A place filled with the gentle lull of warm, tropical breezes, the sweet scent of salt water in the air, and the distant music of lively bars and nightclubs.
It was a far cry from the bustling city of Midgar, a place where people came to relax, to unwind, and to escape.
It was Aerithβs idea to come here. She said it was best we could all use a day to get away from everything. No one complained. Just packed their bags and we were all off.
We were now standing on top of the warm sand, watching the sun sink behind the horizon, casting a brilliant hue of orange, pink, and red over the waterβs surface.
Zack was already in a lighthearted mood, slapping high-fives and grinning. βYou guys ready?β He called out, his voice boisterous.
Zack smirked, his eyes shifting to me and Tifa.
βYou guys are about to go down,β he said, his voice cocky. βTeam Aerith canβt be beat.β
Tifa rolled her eyes, smiling. βWeβll see about that, you big show-off,β she retorted.
I scoffed, eyeing Zackβs tall frame.
βThat isnβt fair,β I said, my voice laced with a hint of playful annoyance. βZack is taller. Heβll be able to get the ball through us like itβs nothing.β
Zack chuckled, his smirk growing wider. βYouβre already complaining, huh? The game hasnβt even started yet.β
Aerith giggled, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
βOh, stop it, you two,β she said, putting her hands on her hips. βYouβre both good at different things. Itβs not just about height. Strategy, skill, and teamwork are equally important.β
Zack raised his eyebrows, his smile growing. βYeah, but Iβm still taller,β he said, his voice teasing.
I shot back, my voice confident. βWeβre going to beat your asses,β I retorted.
Zack let out a mock sigh, raising his hands in surrender. βAlright then, let the game begin,β he declared, the smile still on his face.
The game began, the sound of the volleyball hitting the sand filling the air. Tifa and I were on one side, facing Zack and Aerith on the opposite side. The sound of rustling sand was the only thing breaking the silence of the serene beach.
We were all moving around, each of us trying to position ourselves in the best way to send the ball flying back over to the opponents.
The competition was intense, and the game was tight. We were all sweating and panting, the sun beating down on us. Every time one of us hit the ball, the sound of it slapping against the sand and flying across to the other side filled the air.
βCome on! You guys are slow,β Zack shouted, his voice friendly yet challenging.
Aerith called out, her voice filled with excitement.
He grinned, his hand slamming down on the ball with a powerful spike, sending it flying over the net.
The ball touched the sand on the other side, and Zack let out a victorious cheer.
βMatch point, baby!β He exclaimed, pumping his fist in the air.
Tifa and I exchanged a look of frustration, but we couldn't help but laugh at Zackβs enthusiasm.
βNot fair,β I muttered, dusting the sand off my arms.
Zack sauntered over to us, a satisfied grin on his face. βFair is my last name,β he said, ruffling my hair affectionately.
I swatted his hand away, but I was fighting back a smile.
βYeah, yeah, you just wait. Weβll beat you next time,β I retorted.
Aerith clapped her hands together, a twinkle in her eye. βI think we all deserve a break and a dip in the ocean,β she suggested, looking at the setting sun.
βIβm with her,β Tifa chimed in, her eyes following Aerithβs gaze to the ocean.
The sun was casting a warm, golden hue over the water, the waves gently lapping against the shore.
Zack nodded, a lazy smile spreading across his face. βA cool swim sounds like heaven right about now,β he agreed.
Zack turned his gaze to where Cloud was sitting on the lounge chair. Cloud was watching the match, his expression aloof and unreadable.
Zack looked over to him, his voice a friendly call. βYou in, Cloud?β
Cloud looked up from his thoughts, his eyes meeting Zackβs. He shrugged slightly and replied, βSure.β
I stepped away from the group, wanting a momentary respite. βIβm going to go grab a drink,β I said, my voice a little higher from the heat.
Tifa chuckled, her eyes sparkling. βYou better not go and get too tipsy,β she teased.
They all made their way to the beach, a lively group of friends. Zack was carrying Aerith in his arms, their laughter filling the air.
Tifa followed behind, her long hair fluttering in the breeze. Cloud, however, was lagging behind, his footsteps slow and steady.
They walked closer to the water, the sounds of the waves growing louder. Zack was already making a beeline for the water, his eyes shining with excitement.
Tifa turned to Cloud, her eyebrows raised. βArenβt you going in?β she asked, her voice a little teasing.
Tifa grabbed Cloudβs arm and pulled him into the water, making him yelp as the cold water hit his skin. The others laughed at his reaction, their laughter filling the air.
Meanwhile, I was making my way to the nearby drinks area, where there were chilled beverages and refreshments.
I approached the counter, my eyes roaming over the options of drinks.
I decided on a simple choiceβlemonade. It was refreshing and sweet, the perfect beverage for a hot day at the beach.
The bartender nodded and started preparing my drink, pouring the cold, clear liquid into a tall glass over ice.
Once the drink was ready, the bartender handed it to me, the icy-cold glass making my fingers tingle.
I thanked them, payed, and made my way back to where the others were. The sound of their laughter echoed through the air, the waves crashing in the background.
I settled back into the lounge chair, the cool air providing a pleasant contrast to the warmth of the day.
