Before the dumpster showed up, I spent twenty minutes outside doing something that would look, to a neighbor, like a small mental break. Standing in the driveway. Looking straight up. Pacing off distances. Actually measuring the distance from my garage door to the property line with a tape measure.

Here's why: nobody tells you that the truck delivering your dumpster needs way more room than the dumpster itself. The container might be 8 feet wide, but the truck backing in needs a straight, clear approach — we're talking up to 60 feet for a big container once you count the truck length and the angle it drops the thing off at. And overhead clearance is no joke either. The truck bed tilts up to slide the container off, so anything within about 20 feet straight above your spot — power lines, a tree limb, my neighbor's ambitious pergola situation — is a real problem, not a hypothetical one.

I have a tree limb that hangs lower than I'd ever consciously registered until I was staring up at it thinking "would a large steel container tilting upward hit that." (It would have. I moved the delivery spot four feet to the left.)

The part that actually kept me up the night before: will this thing crack my driveway. Short answer, it can. A loaded roll-off, especially one full of shingles or dirt or anything dense, is putting a lot of weight through two steel rails onto a fairly small footprint. Concrete handles it fine generally. Asphalt is the one to worry about, especially in warm weather when it softens — the rails can actually press visible dents in. I have asphalt. It was July when I found this out.

So I did the thing every guide says to do and every part of me assumed was overkill until I did it: laid down sheets of plywood where the rails were going to sit, and told the company where the boards were before delivery so the driver could actually place the container on them.

Nothing cracked. No dents. I took a smug photo of my undamaged driveway that no one but me will ever appreciate the significance of.

One more thing I almost skipped: I have a septic system, and for about thirty seconds I considered just having them place the dumpster wherever was most convenient on the side yard, which happened to be roughly near the leach field. Don't do this. A loaded truck rolling over a septic field is a genuinely bad time.
