Okay, but.... Dex lowkey losing it over Bittyâs nicknames for him and Bitty full well knowing the effect they have. He keeps coming up with increasingly elaborate pet names, highlights include âcinnamon raisin bread,â âmarshmallow pumpkin pie tart,â and âorange spice carrot crumb cake.â Dex explodes.
Okay but lemme be real for a second because?? I have told No One this but DexBitty is one of my guilty pleasure ships. Itâs legitimately a ship I want to see more of but know I likely never will so have to create content for. I love the idea??? That Bitty calls Dex increasingly sappy things and Dex is just like âThat meâ when he hears them and heâs slowly losing his shit over it is just Absolutely My Shit
âHey PumpkinââYeah, Bits?ââCarrot cakeââYeah?ââButternut muffinââEricâ and by this point Dex is red in the face but Bitty canât see because Dex has his head pushed into Bittyâs shoulder and Bitty is just smiling because he, absolutely, knows what heâs doing Every Single Time
Here lies William Poindexter, deceased by bf who calls him sappy pastry themed names
takes place in year 2, all pretty canon compliant for a bit
the fighting between dex and nursey is bad, like in canon, so chowder goes to bitty
bitty goes and does his mediator thing and it doesnât really work, so instead of letting it go, chowder insists on tag-teaming the sitch
now, dex seems pretty wary of bitty, so chowder knows he should probably have bits go work on nursey, but chowder might have a tiny crush on nursey and might want to spend more time with him
maybe
probably
and bitty doesnât seem to mind dex so he agrees, saying dex reminds him of a few of his daddyâs players and knows how to talk his language
(chowder isnât close enough to bitty yet to recognize the red flag that is comparing dex to one of the football players from bittyâs past)
so bitty and chowder get coffee pretty frequently to meet and discuss what theyâve learned.
but the thing is, this has stopped being about getting the d-men to get along anymore, at least for chowder. theyâre freshman, everyoneâs kind of terrible as a freshman in one way or another. theyâre both already maturing and growing as people, and chowder has it on good authority (bitty) that jack has talked to the boys himself, and probably had more of an effect. nursey and dex are already getting along better.Â
and yet. the coffees keep happening.Â
yes, chowder likes hanging out with bitty, but heâs starting to worry bitty will realize heâs bordering on obsessed with nursey. how could he not be though, when nurseyâs so cool! and handsome! but also a goofy mess and a really emotional person, in private.Â
but bitty doesnât bring it up. he just smiles at chowderâs latest stories and counters with snippets of his own dealings with dexâhow he taught dex to make bread this weekend, to surprise his mother over break; how dex taught him how to unclog the shower the other night; how dex got so angry when bitty told him about an argument he had with his father.Â
(chowder doesnât quite put it together, but he knows these conversations mean something.)
âwe should all hang out,â chowder says one day, maybe early november. âall four of us. might be good for them.âÂ
âthatâs a great idea,â bitty replies, looking up from his twitter feed. ârans and holtzy are throwing a party on friday, we could all pregame in my room?âÂ
so thatâs how chowder ends up sitting on bittyâs bed, pressed up against nursey, a tervis tumbler of whipped cream flavored vodka in his hand.Â
(bitty, it turns out, has an entire stash of weirdly flavored liquors heâs inherited from people like lardo and shitty who buy them, try them once, and hate them.)
it all happens in a weird, slow motion mess the way most things happen in pregames.Â
first, chowder notices that dexâmr. âi only drink beer and whiskeyâ poindexterâis sipping on the boxed wine bitty loves. even chowder thinks it tastes like terrible juice, but dex is choking it down for some ungodly reason.Â
second, either nursey pregamed the pregame or he didnât eat beforehand because heâs barely touched his drink but is all up in chowderâs space: leaning against him, touching him, laughing in his ear. chowder doesnât mind in the least, but his cheeks have been hot since he sat down.
and third, dex and nursey are beingâŠweirdly cordial. even on the ice, where theyâve learned to put the team first, they donât act like this. but they keep exchanging weird looks, which makes chowder nervous.
