there is something deeply comforting to me about seeing death and spirit imagined through an owl.

not as something cruel, not as something to fear — just a witness. a keeper of thresholds. a quiet thing with wings wide open, standing where the living and the dead still brush against each other.

Connecting to the Dead with Cemetery Water

The first use for cemetery water is to connect with the dead. Because this water is infused with death energy, its function is similar to graveyard dirt.

Put cemetery water into death witch or necromancy-related spells. I used some in my spirit work oil and necromancy ink. You can also add it to salves and oils (not on the body). Dipping a candle in it (not the wick!) and letting it dry might enhance a candle spell. Add a tiny bit to dampen your herbal smoking blend should you want to go hedgecrossing or divine.

To simplify, view cemetery water as a spirit work booster. Anything you add it to should help you connect with the dead.

Another use for cemetery water is lecanomancy, otherwise known as water scrying. Since ancient Rome, necromancers have peered into water to receive messages from the dead.

To practice water scrying, grab a clear bowl (glass is ideal) and pour cemetery water into it. Make sure that the bowl is not too dark; you want to see the water. Light a candle and keep it nearby to illuminate the space. Some people put a bit of olive oil into the water, but that is not necessary. Breathe evenly, clear your mind, and peer into the water. See what the dead wish to show you.

Protection with Cemetery Water

Another potential use for cemetery water is protection. Depending on the folklore, even imitating water can protect you from spirits.

Rub cemetery water onto your windows and doors to ward your home. While leaving a cemetery, toss some water behind you so that spirits don’t follow you home. Painting certain objects in the color of water might dissuade spirits from touching them. Include it in washes to cleanse your divination tools.

O, yeah, Graveyard Dirt ... the magical ingredient that so many authors of modern "magic" books might get wrong.

Graveyard Dirt is, plain and simply, dirt that is bought from a grave respectfully and ethically to be used in magical workings with the the assistance and the power of a spirit and spirit world.

Some authors have claimed that graveyard dirt is either ground patchouli or ground up mullein. This is false based on their own European systems.

But Whose Graveyard Dirt Do You Use? Of your doing a specific working then picking the right grave is important, you want to choose the right spirit for the right job.

DON'T BELIEVE This: 'Some say to use the graveyard dirt of a very young child because they are easily manipulated to do your bidding. That's writing on Lucky Mojo site. But I'm here to tell you NO real root worker is using anything from a kids grave. Let them rest...

But the important thing to remember learn and do the workings right to accomplish your golds correctly. You don't want a soldier working to get you your perfect mate or lover. Just as you wouldn't want to have the spirit of your mom to help curse someone.

Consider These Examples:

Using the graveyard dirt of a lawyer to win a Court Case.

Using the graveyard dirt of a detective or police officer to expose and put away a criminal.

Using a family members graveyard dirt to help with finding your partner.

Using graveyard dirt from a doctor to help you overcome illness.

This type of dirt from these human spirits will in hance your work but find the right spirit.

How to obtain Graveyard Dirt:

Graveyard Dirt must be purchased. (not just dug up ) rather it's from a specific grave or just anywhere.

Supplies Needed:

Something to put the dirt in.

A small bottle of alcohol or florida water. (not everyone like alcohol)

Any silver coins (get a few)

Flowers (if your going to a specific grave)

A candle (if your going to a specific grave)

A label or piece of paper and a pen to write with.

Process: For Obtaining The Dirt:

(Please remember to check your state law some can't go at night) As I reach the gates of the cemetery, I leave pennies in honor of the spirit who guards all cemeteries. (Some spirits don't want to move on and think there duty is to protect the graves.) Don't worry if you don't have d lot of change use what you have.

Buying the Graveyard Dirt:

Cut out a small plug in the dirt. Then reach down grab the dirt and put it in the bag. Drop the silver coins into the hole for payment. Thanking the spirit.

Give them there offering if it's liquor, pour some into the hole, and put back the plug of sod to cover the hole. (For specific grave only)

Leave the candle to burn on the headstone and place the flowers at the grave. (Check if the neighboring headstone is the individual's spouse and leave flowers there too). Leave the grave knowing that you have that spirit's assistance and his power in his grave's dirt.

