for canonical backing of hornet being a sadist i can only offer that she giggles during her fight with ghost and her natural cruelty that weavers possess. plus i think the contrast of her personality and role with this trait to be super interesting. pale beings have a thirst for dominance but that's not the same as sadism so it's not something I'm considering as evidence. insert my usual thoughts on hornet repressing a lot of her emotions and desires paired with the fact that sadism is near universally disliked. so the fact she likes when others are in pain at her claws is extra buried.

then she meets nightmare who challenges her to fights very often and can truly take just about any hit she gives him. the fact that these fights often end up in fucking really starts to open the lid on her long ignored sadistic streak. it already feels good to inflict injuries on him and then she gets rewarded for it afterwards via a dozen orgasms.

she probably could've dealt with it eventually on her own with peaceful meditation or something. unfortunately, nightmare loves noticing things about hornet and reading her mind 24/7 so her secret isn't very secret for long.

nightmare is not the perfect partner in that he's a masochist simply because he's not like that for anyone but hornet. and even then it's less that he gets off on the devastating blows she hits him with and moreso that he gets off on the fact she's strong enough to actually do it and that this is something not many can do for her. grimm can take of a beating sure, hornet seldom worries for the troupe master's health during a spar. but he's not tanking the same amount of damage as nkg is nor is he getting hornet at her most feral and cruel. only nightmare gets that and can actually take it.

so he notices hornet's hidden wants and goes. let's pull that out onto the stage. he starts putting even more effort into winning so that when she's struggling with everything she has and subsequently hurting him quite a bit, she's getting her fix + the following hours of knotting. then he openly goads and encourages her, pinning her down and telling her to get back to trying to rip his jaw off or gouging out an eye or breaking his shell. he wants her getting used to and comfortable inflicting this violence so that when he finally tells her that she is in fact a sadist, there's no hiding from it. she hurts him deeply all the time and she likes it. she loves it! she wants to do it even when they're not doing their fights for dominance. she has absolutely no leg to stand on nor anywhere to retreat from her own tendencies and the fact he knows.