a drink in, bitty decides to put on his beyonce party playlist, to âget them in the party mood.â nursey chirps him for it, but dex just smiles.
and of course if music is playing and alcohol is flowing, then bitty is dancing. chowder wishes he could dance like bitty, all confident and flirty, but his sister always tells him he dances like a pogo stick or a white suburban dad.Â
âyou gonna dance with your man?â nursey asks in an undertone, and chowder is bewildered.Â
âmy man?â he asks. âwhoâs my man?âÂ
âbits,â nursey elaborates. âi know itâs on the DL, but dex and i have been talking and we know about your coffee datesâŠâÂ
âthose arenât dates, those are- those are business meetings,â chowder says, because how else would he describe them? âwe talk about- about important things.âÂ
âitâs okay,â nursey whispers. âi mean, obviously, but also, like, we wonât tell anyone-â
âweâre not dating!â chowder says a little too loud. it wouldnât be a big deal, normally; one of the baristas at annieâs thought they were a couple the other day and it was a little funny then, totally harmless. but not coming from nursey, the guy chowderâs been pining after for months now.Â
bitty stops dancing, eyes widening. dex is looking between them, bewildered.Â
âoh.â nursey looked a bit ashamed, a bit confused. âuh, sorry for assuming?âÂ
âno, itâs fine,â bitty says quickly, clearing his throat. âwho wants to do dirty girlscouts?âÂ
dex chokes on his wine. âexcuse me?âÂ
nursey relaxes a little. âoh, sweet, we used to do those at school. shittyâs obsessed with âem.âÂ
âalright, boys, on your knees,â bitty says, and chowder watches dexâs face go from pink to cherry red. he rummages through the collection of bottles on his desk and pulls out a half-empty thing of peppermint schnapps. âi already stole the whipped cream and chocolate syrup just for this.âÂ
chowder and nursey hop off the bed to kneel next to dex. chowder goes first, taking the shots of syrups, schnapps, and whipped cream while bitty laughs and squirts a little extra cream onto the end of chowderâs nose.Â
âiâll get that,â nursey says, and before chowder can react nurseyâs licked the whipped cream from his nose. bitty laughs again and dex tells him thatâs gross, but chowder thinks he might pass out from how turned on he suddenly is.Â
âcâmon, licky mcgee, your turn.â chowder watches in horror and wonderment as nursey takes the syrup and the schnapps alone, adamâs apple bobbing once, tantalizingly. nursey casts him a look with hooded eyes, and chowder feels like he might explode.Â
then he looks over, at dex, who looks like heâs feeling the same as bitty stands over him and pours schnapps into his mouth, followed by the whipped cream. dex chokes on it a little, some spilling out the corner of his mouth, but he wipes it away and stares at bitty chugs schapps straight from the bottle.Â
and that finally clicks for chowder. all of it, really. he can see the longing in dexâs eyes, the way bitty is showing off, the suggestion in nurseyâs expressionsâŠ
âyou wanna take a walk?â he asks nursey, probably too loudly. but dex and bitty are either ignoring him or hoping nursey will say yes, so when nursey does chowder has him out of the room and alone in seconds.Â
they donât walk farâjust around the block where no one is watchingâbefore chowder takes nurseyâs hand.Â
and chowder does not believe in things like subtlety or miscommunication. âthis is what you want, right? because I really, really like you.âÂ
and nursey, astounded, answers chowder with a kiss.Â
(it takes them a while to get back to the haus, which is now alive with partygoers. but when they duck into the kitchen, dex has bitty up on the counter, the two of them kissing languidly among the abandoned fixings for sugar cookies. chowder laughs, softly, and lets nursey lead him into the living room, where they both dance like pogo sticks at a suburban barbeque.)
BittyDex, the first on my list because I Love BittyDex. Iâm also gonna post all these on AO3 to a single work (the actual anthology) so that I have a place for all of it.
Their hands linger and Dex isnât sure how this happens, honest to God, he doesnât know. Everything was and then it wasnât, and then he was kissing Bitty and Dex really didnât know how this had happened. They were only baking, for fuckâs sake, they were just making bread and cookies and pies and spending so much time together in this one enclosed space that neither one of them thinks about it when it happens.
