I don't think people realizes enough that Tommy before Grace was already half dead. The war killed half of him so was his 1st love. He was so done for himself, the society he loves in the King he served and the war he participated but for his family, he aint. Plus, Tommy had ambitions. That was what's left of him. By hook or crook he has to succeed and rise to the ranks.

Tommy was a slave to his ambitions. He had it planned out and under control until he met Grace.

Grace is the very "anti" of what Tommy stood for and believes in. He hates the likes of her, as he should in his eyes. The war broke him. The cavalry disappointed him. He doesn't trust them. No justice and equality, he loathe them. He should have loathed her but he didn't. He put his life, his reputation heck even his family on the line for her.

She is at 1st the very opposite of him until he realizes they are one of the same. They may have stood in the opposite side of the lake, until it became in the middle and then side by side. She was his reflection.

Of course, Tommy wants what he cannot have or supposed to have. He didn't want anything or anybody but he sure wanted Grace. He wanted it all. He wanted all of her. Be bad but still have his saving Grace.

But Tommy changed. Something in him change the moment he knew Grace. She wasn't the enemy and poison she should have been in the eyes of Polly and everyone else, she was the vaccine, the drug, the medicine, the tonic he never thought he needed. She was there to mend his already broken heart.

So, to hell with the uniforms. To hell with the elites and high society. Damn those side chicks, too. They can all go to hell and burn as long as Tommy can hold Grace behind and kiss her neck as many times he wants. Everything seems to be alright for Tommy if Grace was there.

Tommy broke the rules. His own damn rules. This time not for his family, nor his ambitions or the society but for himself. Grace was the gift sent for him, even with what's left of him. Despite off and whatever is lacking, Grace stood by him and loved him, no matter what.

But maybe Grace was meant to break his heart, too. Not because she didn't love him or he didn't love her enough, but there are only 2 sides of Tommy in my opinion. Tommy in love with Grace and Tommy broken hearted with Grace.

Both the only times Tommy felt truly alive. So where do broken hearts go?
