sorry to be on reddit but the answers on this are insane because everyone is saying 16m should get his own room and then one room for the boys and one for the girls. how is a 14 yo and 8 yo sharing a room any more sensible than an 8 yo and 5 yo sharing a room.... privacy is important blablabla but the idea that there needs to such strict gender stratification is crazy omg 14 and 8 vs 8 and 5?? just because 5 is female?? crazy

i think people also tend to vastly underestimate the diversity in 18th/19th century europe, especially in big empires, especially in port cities. heathcliff is found specifically in liverpool, which was, at the time, the largest city for slave trade in england. i dont think it's completely absurd to imagine that emily brontë would have been aware of that
