About 4 km from Hoi An City (Vietnam) towards Cua Dai Beach is the Bai Mau coconut forest. More than two centuries ago, the people of Hoi An brought aquatic varieties of coconut from the West for planting. Nowadays, the place where these water coconut palms are planted has become a popular tourist spot and is known as the Bai Mau Coconut Forest. The name of this place comes from the fact that before the expansion, there were only about 7 acres (bay mau) of water coconuts in the forest. Nowadays, with the development of tourism, the area occupied by water coconut has also increased and occupies not 7 acres as before, but much more.
In 2008, the Bai Mau coconut forest was recognized by the People's Committee of Quang Nam Province as a cultural and historical heritage site under management and protection. Today, the Bai Mau coconut forest is not only a historical area of special significance, but also a unique ecoregion with an attractive wetland forest system. It is home to many valuable marine animals, including shrimp, crabs and shellfish. Seaweeds serve as a habitat and food source for many types of seafood. Mangrove ecosystems also act as bioremediation systems, trapping and decomposing waste, purifying the water before returning it to the sea.
When visiting the Bai Mau coconut forest, visitors can see many low-roofed houses built entirely of coconuts. Locals living here will happily give a tour and allow tourists to explore this green coconut forest in a peaceful environment, enjoy basket boat rides, watch exciting boat races, skillful boatman performances - basket boat dance, throwing fishing nets.

We have published plant lists for each ecoregion, and added the ability to search for plants within a region.
I’m super excited about this!
There is a big native plant movement nowadays, and people are starting to understand the importance of planting native plants to support native insects and thus support the food web and protect ecosystems.
But unfortunately, a lot of people aren’t planting plants native to their locality. People might plant species native to their country, or better, their state, but just because something is native to your state doesn’t mean it is native to your particular area.
Political boundaries do not correspond well to ecological boundaries, which is where my site comes in!
I have published plant lists for specific ecoregions. North America is divided into 182 level 3 ecoregions, 84 of which intersect the continental US. For these 84 regions I have published plant lists of native plants AND lists of all plants, showing the plant’s status (native, introduced, expanded, extirpated, etc.) in the region. You can also do in-region searches!