As I sat there, I watched Zack and Aerith splashing each other, their laughter filling the air. Tifa and Cloud were also having fun, their expressions of relaxation and enjoyment.
As I sat on the lounge chair, observing the others, something caught my eye.
Tifaβs hands were lingering on Cloud, touching his arms, his shoulders. They had a closeness that seemed more than just friendship.
It made me feel a pang of somethingβan unfamiliar emotion that I couldn't quite identify. Maybe it was jealousy.
It was a strange feeling, this sudden twinge of jealousy. I had been harboring a crush on Cloud for years, maybe even since we first met. So what was this feeling now, seeing Tifa touch him so casually?
I watched as Tifa leaned closer to Cloud, her hand resting on his arm. They shared a small smile before laughing at something only they seemed to understand.
I took another sip of my drink, trying to ignore the growing feeling in my chest.
Why was I feeling this way? It didnβt make sense. Iβve always known Tifa and Cloud were close. So why did it sting so much?
Aerithβs voice cut through the air, calling out to me.
βY/N!β she called out, her melodic voice carrying over the laughter and chatter.
I snapped out of my thoughts, my gaze shifting from Cloud and Tifa to Aerith, who was waving to me from the water.
Aerith called out again, a playful glint in her eyes.
βAre you gonna sit there or are you gonna join us?β she repeated, her voice filled with a hint of a challenge. The others were nodding in agreement, their expressions inviting.
Zack grinned. βSheβs right, you know. Youβre missing out on the fun!β
I feigned a small smile. βIβll sit this one out!β I replied, my eyes avoiding Cloud and Tifa. βThe water looks chilly, and I donβt feel like getting a cold today.β
I didnβt want any of them to see the actual reason behind my decision. It felt too personal, too painful to share. So I hid behind the lie.
Tifa raised an eyebrow. βYou sure? The waterβs actually pretty warm.β
Zack chimed in, his voice teasing. βCome on, live a little! You donβt want to be the party pooper, do you?β
I quickly made an excuse, trying to mask my tumultuous emotions. βActually, I was going to go get another refill,β I said, forcing a smile.
As I got up and left the group behind, I caught a glimpse of Cloudβs eyes on me for a brief moment, but I looked away quickly, my heart racing.
I made my way to the bar, returning the glass and finding a stool to sit on.
As I sat there, the quiet hum of the bar and the chatter of the other patrons provided a soothing backdrop, but my mind was a whirlwind of thoughts.
Why was I feeling this way? Iβd had a crush on Cloud for so long, and I had always known Tifa and him were close. So why the sudden wave of jealousy?
The more I sat there, the more the thoughts churned within me.
I tried to push them aside, focusing on the cool atmosphere of the bar, but images of Cloud and Tifa kept plaguing my mind.
Each time I closed my eyes, I saw them smiling at each other, their hands touching, their closeness. It was like a dagger to my chest.
There was no reason for me to feel this way. Itβs not like Cloud was mine in the first place. I had no right to these feelings. He probably didnβt even see me in that way. He was likely only interested in Tifa.
As my thoughts spiraled, so did the doubts and insecurities. Tifa was gorgeous, with her stunning eyes and her beautiful long hair. Their chemistry was palpable, the years of connection and closeness evident in every laugh and touch.
What did I even have? I was nothing in comparison. They had a bond that was deeper than anything I could offer.
I mentally compared myself to Tifa, trying to be objective. I tried to see myself through Cloudβs eyes. What did I offer compared to her? I was a mess of self-doubt and insecurities. I was average looking at best. I had nothing to offer that she didnβt.
In every way, she was the superior choice.
And the worst part was that they had history. Years of shared memories and experiences, moments that I could never capture. Their connection ran deeper, their bond stronger. I was a newcomer, a late addition to their group. I didnβt have that closeness, that familiarity.
I made my way back to the group, my voice quivering as I waved at them.
βIβm heading to the hotel,β I said, my voice barely above a whisper. βNot feeling so great, so I think Iβll go rest.β
Zack and Aerith exchanged concerned glances, but Cloudβs eyes stayed locked on mine, his gaze unreadable.
Zack couldnβt help but poke fun at me, his teasing smile never leaving his face.
βCouldnβt handle that little loss earlier, huh?β he quipped, his voice light and playful.
Aerith shot Zack a disapproving look, rolling her eyes. βDonβt mind him,β she said, her voice warm and understanding. βGo get some rest, Y/N.β
I gave them a small smile, feeling a little embarrassed. βThanks,β I replied, forcing a smile.
I made my way back to the hotel, my steps feeling heavy with every passing moment. The walk back seemed longer than usual, the silence deafening.
As I entered the hotel room, I slumped onto the bed, the weight of my emotions pressing down on me like a ton of bricks. I couldnβt understand why I was feeling this way.
I shifted slightly, turning to lay on my back and gazing out of the window. The sun was slowly sinking below the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow over the hotel grounds.
I woke up, my eyes fluttering open. The clock on the bedside table showed that it was late, the night sky now completely dark.
I sat up, the silence of the room broken only by my own breathing. I couldn't sleep. I felt restless, like I needed to move.
The thought of air, of the cool, salty breeze on my skin, filled my mind. I couldn't stay inside. I needed to escape the confines of the hotel room.
I slipped out of bed. The room was dark, the only light coming from the faint glow of the moon shining through the window.
