The wonderful branches of Cryptomeria japonica var. sinensis (Chinese cryptomeria) were worn to a smooth finish by the many children who enjoy sitting on them. This variety is native to China where it is used for forestry. The tree grows on deep, well-drained soils subject to warm, moist conditions. This specimen was growing at the Royal Horticultural Society Garden Wisley, Surrey.

#2275 - Cryptomeria japonica - Sugi
AKA Japanese Redwood, or Japanese Cedar.
A very large Cypress up to 70m tall, endemic to Japan, but cultivated in China for so long that it's often considered native there as well. C. japonica is the only living species in the genus, but others are well-known in fossil deposits from much of Eurasia.
Fast-growing in areas with deep rich soil and mild moist climates. The timber is highly prized, and in Japan it is often grown around temples and shrines.
