I always breathe a sigh of relief when the FNA sample is all lipocytes!
I have a colonoscopy and endoscopy coming up in two weeks. Iâm kind of scared. Going under anesthesia weirds me out. People having access to my unconscious body makes me anxious. Not having memory/control of what I might say coming out of anesthesia gives me anxiety too. And on top of that, Iâm worried about what they may find. Iâm worried about what they might not find. My desire for answers is equal to the size of my fear of getting terrible news.

I wrote out this whole post and then tumblr deleted it before I could post it. Love that.

@cancerbiophdâ - Interesting and humorous posts about the journey to becoming a PhD, from applying to graduating, and now working in industry as a research scientist. Also my little brother is working as a lab tech (systems biology) and considering a PhD at some point, Iâve sent him some helpful/relatable posts from this blog before.
@i-wanna-do-somethingâ - Top tier memes and also some med student content; not gonna lie I've sent TikToks to my friends that I've seen from this blog.
@study-vanâ - Gorgeous posts and I learned about French medical school. I had no idea how intense the competition was after you get into school! It's kind of like the opposite of US med school (my first 2 years are Pass/Fail and pre-clinical grades/rank are not on our transcript). Anyway, hoping all the best for them and wherever they end up studying.
Iâve talked to my family doctor about getting Autism testing. When she asked me to explain (terrible at) and in 45 minutes she concluded that my Auditory Processing Disorder is whatâs causing my âissuesâ and that I shouldnât be tested when I can just go back to my hearing specialist. I donât know what to do as I need her referral for my school to get me free testing with a local Uni. I feel like anyone I tell just believes Iâm a hypochondriac since I canât explain myself. Do you have any advice?
That sounds really frustrating.
What kind of support do you think you need and/or want at school (or in general?) What kind of difficulties have you been facing? It might help to make a list of the difficulties youâre facing and/or the forms of support you think might help you. Then you can reference your list when talking to your doctor. This might help clarify that your needs are not being adequately addressed by just an Auditory Processing Disorder diagnosis.
Also, would it be possible to see a different doctor? A doctor who is familiar with autism or has experience treating autistic patients might be the best option. Is there anyone in your community you can ask for recommendations for a doctor with experience with autism?
I am sorry you feel like people believe youâre a hypochondriac. I know that feeling. But you know yourself best. Keep advocating for yourself!
Readers, do you have any other suggestions?
- Lissa
