I will confess that I'm still not quite sure I understand the reasoning behind Gideon Ofnir's turning against the player character at the end of the base game. my understanding of his dialogue is that he genuinely doesn't believe a true god can be killed, and that our sole role is to continue to struggle and fight each other forever, but...like...to what end? what are we fighting for in his eyes?
my read of Gideon as a character has always been that he sees everybody he meets as disposable once they've served their purpose, that we're sources of information or labor or whatever but then he'll do away with or discard us when our use is outlived, but I don't see what he gets from trying to stop us and preventing the cycle from progressing now, when the Erdtree is burning and every last demigod is slain or about to be. is he that panicked that there's no more cycle of tarnished for him to benefit from, or is he just that scared we might upend the natural order of the world and leave him with nothing to exploit? that feels most likely, I guess, that he legitimately believes we can't kill Marika or Radagon and that we'll have burnt the Erdtree and broken the world for nothing, and he's hoping that killing us will stop things from getting worse? maybe he's acting in the interests of restoring the status quo so the endless cycle of tarnished coming and going from the Roundtable can continue and he can keep using us to learn about the world? I guess that's the most logical motive I can glean from what he says to us, but, still. something about how quickly he turns has always nagged at me, unless this really was him going "shit, they're actually doing it? nobody's ever gotten this far, I have to stop them". but even that seems odd since he's seen us systematically eliminate all the demigods we encounter. how could he see Destined Death as being a bridge too far when we've defeated the likes of Mogh and Malenia?
