I woke up one morning and put on my puffed sleeves and threw my hair into a messy pompadour and I went downstairs and Mrs. Rachel Lynde was there and she said âOh good! Youâre awake! Time to meet your new baking powder overlords!â and thatâs how the beautiful coming years brought me the fulfilment of my home of dreams in which I never used any baking powder except Rollings Reliable
big fan of when you peel back all layers of a character and at the bottom of it there's love
why are they doing this? because they loved someone so much it caused the plot to happen. Grief counts btw
ESPECIALLY a big fan of when this isn't enough to make them a good person
@gracewight Raffles.
it's always two distinguished gentlemen saying precisely to each other
woke up this morning, rolled over, and very confidently tried to blow out my alarm clock like a candle. absolutely no precedent for that.
In the year 1450 a priest rolls over and slams his hand into his candle, burning him and sending wax flying all over the place
I had scary dreams last night. They freaked me out. I wish I could go back to bed for a quiet sleep.

I love your new banner/header image!! What is it from? đ
My favourite picture book of Saint George and the Dragon, illustrated by the wonderful Trina Schart Hyman! She also illustrated the edition of Snow White which my icon is from.
Annoyed. This author made Raffles into a rake who is annoyingly obsessed with everyoneâs figures and clearly doesnât respect women, but wants to âsteal their virtue.â (Thereâs a weird amount of cruel remarks about everyoneâs weight and appearance across the board, actually.) Itâs not true to the original stories, and something about it smacks more of modern misogyny than Victorian. Yes, Raffles is a burglar, and I know that going into the stories, and I take it in the sense Hornung intended it, and have fun with it. But this other thing feels gross and not fun, and if it continues in this vein much longer, I might find a different audiobook.
Mortified. My reblog accidentally picked up a prev tag which I did *not* agree with or want to promote. If you didnât see it, good.
we're over halfway through 2026. what are everyone's most beloved books of the year so far?
Bunny upon seeing dozens of stolen jewels: Good stuff ey! :D
Raffles, trembling with emotion: "GOOD STUFF"? đ đł HAVE YOU âđ NO POETRY đ⤠IN YOUR S O U L? đŠđ
âDo the riches of the ENGLISH. đ LANGUAGE. đmean đ¤Śđťââď¸nothing to you?! 𤯠GOOD STUFF?!?!â

My own use of the word âpasticheâ in the previous post has me musing on how much this word has changed in meaning, except for one case where it hasnât at all.
A âpasticheâ was once an attempt by a different author to capture the voice and spirit of the original authors work as closely as possible in the context of a new work. Nowadays a pastiche is a parody - unless it is a pastiche of Arthur Conan Doyleâs Sherlock Holmes canon. This has been such a beloved past time so continuously since the original stories were published that in that context, the meaning has been handed down with the practice, especially among those who belong to formal Sherlock Holmes societies or organized publications. Kind of like how some Old World terms have been preserved in small New World communities, because of insularity and continuity.
And Rafflesâ canon is such a cousin to Sherlock Holmesâ canon that âpasticheâ felt like the appropriate word in this case.
Listening to a Raffles pastiche. Seems well written so far, though the narrative voice is different from Hornungâs, of course. Bunny is off on a rather anxious errand, and is dealing with his anxiety by grumbling about everything that comes to mind. Thus far, he has vented his ire upon:
- the preponderance of pickpockets in London, and how it is getting to the point where a gentleman has to keep mousetraps in his pockets if he wants peace of mind while shopping
- what a lot of taxes there are these days, and how the legislators who introduce these taxes are no better than the pickpockets
- the shop windows all changing over to their Christmas displays, rather earlier than Bunny thinks they should, indicating a society more eager to serve mammon than God
Bunny old chap, do you detect any irony in the commonalities of your complaints? đ¤
