Fluffy July Day 20 @fluffyjuly
Pairing: Tanizaki x Tachihara (Bungo Stray Dogs)
Junichiro grabbed his coffee off the counter with a soft thanks. He avoided eye-contact with the barista as he turned and headed towards the table over by the cafe window. Darn, they'd made eye-contact and his pulse was racing again. He finally let out a breath he'd been holding when he arrived at this destination and saw two familiar faces.
Seated on the same side next to one another, the dark-haired pair seemed lost in their own little world. That was pretty much the normal for them nowadays. Junichiro set down his drink then sat across from the pair. They glanced at him at the same time.
"Good morning, Ranpo-san, Poe-san." Junichiro hummed with his best smile.
"Mooorning." Ranpo said as he raised a hand in a half-hearted wave. Next to him the brown-haired man nodded in agreement. Ranpo's gaze fell to the cup on the table. He tilted his head and asked, "Why does your cup say 'Johnny Cheeto'?"
"Oh! Uh!" Junichiro jumped and quickly put his hands around it, covering said name completely. It was far too late, however, and now that the question had been asked he needed to answer.
His shoulders slumped in defeat as he sighed, "Michizo, er... I mean, the barista refuses to write my name correctly no matter what I do. I think he really hates me. Should I start going to another cafe?"
Edgar's gaze fell to the cup once Junichiro released it. He shifted a bit uncomfortably where he sat then glanced at Ranpo before he looked off to the side and muttered, "Um... actually, I think-"
"Look at the silly face he added. He's flirting with you." Ranpo said bluntly. He picked up his breakfast pastry and took a big bite.
"Wha-!" Junichiro shrieked. He stared at the pair in disbelief as Edgar wiped some of the jelly filling off Ranpo's cheek for him. He looked down at the cup and, yeah, there was a weird little face made to look like it had angry eyes and a wiggly mouth.
That was a common thing, though. He just thought the guy liked to draw. Maybe he was really into art in his downtime. A quick glance at other cups on nearby tables and he noticed no other cheeky little faces.
Junichiro's cheeks were suddenly super warm. He shook his head and exclaimed, "There's no way!"
Junichiro's whole face was burning now. He couldn't help it. Just the thought made his heart start to race again. If there was even the slightest chance... his heart fluttered quickly. He tucked a stray strand of hair behind his left ear then asked softly, "You really think so?"
Ranpo paused right before he took another bite of his breakfast. He blinked at the redhead, as if waiting for him to come to a realization himself. When that didn't happen he grabbed Edgar's left hand and pointed it at his junior so the ring there was in his face while he asked, "Who here knows what they're talking about? The married ones or mister single-and-sad-about-it?"
"I'm not..." Junichiro muttered under his breath. "...that sad."
"Take it from me," Ranpo said with a mouthful of food, "Be direct. He might even give you candy." He released his husband's hand.
"I think that's only something that works on you..." Edgar mumbled.
While those two talked among themselves, Junichiro turned and looked across the shop at the counter. There, he watched as Michizo laughed when a coworker said something. Though it clearly hadn't been meant to be a joke judging by Akutagawa's expression.
Junichiro was focused on the other redhead. He had such a nice smile even though he wore a tough-guy persona. Joyous and stunningly confident, it was one of the first things Junichiro really liked about him.
Though he really didn't think the sentiment was returned. At least not before. Maybe he'd been misreading things the whole time. Maybe he should just be brave about it. He could make the first move, why not? It wasn't that scary. His trembling hand was for an entirely different reason!
Junichiro stood suddenly and headed up to the counter. Luckily, he was the only one there so all eyes were on him. Maybe unluckily. Both men behind it stopped their conversation and turned towards him as soon as he was close enough and Junichiro stiffened.
Oh, no. Junichiro could feel himself freezing up. Speak! Just say something! He was looking goofier by the second! Panic set in and Junichiro ended up kind of shouting the first thing that popped into his head.
There was silence as Michizo stared at him totally deadpan. Next to him, Akutagawa snorted and laughed under his breath then went into a little coughing fit. It was only then that Junichiro's mind seemed to catch up with what just happened. Oh no.
Junichiro stiffened before he shook his hands and head wildly. "I mean! Somewhere else of course! Um-!"
A door opened behind the baristas and Atsushi stepped out of the kitchen holding a tray of freshly baked goods. He bumped into Michizo as he walked past, forcing him to take a step closer to the counter.
"Oops, clumsy me. Sorry." Atsushi hummed. He glanced at Junichiro, smiled, then continued with his task. All the while Akutagawa's gaze followed him the entire time, to the point that he actually turned his head as the other man walked by.
That bump seemed to knock some sense into Michizo. He cleared his throat and crossed his arms. With his tough guy frown upon his face he held his chin in the air and muttered, "I don't really care for the stuff. I just work here."
Junichiro's shoulders slumped. He should've known. His voice was barely above a whisper when he said, "Oh, all right."
"I like alcohol, though," Michizo continued loudly. "We could go out for drinks... if you think you can keep up."
Junichiro immediately perked up with a little gasp. This was an unexpected development. As was the fact that Michizo's face was so red. The guy also wouldn't look directly at him. Whoa. The guy was even cuter than he realized. Junichiro stood there like an idiot and simply blinked.
It wasn't until the other redhead sucked his teeth that Junichiro realized he'd never responded. He needed to rectify that immediately. He was just a tad louder than he intended to be when he yelled, "Great, that sounds great! I'm free whenever!"
