Something They Don’t Know
Prompt: In which Daveed Diggs is asked how he comes up with his lyrics during an interview. Told in his POV.
Warning: Smut.
A/N: Day 5 of the write-a-thon. Of course I would post this early when all I’ve been complaining about is not having enough time to write. Oh well. Also, I’m sure Nadeska Alexis is a cool girl, I just needed her to behave this certain way to get the story going. Enjoy!
Daveed slips his phone into his pocket and stood to give Nadeska Alexis a handshake once she enters the dressing room, Lin’s advice on how to handle the tricky reporter reverberating in his mind. Having done the Complex interview with Chance previously, he warned him about her ruthlessness and her inclination to pry for scandalous information she could share with her readers. Lin told Daveed to be polite, courteous, and above all, smile through the “little white lies” he would have to tell.
“Mr. Diggs, it’s unfortunate that the rest of the crew couldn’t make it,” she says, turning on her recorder and sliding it on the table that separated them, “but I’m glad you were able to come in despite the late notice.”
Daveed lets out a nervous chuckle when she ignores his gesture, his hand still awkwardly hovering between the two of them, and opts to bring out her notebook and pen from her purse instead. He was never the best with interviews, especially when he was by himself, dressed in clothes he couldn’t afford and sitting in a room that was too sophisticated for his tastes. He wished William and Jonathan were here – they understood his ineptness when it came to talking to new people and would definitely take over the interview. But since they couldn’t, he had to man up and promote the new album releasing in a week.
Nadeska sits, and Daveed follows suit, watching as she flips to a page full of questions that she’s prepared. Luckily, the first few questions were predictable –  how he adjusted to life after Hamilton, his role in Blackish, the release of the album, and the upcoming tour -  all he could answer easily and truthfully. But when she suddenly leans forward, a gleam in her eyes that screamed trouble, Daveed knew it was time to make use of Lin’s advice: smile through the little white lies.Â
“So, clipping doesn’t exactly have the most innocent songs,” Nadeska hums, choosing her words carefully, “and some of them require a repeat listen. Your lyrics are curt but very complex, Mr. Diggs.  Mind if I throw a few lines at you to elaborate on? And if you could perhaps share what, or who, inspired you to write them?”

A/N: So you’re going to give me a backhanded compliment and then insult me by telling me my fics are shitty? Well here’s ANOTHER one for you. Two in one day, will ya look at that? *clears throat* Anyways, hope you guys enjoy this chapter and let me know what you think. Thank you for proofreading @how-could-i-do-this ! Also, I’m leaving for a trip soon, so I’m not sure if I have time to write. @nesthemonster - this is for you.
Thanks for reading!
The Miranda kingdom was breathtaking.
Though you’d already seen the scenery – the sprawling green plains, mountains and hills that decorated the horizon, and the fields littered with farmers that tended to their crops and livestock – experiencing it once was not enough for you to appreciate its beauty. As you neared the first village, you noticed that children, boys and girls alike, were running alongside the carriage, waving their tiny arms in greeting. You automatically waved back, giggling when their eyes went wide.
Without much thought about your prior spat, you tugged on Prince Lin’s sleeve to catch his attention. “Say hello!”
He gave you an amused stare but acquiesced, lifting his hand in acknowledgment to the sprinting children. You laughed when they shrieked in delight, their bright smiles shining under the sun despite the growing distance between them and the carriage. “I imagine that you are very popular with the children in the villages,” you teased, tucking the loose tendrils of hair that the wind toyed with behind your ear, “they are quick to idolize people that they admire… and your similar temperaments must be appealing to them as well.”
Prince Lin scoffed and propped his chin on his hand, elbow resting against the window of the carriage. “Are you calling me a child, Princess?” he questioned, regarding you carefully.
You leaned back against the seat, purposely not meeting his gaze as you grinned. “Maybe.”
“I am anything but a child,” he murmured, shifting close, “would you like a proof of my manhood, Princess?”

