So another thing about Deerpocalypse that might just be me being weird or might be something for real, is that everyone involved is being "courted" in different capacities. I seem to be getting far less chosen one/spousy/kissy stuff than you and Edderkopper are
You know what ā I think that that devotional modality is almost an orientation with me. (Itās not *exactly* romantic love, fwiw, thatās more of an extremely good metaphor, but itās closer to it than to anything else. And thereās an element which maps so closely to sexuality that any caviling amounts to a distinction without a difference. In fact, fuck it, there is no difference. I mean, itās sexuality plus, itās sexualityĀ and or becauseĀ or for [Stuff/ThingsāImportant ⦠IDK, I lie awake nights puzzling about the inadequacy of the romance and sexuality lexicon]Ā but still, letās call a spade a spade, even if itās a Swiss army spade.)Ā The point is, the fundamental urge to [all that] overlaps almost completely with the fundamental devotional urge, for me.Ā And I have a bunch of thoughts to do with what thatās about. #arenāt you glad you asked
Iām a huge control freak and intense repression is my major successful neurotic adaptation. I walled off my feelings, very deliberately, spent my teens and twenties building a great big apparatus of nope and setting it on permablitz, because having big emotions hurt like hell and made me feel like an ass and I needed to stop shaking and get shit done. I noped out almost completely by age thirty. So nowadays experiencing intense passionate emotions is a healthful sign: it means the ice is cracking, Iām living authentically again, and if Iām struggling with those emotions, thatās fine, itās just learning how to wrangle them properly instead of by walling them off and pretending they arenāt there. And my direct spiritual/devotional work ā listening to my gods, learning all these kinds of un-repression healing lessons, humility, etc, etc ā almost always comes down to figuring out how to surrender, to let go, to stop control-freaking.Ā For this work, there arenāt many lot of languages/modes/tools I can make any headway with and tbh sexuality is kind of the obvious standout great fit. Mine is, anyway; a lot of very specific things about it work that Iām not even going to go into rn, but if I did I swear it would be interestingly relevant and illustrative of my point: itās a fit for my devotional life because reasons,Ā okay.
In contrast, for lots of people, their damage isnāt about too much control but rather just the opposite: too little control. Like, maybe itās about having been terribly, terribly hurt in the past because they didnāt have enough control. And the resultingĀ primary personal growth and healing project occurs in a totally different discourse than mine: not about letting go, but about taking hold ā about working on self-determination, autonomy, setting boundaries, asserting human dignity. Often it seems it makes good plain obvious psychological *sense* for a person to relate to a deity in a child-parent mode, a student-teacher mode, a collegial among-equals mode, etc because those are the most natural instinctive fits as ways for them to do their spiritual work, to live their way into becoming the person they should always have been, to learn how to receive the kinds of love and care theyāve been denied and starved of. (Iām not saying that people in that kind of situation canāt do that same healing work with a deity in a romantic/sexual context, they totally can, but I guess I speculate that that path might feel more difficult, non-obvious, strenuous/scary/hard Ā vs being, almost, the path of least resistance the way it is for me. ⦠ #wow ahaha yes I see what I did just there)
So at the most basic level I think it falls out in the way it needs to fall out for you because of how youāre constituted and what your project is. If courtship feels like itās not your division at the moment, maybe itās not a fit for whatever you overarchingly need to do or focus on or aim at? Thatās not a considered assessment or an opinion about you. Itās just one possibility among who knows how many.
Everything above is a gross oversimplification.
In reality:Ā there are more than two kinds of people, damage, work. Most of us probably have some of both the kinds of damage I just described. Both the kinds of people I just described have all sorts of deity relationships and do very well thank you. AndĀ probably there are very few simple or textbook single-note relationships. I have multiple dynamics in my own devotional relationships, I could make a whole list, itās not just āfile under romance and sexā and I wouldnāt put my money on those being numbers one and two even. Like I said up top, it is that, but itās that in aid of other Stuff/Things. So the ideas above donāt describe actual peopleās realities.
Iām putting the line of thought out there anyway ā and tagging it beyond my station with abandon ā because if even one person out there ⦠look, the topic of why some people relate to the deities they love in one way and others in another way can be hard to grapple with. Especially if 1. itās something youāre not used to thinking about and 2. it feels extremely important to think about. I may have put in some hard ruminating time myself on this topic #cough #did you mean 1H14Ā and this is one of the ideas I arrived at and yeah, itās a limited theoretical model thatās helpful more in principle than in practice, but Iām a theorizing person and I get a lot out of that shit, so.
