They are usually classified into coarse, medium, fine, very fine, extra fine and super fine varieties that range from 40 to 360 grits and over it. In the beginning of the woodworking process, it is better to start with coarser sandpaper. However, as you move on to the later stages of woodworking like priming, painting and staining, you must use finer sandpapers. This helps in removing excessive paints and unwanted agents while maintaining the shimmer and shine of the table. The material used in making these sandpapers, the glue, and the backing paper of both these varieties of sandpapers are different from each other. There are open coat and closed coat sandpapers as well. For woodworking at home, especially if you have softwood material that comes with resin, the open coat sandpapers are the best.
