From isinglass to denarii (part 2 of 6). The best way to understand what is being said (and left out!) in historical recipes is to try them out! During the reconstruction of the recipe for fish glue impressions of coins and medals from the Eikelenberg MS I discovered that fish glue is tricky (and sticky)! I experimented with different glue-to-water ratios to make it pourable. Making rings of candle wax around my coins that were actually waterproof was also a challenge. After having poured both uncoloured and coloured (with saffron) fish glue solutions on my coins, all I could to was wait until the glue was dry to see how my impressions would turn out.
