Toudou Jinpachi has two things in his heart: hill climbing and Makishima Yuusuke. Though really, they are two concepts hopelessly intertwined—a mountain conquered without Makishima by his side would never strike a fire in his heart, and his rival’s green-and-orange beauty shone the brightest of all when he poured his heart and soul into a steep ascent.
And so they climbed.
~~~
Or, Toudou and Makishima finally reunite and race each other again on the slope of Mt. Hakone.
The best arc is here. No arguments, this one is the best. The amount of pages I have saved is way past 30 and it's going to be PAINFUL to have to sort through them.
Key Characters:
Onoda Sakamichi:
Ok, I have something shameful to admit. I was so zeroed in on the toumaki that would take place that I completely forgot the crash happened right here T_T I thought it was like day 2 or something lol. In my defense, it's been like 11, 12 years since I directly interacted with the beginning of this series. At least I remembered there was a crash TAT.
If anyone has to get mixed up in a crash, Onoda is both the worst option and the best option. Worst because he's an integral part of the mountain stage, best because he's literally done this before.
I think it's because he's done this before that Onoda's teammates have so much faith in him being able to catch up to the front from last place. They know that if he has a mission, he will do whatever he can to accomplish that goal. Onoda's reliability is probably my favorite part of his character. I love the determined look he always gives, that's my son <3
That stunt of riding on the edge of the gutters has always impressed me. The pack was like a trap, but he found his way out. The way he rode reminded me so much of the mountain bike arc too T_T My other favorite arc.
Very proud of Onoda for overcoming this challenge and accomplishing his task! Good job Sakamichi, now your dad can go ride his last race with his boyfriend <3
Makishima Yuusuke:
Maki-chan, oh Maki-chan. The way he hides his true feelings is always frustrating to me. I understand he doesnt like feeling embarrassed, and it's to save the feelings of others, he doesn't want his teammates to feel bad that he doesn't get to race with Toudou. Kinjou felt really bad for him, I can tell T_T especially as captain, he tries to help his teammates fulfill their individual goals in addition to winning as a team.
Even Naruko can tell how much Maki wants to jump ahead to race Toudou. Naruko tangent, but I always love how straightforward he is with his feelings. Once he saw Maki hold back on racing with Toudou, he retracted what he said about waiting for Onoda. He understands that every decision is to bring the team across the finish line.
But once he got to go ahead, he's the happiest he's ever been. The way he's screaming Toudou's name with a big smile on his face as he does everything to catch up to him TAT Maki-chan, you can be passionate when you want to <3
Toudou Jinpachi:
Our Sleeping Beauty Mountain God. This just occurred to me but his riding style is exactly opposite from his loud personality lol. Maki's style can be considered "unconventional" just like himself, but Toudou is the last person you would expect to be quiet lmao.
The tears Toudou sheds for Maki, sad or happy, will always be delicious to me. Watanabe-sensei really brings out his sense of drama whenever Toudou is involved. The poetry that is his inner monologue is also very beautiful. I quote: "This is so fun, Maki-chan...!! It's really just like a dream. If it were possible, I'd wish to continue like this endlessly." The way Toudou thinks about Maki-chan is unlike anyone else, he always compares their time together as a dream, a blessing. That continues even in spare bike, just having a simple conversation about a dream Maki had last night is a "miracle" T_T Everyone deserves their own Toudou tbh.
Onoda and Makishima:
The way Maki waited for Onoda says a lot about how he needs and relies on Onoda. Although Teshima is also a climber, he wasn't strong enough to be a regular yet. The team needed another strong climber to become well-rounded. Maki didn't only hope for Onoda to catch up to the team, he expected him to get there. Maki knew him well enough to know that he would fulfill any task entrusted to him.
Is this the first time Makishima calls him "Sakamichi"? I feel like Maki hasn't directly referred to Onoda by name or otherwise until this moment. And by his given name too TAT Maki-chan you're too much for me sometimes. I love it when he gets fiery!!! <3<3<3
Makishima and Toudou:
One of my favorite dynamics in yowapeda, truly. Toumaki is unmatched. They are such opposites in personality and riding style, but their passion and talent for climbing is what brings them together. They really are made for each other, my dear Yamagami and Peak Spider. We know how Toudou has pretty much never lost a race until he met Maki, so their continuous 50/50 rivalry is another thing that I love about them <3<3<3
The way they both were at their worst condition when Toudou went ahead to take the mountain goal, then they both elevated to their best conditions when Maki caught up with him at the front is honestly so beautiful. Racing with giant smiles on their faces and screaming each other's names. My goodness these two are so in love <3<3<3
I saw @/sanguinesucker point out in a post about the toumaki timeline. The first time the meet is as second years, but Toudou says "These three years were a lot of fun." Maybe he says that because it feels like they've been racing together for three years instead of a year and a half. Or maybe they were fresh second years when they met, so it still felt like they were first years? And if you round up that's three years???Those are my excuses lmao.
Major Events:
Onoda gets caught up in the crash, but catches up to the front from last place.
Makishima fulfills his promised race with Toudou.
Toudou wins the day 1 mountain goal, Makishima comes in second.
The reveal of the winner always feels so satisfying! Watanabe's setup for these scenes is always so cool. No words, the results are right in front of our eyes. Toudou winning makes sense. He's racing on his home turf, and Maki spent a lot of energy catching up to him. Some might call this fight unfair, guess they will have to race more in the future on an even playing field~
Misc.:
I really liked that everybody went to the crash site to check on Onoda when he didn't come to the supply point. Teshima and the rest pushing him on his back TAT I love the support they all give him!
And Team Sohoku's reaction to Onoda catching up with them all the way from last place T_T Especially Makishima, he's so excited to have the support of a fellow climber so he can fulfill his promise with Toudou.
I like that there's an emphasis on Arakita, too. He's the one person taunting team Sohoku and saying he's not gonna come. Thinking about how Onoda gains his respect later makes me excited!!!
I can't end this post without mentioning Onoda's encounter with Midousuji! I am intrigued by/interested in the midosansaka dynamic, so I will definitely talk more about them in the future. Onoda is surprisingly shippable 0_0 This is the first time Midousuji encounters Onoda, and even though he didn't go all out to stop him from going ahead, Midousuji already sees that Onoda is "not mass-produced".