Lay out the dirt on a piece of foil or towel and let it dry out for a few days. Once fully dry, sift through the dirt to remove any roots or rocks etc.

For a specific spirits grave dirt I'll I call the spirit by name to assist me. Don't command the spirit you don't control them. (Please don't disrespect the graves and the graveyard)

One last thing.....

Offerings. A night of Spiritual veneration.

Recently I saw some posts for and by graveyard witches that encourages to another sisters to do certain things in their local grave as a part of practicing magic and move energy. 

Althought I’ve had some amazing and lovely experiences by myself during visits to the cementery, I want to make some advices for those who want to try some things in them, specially now that Samhain is coming closer and some of us go more ofter to look after our ancestors and stuff:

† First of all: personal protection. Do not carry energetic personal things with you (crystals, satches) for they can get the atention of the “graveyard residents” and drain their energy. Instead, take a protective thing with you, it can be a charm, a sigil or even better: a personal thing that a beloved being has given to you. Family shields are the best when you’re facing spirits.

† If you want to talk with someone who isn’t related to you by parenting, you must present yourself by your name and your name only, explaining why are you there and if you have a question for the spirit. Be kind and patient, you can’t know which circumstances brought that person to their tomb and some spirits aren’t even aware of ther physical lost and become very attachted to whoever shows them simpathy.

† I recommend to not use graveyards as a place to charge anything. Those are places for resting and sometimes waiting for gone people, and their own energy can bring chaos to your spells or charms. For exactly this same reason, I recommend TO NOT MAKE SPELLS IN A CEMENTERY. 

† If you have a special request for a late familiar or someone special (let’s say, you’re visiting the grave of an admired person which you feel spiritually related), then you can bring a thing with you, and that thing only can be imbued in their essence. Once again, ask permission first to the spirit to do it and request exactly what you need of them (their strenght, their skills...).

† You must know cementeries aren’t just inhabited by late spirits. Some entities can make their home there, and those can be completely harmless or dangerous. If for any reason you step towards them, you must be ready to protect yourself. Make some research of your local legends about these entities (per example, in Mexico we have the “nahuales”, a sort of warlocks that transmute into animals to spread curses on certain people), specially if you’re not familiarized with them.

† I read a post about “ghost water” and how to make it. Once again I recommend you to not do it, unless is the vehicle you want to take from a familiar or a respected person (as I said a little above this text) their essence.

† And last but not least, remember be always kind when you’re in a cementery. Do not feel affraid to give greetings and farewells when you stare at a certain grave, you can say nice compliments (we can’t know how many of them aren’t visited by their family anymore, and the children are very sensitive to that kind of attention) or even leave some presents if you want or if, once again, you’re going to make a charge in a grave. Be safe, be nice and of course, be magical.

DAY ONE (of a 3-day prayer)

Use as an ingredient in spells for spirit work, alone to increase psychic abilities, alone to work with spirits, or as you wish 🖤

Ingredients:

Salt of your choice // I used Epsom for protection

Mullein flower // increased psychic abilities

Yarrow // divination and psychic abilities

Bay leaves // protection

Patchouli // associated with the dead, also known as Graveyard Dirt, offering to Hades

Mugwort // psychic abilities, summoning spirits

Cedar leaves // summoning of spirits

Peppermint // offering to Hades, divination

Wormwood // summoning spirits, protection

Myrrh Gum // associated with the dead, protection, communing with spirits

Add all ingredients into a mortar and pestle and grind until smooth. I didn't use a lot, and I didn't measure. I just did a pinch of each herb.

graveyard conjure is great and all, but make sure you’re going in protected!

many rootworking brujas won’t enter the gateway of a graveyard unless their faces are covered with masks, veils, or large black hats, that way unwanted spirits cannot know them unless they reveal themself consensually. it’s a way to protect themself from unwanted spirits, and a way to respect the conjure of other witches who may be practicing brujeria nearby.
