KetosisĀ is one of the natural states of the body, when it is almost completelyĀ fueledĀ byĀ fat. This is normal duringĀ fasting, or when on aĀ strict low-carbĀ diet, also called aĀ keto diet.Ā Okay, so if you remember from biology,Ā fatĀ is also known asĀ emergency stored energy, The āKeto-āĀ in Ketosis is coming fromĀ ketonesĀ -Ā ketones are little molecules produced by the bodyĀ when we eat fatĀ and they are used asĀ alternative fuelĀ when our bodiesĀ run out of blood sugar/glucose.
These ketones are produced when you eat very few carbs (the main source of blood sugar) and only moderate amounts of protein (excess protein is converted to blood sugar).
SHOCKER: BEFORE THE GLUCOSE INDUSTRY WENT UP, KETONES WERE OUR MAIN ENERGY FUEL
When the circumstances are met, the process is as follows:
The liver transforms the fat into ketones -> ketones enter blood stream -> act just like glucose and is even more efficient -> and they can be used by the brain as well!
Important noteĀ here: the brain is a demanding organ, of course it is, with all the stress all around and activities, but it canāt sustain itself with fat, it can sustain itself with ketones and/or glucose.
Another impediment to using fats as fuels is the high level of insulin, the higher the insulin, the less fat you burn, the more fat you store!
That being said,Ā as the levels of the fat-storing hormone insulin levels become very low, and fat burning increases dramatically.
You thus get easy access your fat stores, and can burn them off.
Ā Bonus: it can reverse type 2 diabetes!
āSo what does a Ketodiet really come down to?ā-Become a fat burner instead of a sugar burner.
Ketones are brain fuel.
Itās a common misconception that the brain needs carbs. The truth is that the brain happily burns carbs when you eat them. But if you donāt eat too many carbs, the brain is happy to burn ketones instead.Now as with every good thing, too much and it can turn bad.What I mean by that is that if you starve yourself indefinitely youāll reach ketoacidosis, this is why I mentioned a low-carb diet. So you can eat and still maintain your ketosis state.
Here is a chart that shows the ketones levels inside your blood and their recommended levels. Ketoacidosis starts from 10+, usually 15+.
If you have a functioning pancreas that can produce insulin ā for example, you donāt have type 1 diabetes ā it would be extremely hard or, most likely, impossible to get ketoacidosis even if you tried. Thatās because high ketone levels result in release of insulin, that shuts down further ketone production. In other words, the body has a safety net that normally makes it impossible for healthy people to get ketoacidosis on purpose by any means.
However, there areĀ 3 exceptions, where ketoacidosis isĀ possibleĀ (even if rare) on a keto diet, andĀ extra caution is mandatory:
Type 1 diabetes: As your body lacks insulin you need to make sure you inject what you need. Youāll need less on keto, but still some.
Ā Medication with SGLT-2 inhibitorsĀ for type 2 diabetes.Ā
Breastfeeding: In very rare cases a keto diet when breastfeeding can result in ketoacidosis, so you need to adapt the diet to be safe.Ā
Ketoacidosis makes you feel very sick, nauseous and extremely weak.
Thereās a simple treatment if you suspect this may be happening: eat some carbohydrates right away (a couple of fruits or a sandwich or a glass of juice).
If you have type 1 diabetes take more insulin. Then contact emergency medical services if you do not immediately start feeling better.
So please, but please, be self-conscious, not just with these but with everything in regards to you and your safety in life.
On a personal note: while I was still performing sport, waterpolo, I used to get on a ketodiet temporarily (it took 3 months for me for the effect to show up) and then Iād drop it off, that is because I was burning up all the fat, increasing my muscle size and capacity/force, and when I ran out of fat, I started to retain water inside the body, damaging my muscles, and getting incredibly fatigued (I was extremely pushy with my limits), but doing this on and off did increase my performance as a professional sportive player a lot.
The disadvantage is, now that I am no longer a sportive, the fat replenish speed is extremely high, one year ago, when I dropped sports in order to enjoy life, I was at 100 kgs, with almost no fat. Now, I weight 136 kgs, lost the muscle mass due to no more effort, but replaced it with around 40-46 kgs of fat. And it is hard.
āWhy donāt you use the diet?ā
Because, diets can only help in about 40% to 50%, the rest of 50% to 60% has to be from yourself, you gotta move, you gotta do something, to facilitate the ketosis stasis, because you can enter ketosis, but if you do not move, it will stay/remain at a balanced level with insulin, basically your fat gains will stay on 0 and what I mean by that, 0 is a neutral state, it is the state where what you add is immediately burned, but nothing more than that. You donāt gain more weight, but you donāt lose either.
Now,Ā I really had the pleasure of writing this article, because one of my biggest regrets is that I stopped with my sport carrier. From energized to lethargic in one year. And I can provide photos of myself as well if requested, I donāt mind. Not at all.
SoĀ please, give yourself a shot, make yourself your own temple, and take care of yourself, everyoneĀ can do this.Ā I VOUCH FOR IT. EVERYONE ONE CAN DO THIS. It only takes DETERMINATION, PATIENCE, TRUST, SELF-APPRECIATION AND LOVE.
