I had to print out paperwork for K earlier this week (my printer is a vicious beast that no one else in the family will use) to have her mid-term evaluation for her internship. Yesterday she showed me the office manager's eval sheet. It was STELLAR! They gave her high ratings across all categories, and literally offered her a permanent job once she graduates. I was so excited! Overdue for a little good news, I guess.

Breath, little one
Around 5 yesterday we got a text from K, an emergency c-section was happening right when she would ordinarily have left the office. When she got home, about an hour later than normal, she was very happy. Showed me a picture of five tiny kittens, three orange and two dark. She was given a limp, orange, cyanotic* kit and worked for half an hour rubbing, warming, trying to get its breathing and heart stabilized. She succeeded. Her first hand-on experience with saving a life.

Our relief vet is working this week while our regular vet is on vacation, and her 13-year-old daughter is also here to shadow us because she wants to be a vet some day and wanted to see what the job was really like. Cue this conversation
Kid: What does the 'N' mean on the paper?
Vet: It means the cat is neutered, you remember what that means?
Kid: He can't have babies.
Vet: Right. We call it 'neutered' for boys and 'spayed' for girls.
Kid: But...what about nonbinary cats???
Vet: *tries not to die laughing*
Me: We get those too! Sometimes we have to spay AND neuter them, or neuter what looks lile a girl cat, or once there was even found a cat who had nothing at all! Its gender was 'cat'.
Kid: :O *mind is blown*
This is the same kid who told a client the coolest thing she'd learned here so far was that if cats eat fleas, they get buttworms.
So overstimulated by my work colleague that I have disappeared into my vacationing groomer's suite to hide in the dark in one of the dog crates.
This is vet med, people. A bunch of neurodivergents banging into each other a lot and sometimes getting to cuddle the animals.
It has been hours and my head is still exploding at the fact that a colleague, who is not a member of the medical staff, had information on the wall next to her desk that anyone who walked by could see. This is info that could get us FINED by a government agency and I cannot, for the life of me, figure out WHY she even thought she needed it.
This week is not over until it's midnight and by god, I might not make it.

How to study
Daaaaamn, sitting outside on the lawnchairs going through K's flashcards for pharmacology is . . not too bad. Our only problem was that we got distracted several times by birds in the oak tree above us. One redbellied woodpecker (with its red head, the name is bizarrely misleading), one Baltimore oriole flashing orange, another little fellow whose name I have forgotten.
Anyhoo. IV, IM, SQ, PO (routes of administration) I've never talked about drugs so much in my life. My girl is the flashcard queen; we buy them in bulk.
Lost a dog today because an anchored foreign body with 2 areas of perfing. He was 4.
I haven't eaten since 9am. It's 6:30.
I peed once this morning.
Vet Med fucking sucks a lot, but still... I'll be back here tomorrow, doing it all again.
All those veterinary technique videos are like "Today I'm going to teach you how to take the temperature of a cat. First, you need an exceptionally well behaved cat that does not actually exist anywhere in this world. I got mine from an alternative dimension."
