One of the most charming differences between the merfolk of The Tinted Barriers and many other land-based cultures is their notion of treasures. Like most creatures I have met, they adore a shiny diamond. But diamonds are quite different here - they are living fish. The concept that a dead stone could hold real significance is foreign to them. No matter how shiny and sparkly they are, they are only dead matter. They appreciate gold, but mostly because it is a soft metal and easy to shape. But what wealth lies in a stone? Anyone can keep a stone. On the other hand, breeding and tending their diamond fish is exceptionally hard. They spend months or even years training them to trail behind them in the right position, holding their hair in intricate shapes or carrying strands of woven gold connected to their body. Whole lives are spent breeding the most sparkling fish. As most merfolk cannot afford to spend so much time, they are also a sign of great prosperity, as you can afford to pay other merfolk to do this training.
