The Bastille Begins to Disappear
On July 16, 1789, just two days after the Fall of the Bastille, the revolutionary transformation of France entered a new phase. The newly established Paris municipal assembly ordered the complete demolition of the medieval fortress, a powerful symbol of royal authority, oppression, and the absolute power of the monarchy. The destruction of the Bastille became a physical and symbolic act of the Revolution, showing that the old order was being dismantled.
At the same time, King Louis XVI faced growing pressure from the people of Paris and the National Assembly. In an attempt to calm the unrest, the king recalled popular finance minister Jacques Necker, whose dismissal days earlier had helped spark the crisis that led to the storming of the Bastille. Louis XVI also ordered royal troops to withdraw from the center of Paris, signaling a temporary retreat of royal power.
The events of July 16 marked a major turning point in the French Revolution. The monarchy’s authority had been shaken, the people of Paris had gained political influence, and the destruction of the Bastille became one of the Revolution’s most enduring symbols of the fall of absolute monarchy and the rise of popular sovereignty.