I quietly made my way to the door, my footsteps barely audible on the carpeted floor. I opened the door, the gentle sound of the latch clicking filling the quiet air.
I stepped outside, closing the door quietly behind me.
I made my way down to the beach, the cool night air wrapping around me like a cozy blanket.
The sand was soft beneath my feet, the only sound was the gentle lapping of the water against the shore. The moon hung low in the sky, casting a dim, silvery glow over the landscape.
I found a spot at the waterβs edge, gazing out at the vast, silent ocean.
I sat down, my feet buried in the cool sand. The sound of the waves provided a soothing background noise, the rhythmic crash of the water a gentle companion to my thoughts.
I closed my eyes, the silence of the beach a welcome respite from the turmoil within me.
I sat there, eyes closed, my thoughts a tangled mess. And then, in the moment of silence, I heard a soft sound.
It was almost imperceptible, but it was there. Like a whisper in the wind.
For a moment, I wondered if Iβd imagined it. My ears strained to pick up the sound again.
I knew I wasnβt alone. Someone had followed.
As he watched you walk away from the group, a strange sense of unease settled over me. You didnβt seem yourself, and he couldnβt shake the urge to follow her.
He tried to shake it off, telling himself that it was nothing. You were was just feeling a little off, thatβs all. But he couldnβt get the thought out of his head. Whyβd you leave?
βYou alright?β Zack asked, his eyes meeting Cloudβs.
He nodded, his voice tight. βYeah, Iβm good,β he replied, his eyes flickering toward the spot where you had disappeared.
He tried to play it cool, acting as if it wasnβt affected, but the words felt like a lie on his tongue. He couldnβt stop the questions that popped into his head.
Zackβs eyes followed Cloudβs, a small smirk on his lips.
βYou look a little off.β Zackβs voice was casual, but the hint of a teasing tone was there.
Cloud huffed, trying to brush it off. βIβm fine,β he repeated, his voice a little too defensive.
After a while, the group all started wrapping things up and making their way back to the hotel. The sun had set and now the sky was a deep, velvety black color. They all gathered their belongings and made their way towards the hotel.
After Cloud entering his hotel room, he quickly stripped off his damp beach shorts, his mind replaying memories of the day.
As he stepped into the shower, the warm water cascaded down his body, the water helping to wash away the salt and sand.
He closed my eyes, the spray of the water filling his ears.
The water helped, the warm, soothing heat of the stream feeling amazing on his skin. The tension in his shoulders began to ease, and a sigh escaped his lips.
He let the water run over his face, his mind still troubled by thoughts of you.
He turned off the water, grabbing a towel and stepping out of the shower. The hotel room was a bit chilly, and he wrapped the towel around his waist, the smooth fabric feeling nice against his skin.
He sat on the bed, his thoughts still circling. It was late, but he couldnβt sleep.
He slipped on a pair of shorts. The damp strands of his hair hung down over his forehead. He pushed them back, shaking them slightly.
The room was still, the only sound coming from the slightly open window, the faint whispering of the night breeze.
He let out a deep sigh, his shoulders slumping as he leaned back against the bed. Closing his eyes, he tried to push away the thoughts that were swirling in his head.
He could feel the sleep pulling him under, but part of him was still wide awake, his mind refusing to shut off.
After a few hours, he jolted awake by the sound of a gentle click. It was a small noise, almost imperceptible, but it had stirred him from his slumber.
He sat up, his eyes still heavy with sleep. He rubbed his eyes and stood up, walking over to the door.
He opened the door quietly, peeking out into the hallway.
He leaned out of his room, looking down the hallway. His eyes caught a glimpse of a figure turning the corner.
It was a quick flash, so quick he could have missed it if he blinked. He strained his eyes, trying to get a better look.
He grabbed his hoodie, sliding it on and pulling the hood over his head. He slipped on his sandals and stepped out of the room.
He exited the hotel, the night air a bit chilly against his skin.
He figured the beach was the most likely place for the figure to have gone. He set off in that direction, his eyes scanning the surroundings as he walked.
The moon hung low in the sky, casting a silvery glow over the beach. The sound of the waves provided a steady backdrop to his footsteps.
He arrived at the beach, his eyes immediately scanning the surroundings. The moon hung low in the sky, casting a silvery glow over the water. The sound of the waves was calming, but he hardly noticed it.
He stood there, his head tilting as he searched for any sign of the figure he had caught a glimpse of earlier.
He turned towards the shore as his eyes caught glimpse of a figure sitting alone on the shoreline.
He squinted his eyes, straining to see who it was. The figure seemed to be seated on the ground, facing out towards the water.
He slowly made his way towards the shoreline, the soft sand shifting with each step.
He could make out the shape of the figure, their slender form sitting quietly.
As he got closer, he finally recognized the figure.
βWhat are you doing out here alone?β
I slowly turned my head, my gaze falling on figure standing a few feet away.
The person removed their hoodie, their gaze steady on mine.
Those eyes. They look familiar.
βItβs late, and youβre out here alone,β Cloud repeated, his voice low and slightly gravelly.
I shifted a bit, the cool air caressing my skin. The waves lapped against the shore, their gentle lapping the only sound that broke the silence.
βI needed air,β I replied, my voice quiet.
