LIGHTSABER COMBAT - FORM V: SHIEN / DJEM SO
AKA The Perseverance Form or The Way of the Krayt Dragon.
âOne must question any discipline that has lethal potential. However, if it serves to suppress violent opposition and preserve peace, I believe it is a discipline worth knowing.â
Simply put, what Form III had as passive, Form V turned into active.
Okay, not that simple.
Form V was born when practitioners of Form III, Soresu, felt that their âultimate defenseâ, though effective, was just too much time-consuming. Taking inspiration from Form II, the elegant slices and maneuverability of Makashi, Form V was created.
Form V is defense without sacrificing offense. Itâs not just counter-attacking, but countering and pressing forward, dominating the opponent until they make a mistake.
There are two variations of Form V:
Shien, which is the Form V focused on reflecting blaster shots against their originâŚ
⌠and Djem So, focused on reflecting the momentum of a lightsaber back at the enemy.
Positive Aspects: not as agile as Form IV, not as passive as Form III, not as light-hitting as Form II, Form V is the one that best uses the reaches of the user without sacrificing his/her defenses, with powerful close-quarters swings for both striking and blocking.
Negative Aspects: both Shien and Djem So modes physically require much more from their users than the other lightsaber forms, due to its focus on complete domination of their opponents.
Form V practitioners are always on the move, always expecting to rebuke and attack and charge against their enemies - so, though not as aggressive as Ataru, Form V was still more violent than the previous forms.
That is why itâs said that Form V is âpeace through superior firepowerâ.
Form V, also known by its two guiding principles Soresu and Djem So, was a lightsaber fighting technique. At its core, Form V used bold attacks to turn an opponentâs defense against them, whether by deflection or dueling. Form V was Anakin Skywalkerâs not-so-subtle form of choice.

"ONLY THROUGH FIRE IS A STRONG SWORD FORGED."
Finalizing the design for my OC Sokkone! Trying to make a last name for him.Â
who notice Kanan change to Form V in the Episode: Form V combat was characterized by power attacks and defense immediately followed by a counter-strike.
Form V: Shien and Djem So
Form V (Shien & Djem So, The Way of the Krayt Dragon, The Perseverance Form) was the the fifth form of lightsaber combat recognized by the Jedi Council. This form was created by Soresu practitioners to answer its lack of offensive capabilities. This form is split into two variants: Shien and Djem So. Shien leans more toward blaster fire deflection, but is used more offensively than Soresu. Itâs all about aiming the blast back at the shooter or other targets. Shien uses tight moves, defense covers and searching for opportunities for counter attacks. Many say that Shien is essentially Soresu with a Makashi mentality. The downside, however, is that it is weak against single opponents. Djem So is optimized for lightsaber combat and is the most physically demanding form of the seven. It is strength-oriented combat that relies on powerful offense and strong defense. Djem So tries to overpower the opponent with brute force and is thus usually the form used by Sith Lords. Since it is so focused on strength, this form lacks mobility and the stamina of the practitioner can be worn out quickly. Notable practitioners are Darth Bane, Darth Vader, Darth Malgus, Ulic Qel-Droma, and Adi Gallia
âYou will doubtless encounter many situations with multiple assailants. To better protect yourself from blaster fire without compromising your offensive capabilities, use the Shien form." Â - Kavar
