In the book Wonderful London, it is suggested that the woman here may be a descendent of "one of the queans of Alsatia". The term "quean" is a wholly derogatory one, the implication being that this woman is either a prostitute, or a miscreant of an unknown variety. But if she could speak to us now, perhaps her story would contradict the rather unpleasant assumptions about her status.”
