oh boy oh boy oh boy my favourite bit of my favourite production of my favourite opera has finally escaped onto youtube time to subject you all to the best segment of the met’s 2014 production of borodin’s prince igor.
(sorry for my Image but kocán is magical in every role, khan konchak especially.)
to give you a quick walkthrough of what’s happening here and why:
igor (leather jacket) has done the thing you do in crusader kings 3 where you declare war on somebody with a far superior army to you and are then surprised when you are immediately trounced.
konchak (bald cap for some reason) is the owner of the far superior army. this is literally the only time he is on stage in the whole opera but he still invariably steals the entire show.
at this point igor is in the steppe having been captured as a hostage. he is now khan konchak’s “guest”, with heavy emphasis on both the quotes and the word guest.
in the vanilla show he is just sulking on a holiday that he hates being on and isn’t hallucinating anything. but in this version he’s unconscious and making up a holiday that he hates being on, partly because he can’t deal psychologically with the trauma of his son also being dead.
thus: he’s in the steppe, he’s miserable, he’s hallucinating, he’s unable to deal with death, and he can’t leave. hmm.
the dances are, as ever, an excuse to show off your ballet company. it is usually presented as igor being essentially treated to a “show” by konchak but in this version i assume he’s just enraptured by a bee buzzing around one of the poppies.
but anyway. prince igor.
favourite opera, favourite production, favourite scene. also two of my favourite Guys in the two major roles in the scene but i digress.
honestly the whole opera is an Absolute Selection Of Bangers which barely need a plot to hold them together (which is good because igor has very little in the way of a plot). the opening chorus is an especially strong punch musically speaking even if no directors seem to know what to do with it movement-wise. (especially not with poor igor but abdrazakov really carries all of it off perfectly.)

cannot lie. the characters that actually have the most similarity of all the characters that i can currently think of are peter stamatin and reginald bunthorne. completely different Feels to it but there is something distinctly That Way about bunthorne saying "what's the use of yearning for elysian fields when you know you can't get 'em, and you'd only let 'em out on building leases if you had 'em?"
Every time I think the fortnightly opera stream post is going to be short it ends up being massive. Anyway if you like Il viaggio a Reims you're gonna get two
