I caught Haulm at perhaps the perfect time at SXSW 2018, exhausted at one in the morning trying to fit in just one more set before my body gave out. Haulm’s ultra-soft, electronic R&B perfectly enraptured that moment, performing a set of futurist lullabies born of downtempo rhythms and ambient soundscapes. Since that time, Haulm released their sophomore EP Posture, a natural continuation of the band’s hypnotic sound, embracing the post-midnight hours in sound and scope.
Haulm is a Brooklyn based collaboration between vocalist/composer JT Norton and electronic producer, Reed Kackley (BAILE). They take us on a metaphysical journey with their debut single, They Came Along, a minimalist electronic piece influenced by downtempo and techno with earnest and pensive vocals. They Came Along is a dreamy, fleecy swaddle that evokes a surreal oasis with its chirping birds and verdant lushness. We float into oblivion on its fluid synths and floaty beats, whose Balearic consistency and glimmering beauty are reminiscent of Caribou and Bonobo, melded with the dance groove of RÜFÜS DU SOL’s more ambient offerings. Potatoes that have been harvested too early. The skin of a tuber is very soft and not well attached during late tuber bulking to allow for rapid expansion. As a crop naturally senescences, dies back, the tuber skins would start to set. Normally skin set starts when the haulm is either chemically burnt or mechanically chopped. It takes between 3 weeks and 8 weeks to fully set skins depending on factors like variety, soil temperature, moisture levels, etc. The skin needs to be set before harvest to protect the tuber from being damaged and scuffed at harvest and to keep the tubers in good condition for storing. The set skin also stops bacterial infection from entering and causing rots and other diseases. If potatoes are harvested early then the tubers will be scuffed, turn dark brown and eventually become dehydrated. Haulm are back with a brand new single, “Loss.” Premiered yesterday over on Indiecurrent, the track builds on the sonics of last year’s Stay For Me EP, injecting a slick propulsion to the otherwise hazy and smoke-filled proceedings. The single is the first from an EP the band will release next year. More details there soon.
