The logic of the AI in this game has been delighting me for nearly 20 years. That blond commoner is dead. Why?
I stole a valuable cup from the bartender who was behind the counter on the far left of the picture
The bartender saw this and immediately got scared
I assume this set the status of all commoners in the area to "hostile"
I am allied with the Hammerites, so the commoners became their enemies too
The Hammerites immediately started killing all civilians. Most ran away, but the dude in the chair had no chance. Nor had the one who's lying on the floor.
And so, five seconds after Garrett had stolen a cup, the Hammerites had massacred a tavern for no good reason.
Now let's scale that logic UP UP AND AWAY.
I am allied with the Pagans too, bc you can do that. The Pagans and the Hammerites hate each other by nature. The woman who's staring at me is a Pagan shaman who just zapped some Hammer priests. The guards hate me, but the second I attack one of them, they all get killed by my allies. The stone people and the Enforcers try to kill everyone anyway. The female thugs somehow blame Garrett for every dead body by default, but once they're angry they will fight whoever they can. The male thugs just disappear at some point. And the commoners somehow manage to piss everyone off by existing.
Note that each rod with a red gem belongs to a fallen Hammerite priest. The bodies just get cleaned up by the game after a while.
Stonemarket looks like this every single night if you stick around long enough, especially in the second half of the game. I didn't kill any of these people. It's simply the ultimate party district. I don't even have to do anything. Except maybe throw in an oil flask or a mine from time to time to spice things up.
And the best part is, a significant portion of the dead drop valuable items. Which I can immediately sell and buy more oil flasks and mines. Because Bertha and Marla somehow resist the temptation to join the never-ending free-for-all that is Stonemarket.

A tapestry depicting the fall of King Gruliac, seen during Garrett's venture into the Sunken Citadel in Thief: Deadly Shadows.
The Kurshok were an ancient and proud civilization that once held dominion over the surface world and were favored by the Trickster god (the primary antagonist of Thief: The Dark Project), who bestowed King Gruliac and his people with great power, prestige, and glory. But Gruliac grew ever arrogant and greedy, proclaiming himself "greater than the [Trickster] himself." The Trickster grew angry with the king's arrogance and caused their entire civilization to be buried deep underground where neither sun, nor moon, nor rain could reach. The once great Kurshok cities fell to ruin, the royal lineage eventually died out, and their culture, history, and even language (note the hieroglyphic inscription in the upper right corner) were gradually lost to time. Eventually, even the existence of the ancestral ‘aboveworld’ became the stuff of myth, and sincere believers were deemed ‘headsick’. The tapestry depicts the fall of King Gruliac and the subsequent ruin of the once mighty Kurshok civilization symbolized by the golden crown of power, a gift from the Trickster. Gruliac lost his hand and when he attempted to fight the Trickster and wrest ownership of it; although Gruliac managed to keep the crown, his hand—as well as his people—were destroyed.

Well, that’s the Thief series over and done with. What a wild ride, and by wild ride I mean:
(Thief 1) Mazes, mazes and more mazes.
(Thief 2) Greatest game ever shits bed in final level.
(Thief 3) So many loading screens.
(Thief 2014) Why is this Assassins Creed game called ‘Thief’?
Гарретт в моде при любой погоде ) full size
Something I really like in Thief 3 is that you get to explore and learn the city, and as you get familiar with it and get items like the climbing gloves it starts to feel completely safe. There are guards and enemies still, but you know all the easy ways around them. You get complacent. Then you piss off ONE WITCH and suddenly your comfortable stalking grounds are terrifying again.