Cloud nodded, his expression still serious.
βItβs not safe at this hour, yβknow,β he said, his voice a little stern. βEspecially for a girl alone.β
I scoffed a bit. βI can take care of myself,β I replied, my voice a little bit defensive.
Cloud huffed, his expression shifting to something more neutral.
βMaybe so,β he said reluctantly, βbut itβs still not a good idea to be out here alone so late at night.β
I turned my gaze back to the water, watching the moonlight reflect off the surface.
βI just needed to clear my head,β I murmured, not quite looking at him.
There was a short beat of silence, the only sound of the water lapping. Cloud stared at me from the back of my head, his gaze a bit intense.
Finally, I spoke, breaking the silence.
βYou can sit if youβd like,β I said quietly, not turning my gaze from the water.
Cloud considered for a moment before making his way over, his footsteps light against the sand. He sat down not too far from me, the distance between us a respect for the space.
For a few more moments, the silence continued. I was watching the water, the calming reflection of the moon providing some sort of comfort. Cloud sat there, the only other presence by my side, his eyes occasionally glancing in my direction.
I could feel his gaze on me, the weight of his stare like a physical touch. It was a bit unnerving, so I finally turned to look at him.
βYouβre staring Strife,β I muttered, my voice barely above a whisper.
I could feel a little bit of a blush creeping up my cheeks but it was too dark to notice.
Cloud blinked, his gaze snapping away quickly. βSorry,β he muttered, his voice low, his eyes still not meeting mine.
I wanted to ask him so many thingsβI had so many questions swirling in my mind, and this moment felt perfect for it. I felt like I was given an opportunity to uncover the truth, and yet I couldn't bring myself to do it. Why? Why was I so afraid?
I swallowed, closing my eyes for a moment to collect myself. What if he really did have something with Tifa? What if I was only hurting myself by finding out the truth?
The words stumbled out before I could stop them, the words escaping me in a rush of panic.
βSo you and Tifa,β the last word dragged on, and I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. I immediately regretted my words, my mind screaming
What was I THINKING?! I didnβt even know if he had an answer for me. But suddenly, I had blurted it out, the words hanging in the air.
βYou guys seem pretty close,β I mused, the words dripping with faux innocence.
Cloudβs eyes flicked to mine for a moment, his expression a bit wary. βWhat makes you say that?β he asked, his voice neutral.
I shrugged. βYou look... close. Real close. Like more than friends.β
Cloud huffed, his eyes still not meeting mine. βYouβve got a wild imagination,β he muttered.
I chuckled, leaning back on the sand a bit as I looked at him. βDonβt play dumb,β I taunted him, my voice playful. βYou and Tifa? You canβt tell me nothing is there.β
Cloud huffed again, rolling his eyes. βYouβre making things up,β he muttered. βWeβre just friends.β
I smirked a bit. βJust friends?β I repeated, chuckling. βYou sure about that?β
βWeβre just friends,β he repeated, his voice a little too quick.
βRight, just friends,β I agreed, my voice dripping with sarcasm. βCause real friends look at each other the way you two do...β
Cloud rolled his eyes again, his expression shifting to one of annoyance. βYouβre reaching,β he huffed.
βAm I, though?β I asked, leaning forward, a sly smile on my face. βCause to me, it looks a lot like someoneβs got a crush...β
Cloudβs gaze shifted momentarily, his eyes flicking from mine to my lips and then back to my eyes. I caught a quick flash of ...something? Desire, maybe?
βItβs not what it seems like,β he muttered, his voice low. He looked away.
βWeβre just... childhood friends,β he added. βI care about her and she cares about me. Thatβs it.β
βRight,β I murmured quietly, my voice barely above a whisper. I leaned back, my gaze shifting to the water. What was the truth? Did Cloud have feelings for Tifa? Or was he just hiding them well?
Cloud seemed sincere, but how could I really know the truth? Maybe he was trying to hide his feelings, good at concealing them... or maybe they really are just friends.
My thoughts were interrupted by a small gust of wind, the cool air sending a shiver down my spine.
Cloud was silent, his gaze still averted. We sat there for a few more moments.
Suddenly, Cloud broke the silence, his low voice cutting through the quiet.
βCan I ask you something?β he murmured, his eyes still not meeting mine.
I looked over at him, my curiosity piqued. βSure,β I replied, my voice quiet.
βWhy did you leave earlier?β Cloud asked, his voice a little stern but also tinged with a hint of concern.
I fidgeted a bit, looking down at my hands. βI just... wasnβt feeling well, I guess,β I murmured.
βBullshit.β Cloud huffed, his eyes still on mine.
βYou seemed okay when we arrived and I could tell you were having fun during the volleyball match,β he said. βWhat changed your mood?β
Cloud could read me like an open book, each micro expression and subtle change in my demeanor was not lost on him. It was as if he could see through my words, my thoughts, and into the core of my being.
βI know you well enough to tell when youβre hiding something,β Cloud said, his voice firm yet gentle. βSo tell me. What is it?β
I swallowed, looking down at my hands as I tried to keep my emotions in check.
βIβ's nothing...β I murmured, my voice a little shaky. βI justβ¦ I felt a little out of place.β
Cloud huffed again, his expression shifting to one of concern. βOut of place? How?β he asked.
