26th February 1770, death of Venetian Baroque composer and violinist Giuseppe Tartini, best known for his "Devil's Trill Sonata". Tartini himself stated that the work arose from a dream he had in 1713, when the Devil had appeared to him, and played Tartini’s violin with such great skill and ferocity that the composer was left breathless. The performance was ‘so wonderful and so beautiful, played with such great art and intelligence, as I had never even conceived in my boldest flights of fantasy. I felt enraptured, transported, enchanted: my breath failed me, and I awoke’. Upon awakening Tartini tried to capture the performance the Devil had played to him, but claimed it was "so inferior to what I had heard, that if I could have subsisted on other means, I would have broken my violin and abandoned music forever."