Dex doesnât think Bitty is thinking about it. He was almost certain, because Bitty doesnât pull away. He brings one flour covered hand up to gently cradle Dexâs head to press more into this kiss, soft and slow. Dex doesnât really know who pulls away first, but he knows that he pushes in for the next kiss, a calculated and deliberate movement. Thereâs no one else but the two of them in the entire world in this moment.
Then, the timer for the pie goes off and theyâre startled apart.
âIââ Dex doesnât know what to say. He watches Bitty hurry to pull on oven mitts and pull out the pies that were baking, his mind everywhere and nowhere at once. He keeps thinking about Bittyâs lips, soft, a little chapped the first time but wetter the second time. Had Bitty taken a moment to lick them?
âGoodness, we got so carried away!â Bitty breathes. He looks back at Dex, his eyes soft, and pulls off the oven mitts. Dex still doesnât know what to say, because this is new to him and itâs probably not new to Bitty and what even is this?
âAre you alright?â Bitty asks. Dex nods, a little dumb, and steps closer, back into Bittyâs space. He wants to kiss him again. He knows his face is red, it has to be, but itâs not red like when heâs angry at Nursey or red like when heâs drunk and fuzzy, but red because Bitty makes him hot in ways that shouldnât be talked about. Bittyâs got a softness about him that makes Dex want to stay near, a warmth and kind of light that makes him glad to be the one Bitty chooses to kiss.
âCan I kiss you?â Dex blurts out, and he feels like itâs unnecessary when Bitty smiles and laughs a bit.
âYes,â he replies, âbut I think itâs a little late to ask.â
Dex manages to smile a bit himself, even as he presses in close again to kiss Bitty once more. This is their third kiss in the span of a few minutes. Theyâve barely talked but Dex feels like this isnât the time for words, and some part of him thinks that it really is. Even if he had come to terms with himself they needed to define this beyond the kitchen. When did Bitty start to like him like this? When did Dex feel the same? What are they?
âWe donâtâdarlinâ, look at meâwe donât have to be anything yet if you donât want to be,â Bitty sas, as if reading Dexâs mind, or maybe Dex said that out loud; he didnât know when he had opened his eyes. And he didnât know why Bitty calling him such a simple petname made his stomach flutter either. Bitty comforts him, though, and holds Dexâs hand in his.
Dex thinks he wants to be something with Bitty. He thinks he wants to date Bitty, if Bitty will have him. He thinks he sees himself navigating this, being gay or bi or whatever he is, he thinks he sees himself figuring it out with Bitty.
âIââ Dex pauses, breathes, swallows the lump in his throat and Bitty rubs soothing circles in his hand, ââI want to be with you? Shit, I think youâre really hot, and youâre just. You.â
Bitty smiles and chuckles, a low sound, something Dex didnât really expect but he loves it, he really does, hadnât he always?
âYeah. You too,â Bitty nods, agrees, and Dex thinks this is nice. Theyâre just two people, who like each other, who want to be with each other.
âThe dough for the bread is probably done,â Dex mumbles. Bitty glances over at the bowls of dough theyâve made, which had been rising for the last thirty minutes or so. He looks up at Dex, who thinks that itâs kind of hot when Bitty looks up at him but part of him knows that Bitty could bench him with no problems.
âWe should get that,â Bitty says. But he doesnât move. His fingers are still laced together with Dexâs and they donât really pull apart.
âYeah. We should.â
The thought of them being we and not I or you or me makes Dexâs heart flutter and his face redden more, heâs sure of it, because heâs hot, hot for Bitty. This is their space, as opposed to being Bittyâs. Dex was lucky enough to be privy and invited into it, and he was lucky Bitty wanted him to be there.
They move, eventually, together and in sync, and they bake bread. They bake bread and pies and cookies and cupcakes and they smile and they laugh and they kiss.
And Dex thinks that heâs glad he gets to be with Bitty.