I hesitated for a moment, my brain racing as I tried to find words. βItβs... itβs nothing, really,β I said, looking over at him. βIβm fine...β
Cloud shook his head, his eyes locked on mine. βYouβre lying,β he said. βSomethingβs bothering you. I can tell.β
I felt a pang of guilt in my chest. I wanted to tell him how I felt, but the words were stuck in my throat. I knew the truth, but I couldnβt bring myself to say it out loud.
I just shook my head and looked away. Hoping he would just quit asking.
I couldnβt look at him, my gaze fixed on the water. I felt a lump forming in my throat, the words I wanted to say stuck there.
βCloudβ¦β I began, my voice barely a whisper.
Cloud waited for me to finish my sentence, his eyes still locked on mine. I felt a rush of anxiety and fear. What would he say if I told him the truth?
The confession hung between us, unspoken but deafening. The truth was, I didnβt belongβnot like they did.
Tifa had history with him. Aerith and Zack were inseparable. And me? I was just... there. An extra in their story, the one who watched from the sidelines while Cloudβs eyes lingered on Tifa a little too long, while they shared private smiles that felt like a punch to the gut.
And it hurtβbecause I wanted to be seen too.
Not by anyone elseβjust him.
I wished heβd look at me like that just once, with warmth instead of indifference. But how could I compete with someone whoβd known him since childhood? Someone effortless and radiant and important?
A heavy silence washed over the two of us, as if the weight of my thoughts was tangible.
I wanted to tell him everythingβhow I felt, how I wanted him to look at me the way he looked at Tifa, how I wanted him to notice me, to want me.
But I couldnβt bring myself to say it. I already knew what the outcome would be. I was nothing compared to Tifa, and Cloud would never want me the way I hoped. I was being selfish, so selfish...
I took a deep breath, my emotions a tangled mess inside me. βI know this sounds stupid,β I finally admitted, my voice hushed. βBut I just... I wish youβd look at me the way you look at Tifa.β
The confession hung in the air, the weight of my words heavy between us. I braced myself for his response, my heart racing in my chest.
I brought my knees up to my chest and wrapped my arms around them.
βI know Tifa and you have a history,β I murmured. βYou both are childhood friends, and... and itβs clear you share something special.β
βShe understands you in ways I never couldβbecause sheβs known you forever,β I swallowed hard, pushing back the tears that threatened to surface.
βAnd I know I could never compare to her,β I added softly. βSheβs beautiful, kind, and strongβ¦what do I even have to offer compared to that?β
I continued to berate myself, the words coming out in a flood of insecurity and despair. βAnd I know itβs selfish, feeling this way about you when you and Tifa are so close. I shouldnβt feel this way, and I shouldn't even be telling you any of this, but I can't help it.β
βIβve had a crush on you for so long that it feels like Iβm drowning,β I confessed, my voice shaking. βSeeing you and Tifa together... it hurts, and I hate myself for it.β
βI know nothing will happen between us,β I muttered. βSo why canβt I stop feeling like this?β
I felt tears threatening to fall, but I blinked them back quickly. I didnβt want to cry in front of him. I didnβt want to look weak.
A bitter laugh escaped me.
βWhy do I want you to want me,β I whispered, more to myself than him, βthe way I want you?β
And oh, how I wanted him.
Every fiber of my being ached for him.
It was almost painful, the way my heart yearned for him.
It sounded pathetic out loudβdesperate, even. But it was the truth. Every time he looked at Tifa with that quiet fondness, it carved a hole in my chest deeper than any blade ever could. And here I was, confessing like some lovesick fool who never learned her place.
Cloudβs silence was deafening. Maybe this had been a mistake after all.
βForget it,β I said finally, looking out at the water.
I felt vulnerable and embarrassed, laying all my secrets out in the open like this. I shouldβve just stayed silent.
I was being ridiculous, telling Cloud how I felt. It was a waste of time.
And yet, some foolish, stubborn part of me wanted him to say something, anything in response to my confession.
I quickly wiped my eyes, my hands shaking as I stood up.
βLetβs forget this happened,β I muttered, forcing a chuckle that sounded more bitter than anything.
Cloud looked up at me, his piercing blue eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that made my breath catch.
There was something unreadable in his gazeβsomething raw and searching. His lips parted slightly, as if he wanted to say something... but the moment stretched between us, silent and heavy.
I held out my hand to him, an offer to help him up. He hesitated for just a second before reaching out, his fingers brushing against mine as I pulled him to his feet.
Our hands lingered longer than necessaryβa few seconds too manyβbefore I reluctantly let go.
The warmth of his touch still burned on my skin.
We stood there for a moment, the tension between us palpable.
Cloudβs gaze never wavered from mine, and I felt my breath hitch under the weight of his stare.
The silence stretched onβuntil finally, he spoke.
βY/N...β His voice was rough, hesitant.
I swallowed hard. Here it comes, I thought. The rejection. The pity.
I shook my head, cutting him off before he could continue. βDonβt,β I whispered. βDonβt say anything if itβs not the answer I want to hear.β
The words came out before I could stop them, a desperate plea to preserve what little dignity I had left.
Then, before he could react, I flashed him a teasing smirk, my voice dripping with playful challenge.
