It was weird being in a school after dark.
Heâd been in a school after theyâd closed for the day only once, when he was actually attending. But that had been an incident he really preferred not to reminisce on. But even then, it wasnât this late. And heâd been trying to leave, rather than going inside.
And that school hadnât been abandoned for decades, either.
âAaaany ghosts in here?â Arthur swallowed as he rolled his flashlight between his palms. The beam swung over dilapidated tiles caked in dirt and dust, and along the rooting wood of the walls where water stained it until it sagged. He felt like he was in a video game. Specifically, one of Viviâs scary-ass ones. He swore if he heard clicker sounds he was gonna drop his bag and haul ass--
But it was quiet, unnervingly so and he kept moving. At least he didnât have to set anything up tonight. All the non-portable gear had already been prepped earlier in the day, when itâd been light out and not the entrance to Phasmophobia But in Real Life. Heâd put out cameras and some sensors heâd monkeyed together in the garage, and now all he had on him was the stuff he needed on his person, tucked in a canvas bag on his hip.
His sneakers squeaked on the age linoleum, and he winced at how much it echoed. This place felt... weird. But it was hard to tell if it was haunted by evil spirits weird, or empty school liminal space weird. Right now he was going to pretend it was the latter, because he preferred not to get possessed or have something scary grab his arm or something.
Which meant he was prepared more for the former, knowing his luck.
So far itâd been empty though, and he hummed in a thoughtless way. The next part of the school was in a separate building, across a fenced in yard with some old playground equipment. Heâd seen it from the parking lot. So far this side of the school seemed safe, so he might as well check out the other part.
The door outside squealed when he opened it, a rusty grating noise from the metal joints as it scraped its way open. He winced as it did, but at least itâd opened at all. It looked like rain had done a number to it, the face of it pocked with red spots of rust. It hung open even when he let go, and Arthurâs feet crunched dried grass underfoot as he made his way out into the yard. It was a little overgrown, but it looked like there were stepping stones that formed shallow spots without--.
Arthurâs train of thought vaulted off the rails and promptly exploded with a tiny mushroom cloud. His eyebrows jumped and a frown pulled at his mouth. Was....there a kid here? He could see a girl, over in the playground, between the swing sets and one of these tube slides. He frowned a little harder, and inched his way in that direction. It wasnât safe to be out this late at night, let alone in a place like this. He hoped she wasnât homeless or something.Â
âHello?â
There's a tug on Artie's sleeve. The little girl beams brightly up at her. "What happened to the frog's car when it broke down? -- It got toad!" Before she can even say a word, the girl disappears, only the sound of her giggling remaining.

Artie stared in shock for a moment at the spot where the mysterious girl once stood. Fear flashed in her eyes as she registered that sheâd just seen another ghost. However, before she could go into full panic mode, it clicked that sheâd just been told a joke. A horribly good pun at that too. The mechanicâs emotions were torn in two. All she could do was stand frozen in place as she involuntarily giggled with kind of nervousness to her voice.
âI... gotta get out of here....â
Rocking back and forth on her heels, Maisy can hardly contain her laughter enough to get out the joke. "How do ghosts stay in shape?" She raises her hand above her mouth. "They exorcise daily."
The haunt watched the small child spirit try not to giggle. And waited patiently... Until he heard the absolutely terrible joke. It made him lean back, and exhale a heavy sigh. Several seconds of silence... And then the ghost was unable to contain himself, as he began to chuckle.
âAlright, you got me. As bad as it was, that was clever and very amusing, little one. You got me laughing. You get a sticker for that one.â
One large hand reached out towards Maisy, and softly ruffled her hair. Much in the way an older brother would, or amused parent.
Maisy popped up behind Arthur, pulling on his mechanical arm. "Time flies like an arrow." She didn't miss a beat, spinning herself with his hand. "Fruit flies like a banana."
Arthur jumped someone coming up behind him, but he let out a startled laugh hearing the joke. âOh wow. Thatâs a pretty clever joke.â Arthur smiled, crouching down. âI got a pretty good one too. You wanna hear it?â

@flowerbow replied:
Maisy bounced up and down excitedly at the idea of getting a joke in return. "Yes, please!"
Arthur grinned. âWhat do you call a fly without wings?â
