Edit: 1/11/24 It was brought to my attention that some of the language in this tutorial read as fatphobic. This tutorial was originally written and published on DeviantArt in 2011 and I was generally unaware of these issues at the time. I have adjusted the language in the tutorial to hopefully address these concerns, though old versions may continue to circulate. Thanks for taking the time to point these things out to me. This is for all the people who haven't been able to partecipate last times, and I'll also give you all extra tips and tricks to make more diverse stylized character faces!!

understand the properties of the faces and how to make them even in the different views

see different facial features such eyes, noses, mouth.

a drawing tablet + PC or a tablet +stylus (you can use traditional material as well!

1 hour of your time

a drawing program (Procreate, Photoshop, Ibis Pain, Clip Studio Paint,etc…)

pdf files you’ll receive a couple of days before the workshop

My notes from my "Drawing 'Creepy' Creatures" Makerspace class at MICE, I thought it might be interesting to post them here because I don't usually share my process. I printed out fact sheets for different animals and then encouraged people to draw their own animal characters (and even mix different animals together for some fun creature design!).

Today was a learn and practice day. I've been meaning to watch John Muir Laws' tutorial on drawing birds for weeks and just haven't had it in me to sit for a 2 hour video, but it was really helpful.

He talked about his technique for quick outlines when you're sketching out in nature, and then spent a lot of time going over the different groups of feathers that make up birds' faces and wings. That part was really helpful, because it should make it easier to draw/paint birds and actually understand what I'm drawing.
