifically also seems to know quite a lot about this, and constantly goads Sora about it; in base KHIII, Young Xehanort is the primary source of these hints, and his presence in Toy Box specifically is likely meaningful in this regard as well.
Xehanort is clearly taller than Sora in the KHIV teaser trailer screenshot (by about a head or so). The length of his hair is shorter than seen in most of his post-Dark Road designs, including within Dark Road itself. If heâs about 15-16 throughout the base of Dark, then this hair style would match with that point in his life, and heâd be about Soraâs age here. If heâs older, itâs entirely possible he just cut his hair (something we know Xehanort has done previously for reasons of resolve). The secret third option is that Nomura simply wanted to clean up his design - which, fair, you do you.
What taboo Xehanort committed is largely unknown, at least in granular detail. Soraâs was the abuse of the Power of Waking, which saw him chasing hearts via world travel to find and revive his friends, culminating in Kairiâs revival. Terra-Xehanort spoke of the âultimate sacrificeâ upon finding out Sora was traveling through time, probably intuiting that Sora was attempting to change fate. Young Xehanort specifically discusses the Power of Waking abuse.
Xehanortâs taboo might be related to overuse of time travel, but it could also be related to the treatment of his own heart. Nobodies werenât even a true concept in the World before Xehanort turned himself into a Heartless, never mind the creation artificial Emblem Heartless. Going as far as to supplant the hearts of others with his own - ergo abusing the power a Keyblade Master has to extract a heart - might be at least partially related to the taboo he has committed. Manipulating his heart in that manner would also naturally create the fail-safe he needed to witnesses the reborn World; he could use that power to give him the edge he needed, all while ensuring at least a part of him could avoid the destruction by being forced out of the world.
But Xehanort seemingly dies for real at the end of KHIII, as opposed to fading away like Sora does. Why, then, is he in Quadratum - and in his younger form, no less?
I personally do not subscribe to the idea that this is a reborn Master Xehanort. It would undermine the largely peaceful ending he received alongside Eraqus after his fight with Sora. If this Xehanort is anyone, itâs likely to be related to Young Xehanort specifically - the version of Xehanort who received the least peaceful goodbye and who seemed the most personally focused on Soraâs fate. How and why Xehanort was able to split a version of himself off to live in Quadratum remains to be seen. But as Strelitzia, a Keyblade wielder from generations ago, is also in Quadratum, we may not need to be all that worried about the timing of this deed.
That said, replica technology would be the easiest explanation. If Xehanort either put a portion of Young Xehanortâs heart OR a tangible recreation of his memories into a second replica, as if planting a seed for a new heart to grow, and found a way to ensure this version would be sent off to Quadratum, it might work. It would make him the âfourteenth memberâ of the True Organization, echoing Xionâs status; the Organization was only ever thirteen, with the fourteenth member fated to be âforgotten.â This implies a willful sending to Quadratum, though, as opposed to a punishment⌠but perhaps there was something else involved that dictated this version be ejected from the World as an anomaly.
I also think Young Xehanort specifically being split in two and being in two places at once would better fit the Master of Masters referring to him as a âSingularity.â There are many ways and reasons he could have called him this, but the impossibility of living in multiple times and worlds would certainly be one of them. The idea of this Xehanort being in Quadratum as part of his world travels via some fluke or taboo, only to return to his own world and continue the time loop, seems a little too fatalistic for Kingdom Hearts. Depending on how itâs framed, Xehanort could be an existence that flies in the face of the Book of Prophecies, demonstrating via redemption and second chances that fate doesnât have to be set in stone.
Until proven otherwise, my... theory? headcanon? personal preference? is that this is a version of Xehanort who:
Split off from his main self, but in a more unnatural way than the Heartless/Nobody split, which seems to follow the rules of the World.
Has personally experienced the time travel loop, and is in that capacity personally responsible for Sora failing his Mark of Mastery.
Has likely made some use of replica technology.
Is more akin to his Dark Road personality, due to both distance from Master Xehanortâs influence (the exit from the time loop) and his heart reforming in an environment inherently less hostile to his existence, regardless of the presence of Heartless.
Has also experienced the trauma of Scala ad Caelum, which is partially why Iâm more inclined to subscribe to Timeline Theory (2) or (3), wherein at least part of his experience with time travel happens after Baldrâs death. But this can be disregarded if the "creation" of this Xehanort is after those points in time regardless.
I'm excited to see what role Xehanort will play in KHIV, regardless of whether or not these ideas turn out to be right. Just that screenshot from the trailer already has my head spinning, so I can't wait to get more info! Until then I'm just going to run myself in circles thinking about all of this.
