I read Shadow and Bone for the first time when I was in early high school and I hated it because I thought Mal was so boring and that Alina shouldโve been with the Darkling.
But itโs been 10 years now, and Iโm rereading it after having read the Six of Crows books and Iโm finding that I actually really like Mal.
I get why the series is young adult but I think that because of the love interests Iโve only enjoyed it now that Iโm an adult and have been in some good and bad relationships. I can now understand how toxic the Darkling was and cringe at how much I loved him when I was younger. And I do see how Mal is the more boring choice but I like them. I like how close they are and how comfortable she is with him. Iโm old enough now to understand that just because something is exciting, doesnโt mean itโs good for you. And itโs making me enjoy the books a lot more now.