A/N: I will always get nervous whenever I post anything about this fic, because, let’s face it, it’s AU as hell. But I hope you guys like it! I already have about ~500 words for the next chapter. I know a few of you guys wanted to be tagged for this update but since I’m shit at organizing my page and I didn’t even think about writing it down as I got asked to do so, I couldn’t do it. But if y’all wanted to be tagged the next time I update, just shoot me an ask or message. I’ll make sure to write it down this time. As always, let me know what you think! :)
EDIT: @nesthemonster - this is for you.

“Your Highness.”
A firm shake on your shoulder abruptly pulled you from the realm of slumber. You pushed yourself up from the bed, eyes still bleary from sleep and muscles sore from the position you slept in. You glimpsed at your retainer who looked at you with worried eyes. “What is it?” you whispered, voice hoarse.
She hesitated before speaking. “It’s morning, your Highness.”
You rubbed your weary eyes, noticing for the first time that the sun had risen. You must have fallen asleep through your tears. You frowned, the events from the night before still heavy on your heart. “Is it already time for breakfast?” you questioned, grimacing as you pulled on the bothersome pins that were still tightly bound to your hair. A section of your long mane fell down in waves, curtaining your face, and your retainer immediately rushed forward to help you.
“Yes, your Highness,” she answered.
She beckoned you to sit in the vanity and you inwardly recoiled at your image. The kohl on your eyes was smudged and the rouge on your lips and cheeks was faded, the sight reminding you of a cheap jester. You inspected your retainer as she hummed to herself, her skillful fingers gently removing the pins she applied the night before. For the first time since you’d met her, you noticed that she was similar in age as you, her round cheeks and small stature a sign of her youth.
“What is your name?” you found yourself asking.
She paused, blinking at you in wonder. “My apologies, your highness. I must’ve forgotten to introduce myself in light of all the madness for the arrival of your family. My name is Elaina. I am your temporary aid until the wedding.”
You remained silent, the memories of your retainer from back home, Magdalene, fresh in your mind. The two seemed alike, yet Elaina seemed more soft-spoken, a trait that Magdalene lacked. The thought caused you to inwardly smirk, remembering the playful quarreling behind the closed doors of your quarters once you coaxed her into being comfortable with you. Magdalene was a very dear friend. The recollections of your retainer, coupled with the events from the night before caused the overwhelming sense of longing for home to rear its ugly head once more.
“We mustn’t dally, your highness,” Elaina urged, helping you rise to your feet, “I drew a bath for you. If we wait any longer, you will have an uncomfortable start to your morning.”
You peered at your reflection one more time and thought of the upcoming confrontation with your family, Prince Lin, and his family.
“Why yes, a cold bath would definitely be an unfavorable start to this exciting day.”

Opening Night
Prompt: The first show of In The Heights was complete and being the good girlfriend that you are, you decide to be sober for the after party.
Pairing: Lin x reader
A/N: A quick drabble to get the gears moving again. Of course I didn’t proofread. Of course I’m going to do it once I post it. I was inspired to write this because of the ITH that flooded my dash today. P.S.: DID YOU KNOW SONNY IS THE NEW USNAVI?!
Lin’s suit jacket was tossed aside hours ago, lost in one of the tables in the venue.
His tie was next, loosened enough to for him to breathe while he danced with wild abandon.
Then the top two buttons of his shirt came undone and his sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, the heat from the bodies that surrounded the dance floor causing the thin material to cling to his body.
It was hours after the first show of In The Heights was completed, and Lin and the cast and crew were having the time of their lives. Your boyfriend, the genius behind the musical, was living it up, soaking in the success of the show. He laughed that crazy, maniac laugh of his, and shook his hips like his life depended on it. Lin was a social butterfly, and he fluttered around all night dancing with guests and taking celebratory shots.
You knew that he had enough when he was onstage, screaming a freestyle that professed his love and thanks to the cast. When he spotted you recording him, he pointed at you and leaped from the stage to grab you by the waist. “Yo this girl you see, the apple of my eye, center of my life, is going to be my wife!”
“Please stop,” you snorted as you pushed him away.
He cackled and pressed a sloppy, wet kiss on your cheek. Flashes from cameras and hoots from the crowd followed, and he jumped back on stage, yelling at the bartender for another round of shots. He and Robin, the biggest instigator of the night, stumbled to the bar, their greedy hands reaching for the shots Lin requested.
