Dear Normies #2
To those of you who think we can open a door in the middle of winter,
We cannot. There are plenty of other people in wheelchairs who can accomplish this task on their own. However, just like there are a range of flowers in a garden, we are not the same as these other wheelchair users. We understand the difference is not visible; but have no fear. There are a few signs to look for:
If we’re banging on the disabled door button and it doesn’t open, we may need help.
If we scream out loud “Why won’t this f*cking thing open!” We may been help.
If we are looking directly at you and say “Excuse me can you open the door” We may need help.
Sincerely, Li and Jess (and others who may experience the same dilemma).
Keep Your Sliding Doors Smooth & Secure All Year
Sliding doors are a wonderful feature in any home — they bring in natural light, connect you to outdoor spaces, and create a seamless flow between rooms. But like any part of your house, they need regular TLC to function well and stay energy‑efficient.
Seasonal checks help catch small issues before they turn into costly problems. In spring, clear away winter debris from tracks, clean and lubricate with a silicone‑based product, and check rollers, handles, and weather stripping. Summer calls for watching alignment as heat can expand frames, inspecting glass and locks, and making sure everything closes securely. In fall, clean out leaves and dust, test for drafts, and adjust rollers so cooler weather doesn’t cause sticking. Winter poses unique challenges — ice build‑up can freeze tracks, condensation might signal broken seals, and longer nights mean checking security becomes even more important.
Keeping glass, frames, and hardware clean year‑round, tightening loose screws, and scheduling professional inspections when needed will keep your doors sliding smoothly and your home comfortable.

Wanna Hear a Story?
So. Wednesday my door stopped working, but I waited until the morning to call to get it fixed. Then I went to class. When I got back, I hoped that my door would be fixed, no luck. They came to fix it after I called again. I thought I was in the clear.
Then today, @u-need-the-1d and I decided to hang out between classes today. So we went to my dorm to drop off our stuff. My door didn’t work again. A day after it was fixed, the door didn’t work again. Hooray! So I called the maintenance people again, and when one of my suite mates came back, I asked her if we could go through her door. So we dropped off our stuff and walked around a bit. Then we came back to the dorm. I should have expected this, but the door still wasn’t fixed yet. We had class soon. So I called the people once again, and once again luckily another suite mate came and let us in so we could grab our stuff. And right when we were leaving, the maintenance people showed up to fix the door. Anyways, so we both were late to class, but luckily it was all good. Moral of the story is to not expect the maintenance staff to respond quickly and to not leave stuff in a room that you can’t easily get back into.
