Mary and Cora could have been such good foil characters. Everything is there. Available. Almost begging JF to use it.

I like Julian fellowes for 3 things:
Inventing thomas barrow
Making richard ellis his boyfriend
Letting edith outrank mary
It is actually devastating that Mary really believes that her family—especially her mother and grandmother—will fight for her (and win) re what should be hers by right.
and then one-by-one they all have to tell her no actually! Marry the man taking it away from you, or marry someone else and get out. And make sure you’re nice to Matthew, because god forbid you don’t get married at all and should have to rely on his charity for your entire existence!