βCome catch me if you can, SOLDIER.β
And I took off, my bare feet kicking up sand as I sprinted down the moonlit shoreline.
It was reckless. It was ridiculous.
For onceβjust this onceβI wished the universe would let me have this moment with him alone without shattering it completely. I let myself believe, even if only for this fleeting moment... that maybe, just maybe, heβd chase after me.
My heart pounded in my chest as I ran, my thoughts a tangled mess of hope and fear.
βPlease run after me,β I silently pleaded. βPlease, please, please donβt let this be a stupid idea.β
I quickened my pace, the sound of my footsteps drowning out everything but the steady rhythm of my heartbeat and the whispers of my deepest desires.
My heart hammered in my chest, the air cold against my burning cheeks. I didnβt want to look back, didn't want to see whether he was watching me or not. I just kept running, my body moving on pure adrenaline and hope.
Footsteps behind me. Chasing.
A laugh bubbled up in my throat as I heard the sound of his bare feet hitting the sandβhard, fast.
He was actually chasing me.
I dared a glance over my shoulder, and there he wasβCloud Strife, sprinting after me with that same focused intensity he had in battle. But this time... it wasnβt about duty or survival.
βToo slow!β I called out breathlessly, grinning as I veered toward the shoreline where waves crashed just inches from my feet.
For once, his eyes werenβt searching for anotherβs in a crowd or lost in thought. They were locked onto mineβwild and bright under the moonlight.
His fingers finally grazed my wrist, spinning me around to face him. That gasp of laughter-turned-breathless hope lodged itself permanently into my chest.
My breath caught in my chest as his strong arms encircled my waist, picking me up effortlessly off the ground. I let out a yelp of both surprise and delight, my hand instinctively grasping at his shoulders for balance.
But I playfully squirmed, trying to wriggle free from his grasp, a laugh escaping my lips.
βLet me go!β I protested, the words a playful plea rather than a desperate cry for help.
Cloud just smirked, his arms holding onto me with a secure, possessive hold.
βNot a chance,β he replied, his voice low and taunting.
I wriggled and squirmed, twisting and turning in his grasp like a wild animal, determined to escape. But Cloud was just as determined, a look of pure exhilaration in his eyes as he held on tighter.
We wrestled like wild things, our feet kicking up a cloud of sand as we ran across the shoreline.
Each time I thought Iβd finally gotten away from him, his fingers would find me again, grabbing hold and pulling me back into his grasp. His touch was both thrilling and maddening.
I stumbled mid-chase, my foot catching on an uneven patch of sand as I tumbled forward. Cloudβs amused chuckle rumbled behind me just before his hand shot out to catch me.
But instead of letting him pulling me up, I yanked hard on his wrist, sending us both crashing into the soft sand with a thud.
We landed in a tangled heap, breathless and sandy, the sound of waves mixing with our laughter.
Cloud groaned playfully beneath me. βReal mature,β he grumbledβbut when I lifted myself up slightly to meet his gaze his smirk was all fond exasperation. Like he didnβt even mind being bested by my little ambush.
I found myself looking down at him, our bodies pressed together in a messy heap on the sand. Our laughter faded into the sound of our labored breathing, our chests brushing against each other with each inhale and exhale.
My gaze fell to his lips, my eyes tracing the soft curve of his mouth. And as my gaze flickered back up, I found his eyes locked right back onto mine.
We stayed there, frozen in that moment, the world around us fading away. All I could hear was the sound of the ocean, the pounding of my own heart, scared that he could hear it in this exact moment.
I pushed myself up, shaking off the sand before offering him a handβhalf-heartedly tugging him upright.
βItβs your fault I tripped,β I accused playfully, jabbing a finger at his chest. βYou distracted me.β
Cloud raised an eyebrow, dusting himself off with slow deliberation before leveling me with that infuriatingly composed smirk.
βOh yeah?β he challenged, voice low and teasing as he stepped just slightly closerβenough to make my pulse jump. βAnd how exactly did I distract you?β
The question hung between us like bait⦠daring me to admit it out loud.
I smirked, tilting my chin up.
βYouβre so slow, Strife,β I teased. βTry harder.β
And with thatβI bolted again, kicking up sand behind me as I sprinted down the shoreline.
Behind me came the rustle of fabric hitting the sandβCloud ditching his hoodie in one swift motion before chasing after me. His footsteps pounded closer, faster than before... almost predatory in their pursuit.
I let out a screech of laughter as Cloud suddenly scooped me up into his arms, cradling me in bridal style. My arms instinctively wrapped themselves around his now bare shoulders, feeling the warm, firm muscles that lined his back.
βCloud!β I exclaimed, part surprised and part exhilarated. βWhat are youβ?!β
Cloud just chuckled, the sound of it sending a thrill down my spine. He held me firmly, his arm tight around my waist while the other supported my legs.
βWhat does it look like I'm doing?β he replied, his voice filled with that familiar cocky arrogance.
His bare, muscled chest was so close I could feel his heart thudding as he easily carried me across the sand. I wanted to protest, to demand he put me down... but damn it all, being held like this was just too exhilarating and he knew it.
My protests were cut short as Cloud stepped right into the water with me still in his arms, my legs kicking out wildly in a vain attempt to escape his grip.