“Lin,” you said, having lost count of how many times you’ve said his name in that tone, “easy.” You take the second glass from his hand before he had the chance to drink it, and you couldn’t help but grin when he pouted and leaned forward to reach for the drink.
“Here, take this one,” Robin chimed in, drunkenly pushing a glass into Lin’s hand.
“You. Stop.” You spun to glare at Robin, “and oh my god, Lin,” you laughed when he clinked his glass against the one in your hand before downing the shot in one go.
“God, I couldn’t ask for anything more,” Lin yelled, slamming the glass down into the counter of the bar, “I just performed on Broadway and I’m going home with the most beautiful woman in the place!”
You smiled, reached for his tie, and pulled him down for a long kiss. The tangy taste of the alcohol was exhilarating and his hands that trailed down your back left a path of heat in their wake. But when his hands roamed down to your butt, you drew back. “Lin,” you warned when you heard Robin snickering beside you.
Luckily Chris and Lac whisked him away, and you were left to stare at your silly boyfriend who continued to dance the night away. You were fine with watching him from a distance; parties were never really your thing. Besides, tonight was Lin’s night. He deserved everything and more for what he’d accomplished.
When you saw him start to undo the remaining buttons of his shirt, you rushed forward, knowing that it was time to intervene. “Lin please,” you giggled as he reached for you. He took your hand and spun you so that your back faced his front.
“My lips feel numb,” Lin whispered against your ear, arms coming down so he hugged you from behind, “and the room is spinning, but I fucking feel great.”
You peeled yourself away from his body and squealed when he dragged you back into his arms. You give Lac an exasperated look when he pressed his nose against the curve of your neck, peppering kisses against your skin. “Lin.”
“Nothing compares to how happy I feel right now, not even when I was up there playing Usnavi or when I finally figured out how to right click on my Mac – do you remember that? I want to live in this moment forever.”
“You’re a sweet talker even while your drunk, Lin,” you hummed, smiling softly at his rambling.
He sloppily spun you around to face him. “You love it. You love me.”
You wiped the sweat off his forehead and gave him a kiss, rolling your eyes when an inebriated Robin interrupted to hand Lin another drink. “We’ll see how much I love you tomorrow,” you muttered, chasing after the two when they began to start a conga line with the cast and crew, “when you can barely get up from bed because of your hangover.”
A white shirt flung past your head and you let out an incredulous laugh when you recognized that it belonged to your boyfriend.
Happy opening night, Lin.
So Close
Summary: Sometimes the best friend doesn’t get the happily ever after. Told in Karen’s POV.
Pairing: Karen x Lin x reader
Warning: Angst.
A/N: This wouldn’t be possible without @strongenoughfoundation . Thank you for listening, agreeing, and fueling my conspiracy theories about Lin and Karen. Thank you for proofreading and filling in the plot holes. Most importantly, thank you for being the awesome best friend that you are. (…yo that sounded like an acceptance speech for an award bahahaha!)
Karen was all too familiar with the look on Lin’s face. The closed lipped smile of his that softened his features, the way his eyes would shine bright, swirling with affection and wonder, and how he’d fiddle his hands together in anticipation for an exchange of words – it had all been reserved for her for as long as she knew him.
But today…
Today, Karen knew that those days were long gone.
She felt hollow, the bitter taste of defeat in her mouth as she watched Lin fidget in front of the church, anticipating the arrival of his bride. It seemed like it was only days ago that she was with him backstage before the show, cuddled against his side while he filled her in on every detail of his morning, no matter how small, and only stopping to share funny videos he saw on the internet that he knew she’d like or jokes he was sure she’d love. She was his best friend and he was hers, their relationship untouchable and incomparable to anyone else’s.
Karen didn’t know when it happened, but she had started to find herself leaning into him every time he’d gently caress her face as he teased her, or enjoying the warmth she experienced whenever he would drape his arm across her shoulders, and even day-dreaming about what it would be like to spend a day in his bed blissfully wrapped in his arms. She could still feel the touch of his lips against hers, how his hands would press firmly against the small of her back to press her closer, deepening the passionate kiss their characters shared – she often found herself wondering what a kiss would be like between Lin and Karen.
