You've given up ever thinking of getting away from your parents.Though King Wilson has proven himself more generous than previous, your father still clung to the old ways of believing in fending for yourself. But while others in the village were thriving, his pride kept you and yours living off of the scraps you could gather from the woods.
The only solace you had was Max, the mutt you'd rescued from a trap. Father only allowed him to stay because he could feed himself and kept watch over the house.
After Mother passed away, your siblings managed to escape, one by one. Father's cruelty grew with each loss until you were too scared to do anything without his permission. Max would try to get between the two of you to keep you safe but you know Father's anger and would often keep him tied up outside when you sensed Father getting violent. You've lost so much, you can't afford to lose Max as well.
One morning Father grabs you from your bed, startling both you and Max.
"The hells are you doin' just sleepin'!" he yells, alcohol heavy on his breath. "Ain't good for nothin', are you? Just you and that mutt draining my resources! 'Bout time you did somethin' to earn your keep."
He drags you outside, not listening to your confused pleas. Max is barking, just trying to keep you safe, but you encourage him to run away. You can't stand the idea of him getting hurt.
"Only thing you can do is get me a bride price," Father mutters. "But ain't no one natural gonna want a skeleton like you for a wife. Maybe the Secret Service creatures 'll take you instead. Leave me a treasure for ya. Finally doin' somethin' good for the family."
The air is forced out of your lungs as he slams you against a tree. You can't react fast enough stop him from tying your hands behind the tree.
"And if even the monsters don't want you, you can just be food for some other creature," Father gripes as he ties your hands painfully tight. "Whether you get me fortune or not, you ain't gonna be my problem anymore."
Father storms off back to the house, ignoring Max's barking.
Collapsing against the tree, you finally let the tears start flowing. Your shoulders are screaming from the rough angles. Your hands already feel like they're losing circulation. Sitting down isn't an option but you're already feeling too weak to stay standing.
Max whines at you, unsure of how to help.
"You should just run, Max," you sob. "There's nothing for you here anymore."
Instead of listening to you, Max settles at your feet, gently nuzzling your leg and whining.
The sun has set and you're feeling dizzy. You can barely feel your arms, let alone your hands. Max hasn't left your side.
There's a shift in the air that you're barely able to register. You must be hallucinating as a purple portal opens near you. Three men step out and look around. The finely dressed with with messy brown hair points to your house where Father is probably sleeping.
"Nothing but ash?" asks the man with blondish brown hair and no shirt. You swear there's fire coming from his eyes.
The third man comes towards you. He looks like the first man, but with neater hair and simpler clothing.
"Hey there, little one," he gently coos. "We're going to get you out of here. You'll never have to deal with that monster again."
"Max?" you're barely able to say.
The man smiles, "don't worry. He's a good boy who gets to come with you."
As he cuts the ropes that keep you tethered to the tree, you let yourself give in to the exhaustion.
The smell of food causes your stomach to wake you. Carefully opening your eyes, your heart soars to see Max at your side. He licks your hand and starts doing tippy-taps with his feet.
Taking in more of your surroundings, you see you're in a small room, laying on a cot. There's a little window that you can't see much out of at the moment, but it's enough to tell you it's daylight.
The door opens a heavyset woman comes in with a small plate.
"Here you go, pup," she coos before she notices you're awake. "Ah, I'll just leave these vittles for the good dog and go get you some food. I'm sure you've got questions, but you need some nourishment first."
Max barely waits for the plate to be set down before digging in. Your own stomach twists on you again, reminding you of its emptiness. You're not sure where you are or how you got here. Last you remember is Father leaving you tied to a tree. But at least you know you're safe. Anywhere that makes sure Max is fed can't be all bad.
When she comes back, you try to lift yourself up but your shoulders scream in protest.
"Oh don't worry, hon," the woman reassures as she sets the food down on a nearby table. "The Mage said your shoulders were seriously hurt by that monster who tied you to the tree. You're to let yourself rest and heal up properly." The woman grabs a couple more pillows and helps prop you up with them.
"Now lets get you some food and water," she says as she sits next to you. "I'm going to do some talkin' and explainin' while you eat, okay?"
When you nod, she starts alternating between feeding you water and soup while you get some answers.
"My name is Tess," she begins. "You were rescued by the King's Mages last night. While it don't happen as often as it once did, there are still people lookin' to get rich quick by leavin' their daughters out as sacrifice brides for the King's Secret Service. The Mages have been sure to keep an eye out for these things so that the poor girls don't get killed and to...leave a message as to why these things shouldn't be done."
She's too polite to say it, but you have no doubts you'll never see Father again.
"Instead of being given as a bride, you'll be employed into His Majesty's service," Tess continues. "When you're well again, we'll be giving room, food, and a wage. While you're gettin' better, we can learn where you might be best put to work. If your pup is any good, might have you both working the barns, herdin' the chickens and whatnot."
"Max," you manage to croak out, getting the pup's attention.
"Max," Tess smiles.
The village is astir with talk. A small column of smoke had people investigating. Where your house once stood, there was now nothing but ash. Those with good eyes could make out hints of a skeleton on the ground.
And in front of the ashes, serving as a warning to all, was giant bush of blue roses. Any who tried to pluck the flowers was pricked and made sick by the impossibly large thorns. Any gardening tools taken to it instantly became rusted. The bush would forever stand as a reminder to not sacrifice others for your own gain.
