in honor of black history month here in the US, i'd like to highlight something i think is pretty exciting.

last year, opera lafayette (nyc and dc) and operacréole (new orleans) collaborated on producing the very first performance of morgiane by edmond dédé. dédé was a prolific black creole composer hailing from new orleans in the 19th century, and professionally active primarily in france. despite his success as a composer, his four-act french grand opera morgiane was never performed in his lifetime, and was lost for over a hundred years, until its manuscript was discovered in a library and painstakingly transcribed very recently.

and now, you can hear it too:

opera lafayette has just released a full, live recorded album of this work, which may very well be the very first full length opera ever written by a black american composer in history. i had the good fortune to be able to hear one of the performances in person last year, and i quite enjoyed it; but more than that, i believe the opera itself, as well as its new recognition and revival, is an accomplishment worth sharing, and worth celebrating.

(more on dédé and late 19th century new orleans musical culture deserves to be said, but is beyond the scope of this post. this article is a decent, if only-scratching-the-surface, place to start.)