She was never the type to shy away from her feelings. Her relationship with Lin was always an honest one, so it was easy for her to decide that she wanted to tell him of her affections. Unfortunately, time and luck weren’t on her side. After In The Heights, she was immediately swept into the whirlwind of rehearsals for West Side Story. The everyday phone calls with Lin eventually weaned to once every two weeks, but her adoration for Lin remained strong. She knew that their chemistry was catalytic – a single conversation after a brief time apart was enough to spark the effortless conversation and teasing that they’ve mastered over the years. She trusted Lin’s ability to find his way back to her, and she would always welcome him with open arms, which is why she wasn’t concerned when Lin stopped calling altogether. She knew he’d return in due time as energetic as always, and the gravitation towards each other would resume its pull.
It was a month of silence before she heard from Lin again. She was on her way home from rehearsals, his picture flashing across her screen causing the discomfort of her tight vocal chords and tense muscles to disappear. She happily answered, and her heart warmed at the sound of his voice.
“Karen, I met someone,” he revealed, cutting her off her playful remarks about his absence.
“You what?” she exclaimed, the hand clutching the handle of her purse that was slung over her shoulder falling limp against her side.
“It was incredible. It was like I was a character in one of those cheesy movies you like watching so much. She’s new in town and she stopped me at the subway station for directions. One thing led to another and I ended up spending the whole day with her.”
Karen recognized the adoration in his voice, but there was something different about the way he spoke about her. Her knees felt weak and she stopped walking to sit on a nearby bench, stunned at the realization that for the first time, she couldn’t seem to understand the inner-workings of his mind. “Lin, you spent the whole day with a stranger? Do you know how dangerous that was?”
“Yes, but Karen… There’s just something about her. I think she’s the one,” was his quick reply, voice giddy.
Karen felt her throat constrict, her palms getting sweaty from his alarming declaration. “Lin, you just met her! How do you – “
“I just know, alright? She’s amazing,” he sighed dreamily. “I can’t wait until you two meet. You’re gonna love her!”
His voice faded away, lost in the rapid staccato of her heart and the rush of blood that raced to her head from her anguish and disbelief.
The first time she met Y/N was when he brought her as a date to the opening night of West Side Story. She wasn’t surprised to see that she was a perfect match for Lin, every idiosyncratic feature about her complimenting Lin’s own quirky traits. Y/N was dynamic; she matched Lin’s wit and seemed to capture the room with her enthusiasm. Karen wanted to dislike her, but she saw the sincerity in her eyes the moment they were introduced.
From Lin’s lingering stares, soft embrace, and his natural draw to her even when he was across the room – Karen knew that it really was something different. But she continued to hope, knowing that sometimes, the famous happy ending with who you thought was the one wasn’t always possible. She felt a little selfish every time Lin’s smile illuminated his face at the mention of her name, but she reminded herself that she deserved a happy ending too.
Karen felt that happily ever after slip away the second time she met her. It was their engagement party. Karen was in the corner of the room, feeling like she’d swallowed a ball of cotton as she watched the glowing couple skirt around the party, greeting guests and accepting words of wisdom from married couples. She felt like a fool for letting the thought of Lin falling out of his infatuation and allure for Y/N even cross her mind. She should have known better –  when Lin loved, he loved with all his being.
She spent the rest of the night drinking wine and regretting the months of silence that she had given Lin, hoping that he’d someday return to her arms. She ignored the pinch of loathing that emerged when Y/N slipped onto the barstool next to her, her radiance ever present as she flashed Karen a smile and offered a warm conversation. When Y/N was pulled away by one of Lin’s adoring relatives, Karen was forced to drink away the guilt of feeling that way towards someone who was so pure and loving.
Suddenly the song shifted, and Karen was drawn back to the present. The low murmur of the crowd accompanied the organ as they turned to look at Y/N walk down the aisle. But Karen remained rooted to the spot, her eyes trained on Lin as his eyes marveled at the sight of his bride. His eyes, shiny from his unshed tears, were full of love and awe.
