the best bel canto comedies are really just…the best
Beverly Sills, Roberto Devereux. New York City Opera, 1971.
For those of you who'd like to try an opera, for free, legally, with English subtitles, I just stumbled across this beautiful performance of Donizetti's gentle romantic comedy, "The Elixir of Love!" It's the story of a simple but honest peasant who just wishes the love of his life returned his affections. When he overhears her relating the plot of an Arthurian legend that includes a love potion, he wonders if such a thing might really exist. Unfortunately for everyone, he starts wondering this on the very day that snake oil salesman "Doctor" Dulcamara arrives in town!
This is a fun starter opera, written in the bel canto style, which most listeners find enjoyable to get into. I haven't seen this specific production through (so, take this with a caveat, and let me know if any of the stage business isn't appropriate,) but from what I've seen so far, it's just lovely!

You all have me obsessing about Lucia now, and I haven't listened to this particular recording in a while. (I really feel like this might be GDS's best Edgardo. And Scotto is surprisingly good. I mean, I like her, but I was skeptical of her singing Lucia, but she's actually quite good. Bastianini is, well, Bastianini.)
For anyone who needs an instant infusion of pure joy into their day (those last 30 seconds, in particular!).