βCloud, no! No, no, no!β My words were a frantic protest in perfect contradiction to the laughter bubbling in my chest.
The salty ocean splashed around us as he moved further into the water, the waves lapping at my waist. I squirmed and struggled, but Cloudβs grip was unyielding.
My grip on him only tightened as the cold water hit my skin, my legs instinctively wrapping around his waist and my arms locking around his neck in a death grip.
βItβs so cold!β I whined, half-laughing, half-scolding. βCloudβyou asshole!β
But he only smirked down at meβinfuriatingly smugβhis bare chest warm against mine even as the waves lapped at us both. βYou ran,β he pointed out unhelpfully, like that justified anything.
And when I tried to glare, his grin just widened.
If anyone had told me this morning that Cloud Strife would be manhandling me into the ocean like some sort of overconfident sea monster... Iβd have called them insane.
I huffed indignantly, refusing to give him the satisfaction of a response. Instead, I tightened my grip around his neck and shifted closer, burying my face against his bare shoulder.
Even through the chill, his skin was warm and smooth under my cheek. I could feel my heart pounding against my ribsβnot just from our little scuffle, but from the proximity of him. From the feeling of his hands on my hips. The way he was holding me like I weighed nothing...
The damn man was just completely unfair.
My sentence turned into a high-pitched, undignified scream as Cloud, the jerk that he was, just casually dropped into the water with me still in his arms.
I landed with a comical SPLASH, coming up spluttering. It was even colder than when my legs were just dipped in, the water enveloping my entire body.
I shivered, pushing wet hair out of my face as I stared up at Cloud, who still somehow managed to look annoyingly good.
βCLOUD!β I shrieked, immediately splashing a huge wave of water straight at him.
He tried to dodgeβand failed spectacularly, seawater slapping him right in the face. His usually perfect hair was now soaked and sticking to his forehead as he blinked saltwater out of his eyes.
But instead of looking irritated, he laughed. A real, breathless chuckle that made my stomach flip dangerously.
And thenβrevenge. He retaliated with a splash twice as big, sending me stumbling back from the sheer force of it while I squealed like an idiot.
After a longβand honestly exhaustingβwater fight, I finally had enough. I was gasping for breath from laughing, my arms and legs aching and weary after all that frantic splashing.
Cloud, of course, looked infuriatingly smug, half-hidden under the water with that goddamn smirk on his lips.
βYou accept your defeat?β he taunted.
I scowled at himβbut the effect was ruined by the smile teasing the edges of my mouth. I splashed him a final time, half-hearted.
βShut upβ I retorted but the words came out breathless and lacking any real heat.
I was tired. Exhausted, even. My limbs felt like lead, every muscle in my body screaming in protest from all the playing around.
Cloud, damn him, still looked annoyingly energized, all long limbs and lean muscle under the surface of the water.
He chuckled at my feeble attempt at retaliation. βAdmit it. I won.β
My tone was determined despite my exhaustion. I refused to admit defeat. I wasn't going down that easy. Not when Cloud was sporting that cocky smirk and acting all too damn smug.
So, in a final burst of defiant energy, I splashed at him againβeven as my body protested in protest. The water sprayed up at him, soaking his face even as my legs trembled from exertion.
We continued our fierce fight in the water, the night air filled with the splashes and our breathless laughter. I was determined to get him back, even as I struggled to keep up my splashesβmy muscles aching, my breathing labored.
But every time I sent a wave his way, he always seemed to dodge, his reaction time infuriatingly fast. Heβd splash back at me twice as hard, making me squeal and curse. It was like the more tired I got, the more energized he became.
The moonlight caught the water droplets glittering on his skin as we wrestled like kids in the shallows, our laughter carrying over the waves.
At some point, he caught my wrist mid-splash and yanked me forward. Our momentum sent us crashing into the surf again, but this time when I surfacedβ¦
We were nose to nose. Breathing heavy. Sea-salt lips almost touching.
And suddenlyβneither of us was laughing anymore.
The laughter died somewhere between us, replaced by ragged breaths and the pounding of our hearts. My gaze was locked onto his, our faces only inches apart. The waves lapped against us, but I barely noticed how cold they were. All I felt was the heat radiating off his skin.
His grip was still tight on my wrist, and I was suddenly, intensely aware of the feel of his fingersβlong and callousedβwrapped around my pulse point.
My thoughts were a tangled mess of confusion and heat, every part of me hyper-aware of every point of contact with him. The way his chest rose and fell with each breath, inches from mine... the feeling of his legs against mine under the water.
And his eyes... god, his eyes. Those eyes that were always so guarded, so difficult to read. Right now, they were dark and unguarded. Almost... hungry.
β« NOW PLAYING: IM KISSING YOU BY DESβREE β«
The moment was broken by a wave suddenly catching me off guard, my foot slipping on some unseen rock on the ocean floor. I teetered, my body tilting precariouslyβbut before I could topple over, Cloudβs arm was there, wrapping around my waist and pulling me back against him.
βI got you,β he murmured, his voice right against my ear.
I could feel every contour of his lean body pressed against me, heat radiating through the thin, wet fabric of my clothes.
I turned my head slightly, pulling away just enough to catch his gaze againβhis eyes as deep and unreadable as the ocean around us.