Karen tightened her hold on the pew, letting out a deep breath to calm her nerves. With her other hand, she fanned herself with the wedding program, hoping that the gust of air would help with the feeling of hopelessness that overwhelmed her as Y/N reached Lin. She placed a hand against her chest, watching through tunnel-vision as Lin extended his hand out for her to take. The feeling of dread sunk in as the reality of the situation dawned on her.
Lin was getting married.
“You didn’t think I’d forget to save a dance for the most important girl in my life, did you?”
Karen let out a weak laugh but accepted his outstretched hand, hoping that her voice didn’t betray the sorrow she felt from watching his first dance with Y/N. “Be careful with what you say, Lin. You’re a married man now.”
He threw his head back and laughed merrily as he tugged her to the dance floor. Karen couldn’t stop the soft smile from forming on her face when he placed his left hand on her hip to pull her close. Her right hand instinctively clutched his, the movement engraved in her brain from the countless times she danced with him on stage.
“I’m glad you’re here,” he murmured, twirling her.
Karen clutched his shoulder tightly and kept her gaze focused on the wall over his shoulder, refusing to meet his eyes. She didn’t trust herself to speak, the pain of her loss still fresh on her mind. Luckily, he didn’t question her silence and instead drew her closer to him. She closed her eyes, losing herself to the warmth that radiated from his body and how it seemed to mold perfectly against hers.
As they moved together as one, Karen let her mind drift. Instead of the plum dress she wore, she imagined a long white gown, the train of her veil rustling behind her as she and Lin danced. She’d wear her mother’s pearl earrings – the same ones she wore on her wedding day – and he’d playfully tease her about being too sentimental. She’d frown, ready to argue, but then he’d give her a quick kiss before she’d have a chance to. The crowd would applause at the act of endearment, but the raucous sound would not faze the calm that she felt as she stared into his eyes.
“Mind if I cut in?”
Y/N’s soft voice forcefully yanked Karen out of her fantasy.
“Hi love,” Lin whispered fondly.
Karen blinked back the tears that flooded her eyes, goosebumps raising up her arms as Lin left her side. She wanted to desperately keep her cool, to ignore the ache in her chest as she watched them kiss in front of her. But there was no denying it now: the hope of being with Lin was officially over. The days of laughing until her stomach hurt or the playful teasing that would transform into full-blown arguments that could only be resolved with ice-cream would be no more. They would all just be memories that Karen treasured while Lin made new ones with Y/N.
The crushing depression set in.
Today…
Today, Karen knew that she had to bid her goodbyes to her romantic dreams.
Is That One Yours?
Prompt: Thanks to his larger than life personality, Anthony had no problems with getting along with your large Filipino family.
Pairing: Anthony Ramos x reader
Words: 970
Translations of key words/phrases in Tagalog:
Salamat po - Thank you (formal)
Magandang gabi po - Good evening (formal)
Tito - Uncle
Tita - Aunt
Gago - Crazy
A/N: Day 4 of the hamwriter’s marathon. So far, this is the hardest to write! The prompt was to “Celebrate your culture and where you are!” Well, since I am Filipino and live in the states, I decided to write about it (lmao wow, that was beautifully written, wasn’t it?) Thanks to @nesthemonster, who helped me with the idea (love you)! Anywho, hopefully you guys get a glimpse to what I have to endure being in a large Filipino family. I fucking love it. But at the same time, hate it.
“Salamat po.”
“Magandang gabi po.”
You hide your grin behind your hand, watching as Anthony paced back and forth in your hotel room, reading the notecards in his hands.
“Your pronunciation isn’t too bad,” you say.
He looks up, beaming. “This is going to be so easy, Y/N. Your family is going to love me.”
You walk up to him and adjust his bowtie, a pretty plum color that matched your dress. Today was your Tito and Tita’s wedding anniversary and you decided to finally introduce your long-time boyfriend to the rest of your family. Family was a very loose term, considering that for Filipino people, any friend of the family was considered a part of it. While you may have thirty “Titas” attending tonight, in actuality, you only had five that were related by blood. But that didn’t stop any of them from prying into your personal life and giving you advice that you didn’t want or need.
