new experiments with inks made from earth pigments and Becherovka Czech herb liquor. When water is added to the still wet paint on the paper, interesting structures appear. I think this might be due to a supposed precipitation of herb oils that are solved in the alcohol. When the solution is thinned by adding water, the alcohol is no longer able to keep the oils in solution. Probably same effect like that of Ouzo becoming white when water is added. I got the idea from Heidi Gustafson when she posted she is making inks from ouzo. After testing a very cheap brand of ouzo, it turned out that the Becherovka I already had here as a gout medicine worked better as a binder for the pigments. bought an Ultramarine shellac ink, but I was very disappointed, because it looks almost violet, compared to Ultramarine watercolors from White Nights and Schmincke. I think I will have to continue making my own Ultramarine inks, so now I tried to make my first shellac ink. I have some self made shellac solution left from painting flutes in late summer. Problem is the amount of alcohol needed to avoid lumping when the ink is diluted with water. At the moment I do it by triy and error. I hope it will be possible to store the shellsc inks for a long time. Otherwise, the milk inks work at least as well, and it is much easier, faster and cheaper to make them.
