Memorize the bathwater, memorize the air There'll come a time I'll wanna know I was here Names on the doorframes, inches and ages Handprints in concrete, at the softest stages

the thing about the whole, Homecoming Photo Legacy of it all is that laura is just some guy until she dies. she is not a popular girl. she has a boyfriend who plays football and she's Active In The Community, and she tries to be kind to people, so they like her, but nobody's really paying attention to her. like, you need to understand --- paranoia or not --- that laura truly believed that being nominated for homecoming queen was some kind of 'carrie' joke being made. it's not who she was. that's not even her real smile. it's so emblematic because it represents what was made of laura after the fact, the mythology that built up around her.
as a sidenote, i've been thinking a lot about donna and everyone (correctly) talking about how she's always trying to emulate laura in the show --- but they tend to think it's because she wants what [she thinks] laura had. i don't believe that. the thing is, when you look at it in context, if any of the show's main girls were going to be Popular In High School, it would be donna: she's pretty, she's an extroverted Oldest Sibling, she's top of their class, her dad's the town doctor so she's Got Some Money but not so much that she seems inaccessible / intimidating like they treat audrey ... just. laura literally dresses like donna. she starts going to church as a little kid because she wanted to go with donna. she worships her as all that is good and 'right' in the world. while there's definitely jealousy on both sides of their relationship for various reasons, overall, donna as Neglected Less Cool Best Friend Sidekick is just such a tacky read: she's just being an asshole. she's feeling sorry for herself because her best friend was just brutally murdered and she's being made to feel like she Never Knew Her Really, and she was already sensitive about that because things had recently been weird between them. she's grieving! there's nuance!
there is also. the lesbianism.
but. yeah. laura is not an 'it girl', or whatever. she has one friend; like, by choice. she doesn't bother people and she doesn't want them to bother her. she's canonically their class's token weird horse girl, for fuck's sake. she isn't even embarrassed about it.
chronically online girl.
having unsupervised access to internet from an early age definitely left a mark on donna, and as most young girls, she uses almost every social media possible. she is the most active on twitter, when she can just vent and post her silliest thoughts and disappear, exactly like a vault.