“Ant,” you croon, wrapping your arms around his neck lovingly, “my parents already love you and that’s all that matters.”
He smiles, his arms coming down to the middle of your back to embrace you, and gives you a quick kiss. “I know, but I want to make sure everyone likes me. I want to impress them.”
“Yes, because that’s very hard to do,” you say, giggling.
“You know all about that, don’t you?” He smirks.
You flush and pry yourself away from your arms. “Alright, let’s go, gago.”
“Is that one yours?”
You groan when you see Anthony with the Titas, mimicking the simple footwork of a line dance. Your Mother, knowing that he loved dancing and being in the center of attention, dragged him over to learn line dancing, an art that your clumsy and uncoordinated self had never learned to do. He was a natural (of course he was), and his hair, which was down during the reception, was now pulled into a bun as he partied on the dance floor.
He starts to add his own touch to the dance moves, causing the Titas around him to laugh and cheer him on. To your mortification, when he began to dab, the older women began to copy him too.
“Unfortunately,” you grunt, sipping your glass of wine.
You weren’t kidding when you said that Anthony didn’t need to try hard for your family to like him. After the nosy stares and the constant introductions of Anthony to your family members (and the awkward moment where one of your male cousins tried to hit on him), the minute they saw his plate stacked high with Filipino food, he was welcomed with open arms.
You mentally giggle, remembering how the hushed whispers in Tagalog of how the “American” boy would react to the catered Filipino food were silenced when he took a heaping scoop of each dish. A Tito from the table clapped his back and proceeded to tell him what each dish contained and then shared anecdotes of his life in the Philippines. Your Father, who was seated at the table with your Mother, gave Anthony a beer in hopes of helping him stay awake through it all - Tito Boy was notorious for his long, drawn out stories.
You lost track of how long you were watching him dance, but when he stood beside one of the uncles to sing karaoke, you lose it. You leave your table and head to the front of the room, phone in hand. You record him butchering the Tagalog song and set a reminder to post it on social media later tonight. His fans would go nuts. After the song ended, he completely took over, singing and dancing to his groupies (the Titas he danced with) and encouraging other people to join him on the stage.
You shake your head, but couldn’t help but smile at the fool that you were dating. Your heart felt full, knowing that your family accepted and loved him.
Hours later, Anthony plops down to the empty seat beside you, wiping away the sweat on his forehead.
“Yo, your family knows sure how to party, Y/N.” he laughs.
You push his hands away and use a napkin to pat the sweat from his skin. “You had way too much fun tonight, Ant.”
He shakes Tito Boy’s hand and then kisses his wife on the cheek as they bid you two farewell. “Of course, it was a party! What was I going to do, sit around and watch people? Like you?” he teases.
“Remind me why I’m dating you again?” you pout, crossing your arms across your chest.
“Aww, don’t be like that, baby,” he coos, reaching over to pull you onto his lap, “you know I’m teasing.”
You continue to frown, pretending to be annoyed. When he brushes his fingers along your sides, tickling you, you crack, laughing and wiggling to get away from his exploring fingers.
When you finally catch your breath, you sigh and look down at Anthony, your chest tightening when you see the adoring look on his face.  “Love you,” you mumble, leaning down to press a soft kiss on his lips.
“Love you too, baby,” he whispers, arms tightening around your waist.
“Everyone loved you tonight,” you say after more of the family members approached you to say goodbye, smiling when they were shocked and impressed with Anthony’s “Magandang gabi po.”
“Good. Hopefully, they’ll all be there for our wedding anniversary party too.”
You pause, heart skipping a beat, and give him a long look. “How can we do that when we’re not married?”
“Not married yet,” he corrects, his hazel eyes twinkling in mischief.
You pepper quick kisses on his freckles. “You sound so sure of yourself, Anthony.”
“You said it yourself – I’m a pretty likable guy – I think I’ll find a way to convince you to marry me.”
You laugh and give him another sweet kiss, giggling when you feel him smile against your lips.
You didn’t need convincing – your heart was already his.
