1. A Sweet Kiss

MAMA WOLF IS ON THE JOB!

Inanna knows MC is pregnant before anyone else.

MC doesn’t know why but Inanna has been following themaround like a shadow for the past week, watching them closely. Muriel can tellsomething is wrong, but she won’t tell him anything.

Finally, after various signs, MC confirms their pregnancy;when they tell Muriel, Inanna simply huffs and gives Muriel a look that says “duh.”

She stays close to MC for the whole pregnancy, walking MCthrough the market and the woods, growling at anyone that gets too close,especially when MC is further along.

She sits at MC’s feet around the hut and will huff and whine (talking like a husky) when MCdoes something Muriel had asked her not to, like cleaning out the coop or goingdown to the river to get water on their own. MC just sticks their tongue out atInanna and calls her a tattletale.

The day MC goes into labor, Inanna is obviously on edge andwon’t let MC leave the hut even when they need to go to the shop. She tellsMuriel to get ready and he reluctantly goes to find Julian.

She sits back during the delivery, knowing she won’t be of greathelp.

When the baby is born, MC calls Inanna over to greet thebaby. She’s nervous, but she rests her head on MC’s stomach and lightly licksthe baby’s fingers after giving them a sniff.

After that, they’re inseparable.

When MC lays the baby on the floor to play, Inanna is closeby, making sure she doesn’t roll away. She lets the baby pull at her fur andtake naps curled up against her belly.

When the baby starts to walk, it holds onto her fur andInanna walks step-by-step with them as the baby wobbles forward.

She plays with the baby when they’re steady ontheir feet, running around the woods together, teaching her how to read differentanimal tracks, what berries and foliage is safe to eat.

Their hand squeezes Muriel’s so tightly that the tips of his fingers are bright red, but he knows that the pain he bears is nothing in comparison to theirs.

Tears stream down their face, and another contraction hits…

Another?

It was too soon, far too soon for the baby to be coming, for the contractions to be coming this quickly, hitting this hard, but the doctor and the midwife are talking so quickly, Muriel doesn’t even know what’s really happening.

“Muriel.” They weep, another scream tearing through their throat, insistence that it was happening, and it was happening now. Doctor Devorak pushes her knees apart, talking in hushed, quick words to the midwife, and then turns to them.

“I need you to breathe, alright? We’re about to start pushing.” He doesn’t wait for a response, “They’re nearly dilated - we need to move, now!”

“I’m sorry.” They hiccup, the sobs racking their chest, “I’m sorry, Muriel.” They squeeze his hand, ever harder, and cry out, keening their back and lifting their knee, “I can’t do it. I can’t do it.”

He didn’t know how to console them. Their pregnancy had not been an easy one, but this…he didn’t know how to make it better, how to make the hurt go away. He runs his free hand over their forehead, opening his mouth to say something, anything, about how they didn’t need to apologize or how they were doing so well, how it was all going to be alright.

“Sir, we have to ask you to step out.” The midwife approaches him, “The pregnancy has already been complicated and -.”

“No.” He says, voice hardly a rumble, “I’m not just…” He couldn’t leave them, not now, especially not now.

“Muriel.” Julian says, putting his best doctor voice on, “We wouldn’t ask you if it wasn’t important.”

Muriel has always wanted a big family. He wanted…wants, children to give the life he never had. He never counted himself a selfish man, but this…this was something that crept into him consumed him from the inside out and convinced him that maybe…maybe he could have it.

He never, never would have left them alone in that room. He can’t help but hate himself for listening, and when Julian steps out, looking dead as night, the lower half of his face still covered by his mask, he expects the worst, his throat feeling too small and his hands numbing, but Julian...

Julian says, “It’s a boy.”

Muriel huffs a laugh, the tears falling before he could stop them, and he opens his mouth to say something, anything, but Julian holds the door open for him, pulling his mask down. 

Meeting his son was...cataclysmic. It was tears and gentle touches and laughs from his partner, deep circles around their eyes as the hold his hand, watching as he holds their baby. It was gentle kisses on the foreheads of the people he loved most, his partner, his son, and the doctors are tired, and they’re tired, and the baby starts crying, and Julian invites him to stay in the room while they sleep - both baby and parent.