My hands found purchase on his biceps, gripping them tightly for balance or maybe just because I could. His muscles were hard under my palms, tensed from holding me steady against the pull of the waves.
And suddenly, the cold water didnβt matter anymore. Neither did our stupid splashing war.
All that existed was this momentβthis impossible tension between us that I couldnβt name... but didnβt want to end.
His voice was a rough whisper, barely audible over the wavesβ
The way he said my name sent a shiver down my spine, one that had nothing to do with the cold water. His eyes were locked onto mine. All I could read in them was a long, yearning look.
I shouldβve pulled away though. Shouldβve laughed it off and splashed him again just to break this unbearable tension between us.
But instead... I stayed frozen in place, my fingers still gripping his arms like an anchor.
And when his gaze flicked down to my lips for half a second.
Cloudβs gaze was burning when it rose back up to meet mine, his voice a rough murmur. βThereβs...β he started, pausing for a moment.
A beat passed before he took a breath, and with it came something like a confession.
βThere has only ever been you,β he said firmly. It was a raw, emotional admission.
Not just a simple statement of fact, but a declaration that echoed in the space between us, full of yearning and feeling.
The words hung heavy in the air, and I felt my heart beat so impossibly fast it was painful.
Cloudβs eyes never left mine, the words flowing out like a dam breaking. βNobody else,β he repeated and this time, there was an echo of desperation in his voice.
βYouβre all I want. I canβt stop thinking about you, canβt stop wanting you. Itβs... itβs like a fever in my brain and it just wonβt go away. Iβve tried. God, Iβve tried.β
His grip tightened on my arms, his hands trembling just a little as they gripped my skin.
Cloudβs breathing was ragged, his eyes fixed on my face as he said it again, the words heavy with emotion. βThereβs only ever been you, and there will be no one but you.β
It was almost a plea, like he was begging me to believe himβto understand just how deeply he meant the words.
I could barely breathe, my chest tight with the weight of his confession. Here was Cloud, the strong and stoic ex-SOLDIER, confessing that... I was the one he wanted. That I was all he wanted.
His voice was rough, unsteadyβlike the words had been carved out of him. βAnd Iβm sorry.β A shaky exhale escaped him. βI shouldβve shown you sooner. Shouldβve made sure you knew... But I was scared.β
His thumb brushed against my waist where he held meβbarely a touch, yet it seared like fire through the water between us.
βScared you didnβt feel the same,β he admitted, voice cracking on the confession like it physically hurt to say it aloud. βScared of rejection... but more than that. Scared of losing you if I got this wrong.β
For once in his life, Cloud Strife wasnβt composed or guarded or untouchable.
He was just... laid bare.
And for me. Only ever for me.
His hands slid down to my waist, holding me steady as his gaze locked onto mineβintense, unshakable.
βSo no,β he said firmly. βThereβs nothing between me and Tifa. There never has been.β His grip tightened just slightly, like he needed me to feel the truth in his words. βBecause itβs always been you.β
And god help meβI believed him.
Every doubt Iβd ever had... every jealous ache... every time I convinced myself that I wasnβt good enough, that she was better for him than I could ever beβ¦
All of it dissolved in the raw sincerity of his voice.
You looked so beautiful under the moonlightβyour skin glistening with water, your breath still uneven from the splashing. The way youβd laughed earlier, loud and free and unguarded... It took everything in him not to kiss you right then and there.
But earlierβwhen you talked yourself down like that? When you acted like you werenβt enough? Like Tifa somehow compared?
It made his chest burn in a way he didn't recognize at first. Not until now. Not until he realized it was rage.
Not at you. Never at you.
At himselfβfor never making sure you knew. For letting you believe even for a second that his heart had ever belonged to anyone else.
For making those gorgeous eyes of yours ever doubt it.
He exhaled sharply, his fingers flexing against your waist as he forced the next words outββDonβt ever think youβre less. Not for a second.β
His voice was rough, strained with something possessive and raw. βI donβt give a damn who or what you think youβre competing withβthereβs no competition.β A step closer, water rippling between you both. βThereβs just you.β
And then his thumb brushed your cheekβslow, deliberateβbefore he finally sealed that truth with the one thing he shouldβve done ages ago:
His lips pressed against mine.
It was a kiss of desperation, longing made tangible. I felt that possessive heat from his hands in the way his lips moved against mine, in the way his fingers curled against my skin... like he was trying to press this truth into me from every angle. I was drowning in his touch and loving every moment.
Heβd known every feeling Iβd tried to hide... and heβd been holding onto his own for years.
My hands tangled in his damp hair, pulling him closer as if he might disappear if I didn't hold on tight enough. The taste of saltwater and him filled my senses, intoxicating and overwhelming all at once.
His hands gripped my thighs, lifting me effortlessly until my legs wrapped around his waist, locking me against him. Water sloshed around us, but neither of us caredβnot when every inch of our bodies were pressed flush together. Not when his lips moved against mine with a hunger that mirrored the ache in my chest.
His fingers dug possessively into my skin like he was afraid Iβd slip away if he loosened his grip for even a second.
The waves couldβve swallowed us whole right then and I wouldnβt have noticedβnot when Cloud Strife was kissing me like this. Like the world began and ended with the way our mouths fit together.
Every doubt Iβd ever had melted under that single touch.
