THE MALADY OF DREAMING DIGIZINE, WRITTEN, EDITED AND DESIGNED BY ME!
Six months of my life have been dedicated to bringing the MALADY OF DREAMING Digizine to fruition. It has been tiring and sometimes frustrating, but it has satisfied me and brought me more joy than I can express. Every time I completed a piece of writing in its paged form, I waited for several days, then return to look at it with fresher eyes, and was overcome with pride because I had made something that I liked—that I loved—and had no desire to change it because it was already the best it could be. I admired every page because I had seen its growth from what the first two or more drafts looked like. It felt like freedom to be perfectly happy with what I made, my mind and vision no longer sharp with criticism and judgement, and able to appreciate all my efforts.
NIGHTBLOOMING, the first chapter of this beloved project, is a trove of nocturnal expressions, some which first saw the light of screen on Substack and evolved during the course of six months, some which remain as they are from Substack, and some which are exclusive additions to the digizine.

"With publishers and libraries at odds over e-book licensing’s long-term expense, hold times, and ethical concerns, a new platform called Briet is pursuing an open-access approach. Briet invites publishers to sell their e-books to libraries outright, providing universal, perpetual access. Several independent publishers including PM Press, Punctum, Sideshow, and Silver Sprocket are on board."
"An initiative of the Brick House publishing cooperative and the Flaming Hydra collective of journalists and artists, Briet (rhymes with plié) is named after, and an homage to, the late French librarian Suzanne Briet. Notably, the open platform arose not long after judges decided in favor of publishers in a lawsuit against the Internet Archive, determining that the IA’s scanning of copyright-protected print materials and lending of the digital copies constituted copyright infringement and was not fair use as the IA contended."
Authors, you spent months writing your masterpiece, but if the formatting is off, readers won’t get past page one. 📖❌
Most new authors think a PDF is 'good enough,' but that’s the fastest way to get 1-star reviews for its lack of readability. If you want your book to look professional on Kindle, Apple Books, and Kobo, you need to understand the power of Reflowable Layouts.

So glad to finally see some momentum building to push back against ebook pricing models for libraries. I wish it didn't take huge libraries throwing around "we have millions of dollars" to give us any hope of change, but such is life.
I was in charge of ebook and e-audio purchasing for a small library several years ago, and can remember when they started phasing out their "one copy/one user" perpetual licensing model for popular titles. It seems the leasing model has only gotten more predatory since I left that role. Back in my day we could choose to pay a little less (but still a lot, maybe $30) for the metered access licenses, and the OC-OU licenses were the really extortionate ones but hey, as long as they continue to host that title on their platform your patrons can access it.
Pageless Fairytale
'Where roses deck the flowery vale, There, Infant Jesus, we thee hail!'
