Welcome December!! 🎅🏿🎅🎅🏽

So, this is my college Notion page in this start of semester. I'm feeling more motivated and organized now, I was testing so many templates and created a dashboard to college, personal life, media lists and my code space. I'm very happy with the results and I hope stay motivated until the end with this organization system.

About other things, in these days I was watching The King's Affection drama (I'm just obsessed with it), falling in love with the HOME music from BTS and trying to rest more in my freetime. Also, I was thinking about start to do some study vlogs on Youtube and start to do some code challenge or "days of productivity" challenge. I'm just thinking about it, but I hope be able to trully start it.

ED 319 - Teaching of Reading for Secondary Teachers

Methods the content area teacher can use to help students comprehend course materials more effectively, to determine reading needs of students and to adapt instruction to their needs. Field experience is required.

ED 361 - Special Education and the General Classroom Teacher

An introductory course covering the range of handicapping conditions, designed for the elementary or secondary teacher to develop an awareness of the emotional, educational and social implications of handicaps and to formulate practical applications when working with students with exceptionalities in the general classroom.

ED 380 - Practicum in the Secondary School

This practicum course assesses students’ knowledge and application of teaching methods for integrating literacy/reading (ED 319); meeting the needs of diverse learners (ED 361); and the use of technology to design, deliver, assess and communicate instructional goals (ED 483) in a secondary school setting. This course has a scheduled field experience component of a minimum of 30 hours.

ED 483 - Educational Media Technology 

Focuses upon the education/instructional uses of audiovisual media including computers and related technologies. Emphasis will be upon each type of hardware and software and its use as well as the subject-matter areas that most easily integrate the technology.

EN 345 - The Teaching of Literature 

This course explores theoretical and pedagogical issues related to teaching literary texts in secondary English classrooms. Emphasis on classic and contemporary texts, including works by women and writers of color and/or ethnic diversity.

EN 370 - American Literature I

Since I shared my Fall 2019 courses late into the semester, I thought I would be proactive in sharing my (tentative) schedule for next semester!

Wow, y’all! I really could not be more thrilled for these classes!

French 220 High Intermediate: I really struggled with being motivated for French class in high school. However, after taking French 120 in the fall, it completely changed my perspective. I’m particularly excited for this course because I know a few of my classmates from 120 will be joining me!

Latin American Studies 291 Decolonizing the Museum: This class is cross-listed with art history and the museums concentration. A potential career path for me is becoming an intellectual and cultural property lawyer. I learned more about this field in Museums in Society but I am super excited to continue this study next semester!

Studio Art 163 Drawing 101: I wanted to take this class last semester but it conflicted with my First Year Seminar’s screening. I don’t know what to expect but I am glad to be enrolled in an illustration class again! I missed drawing!

Theatre 316 Contemporary Canadian Drama: Y’all!! I am so so pumped for this class! As a Canadian and a theatre lover, it checks so many boxes! The course description mentions many different forms of theatre, all of which sound interesting. I cannot wait to broaden my view of theatre with this course!

Art History 278 Race & Gender in the History of Photography: As a prospective art history major, I’m always scouting out more art history courses to add to my schedule. This one in particular caught my eye! I am quite unfamiliar with photography history so I am curious to learn more!

Theatre 208 American Musical Comedy: From Gershwin to Sondheim: Another theatre history course! One of my favourite genres is musical comedy so obviously this course piqued by interest! Additionally, it is taught by Ellen Kaplan, the director of Smith’s production of Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime and co-director of UMass Amherst’s The Magic Flute (more on these shows later!). Professor Kaplan is so fun and I’m excited to be spending more time in her presence!

Theatre 200: T200 was an incredible experience last year so I’m back for more! I don’t know what I’ll be working on yet but I hope it in somewhere in the costume or scenic department!

Here are the classes I’m taking this fall! I’m super excited about all of them!

SPECLANG 178A-01 - American Sign Language

I don’t know if I ever talked about it on here, but in my sophomore year of high school I took an american sign language class on the weekends because I was super interested in sign language and deaf culture. So it’s super exciting that I can finally get back to learning a language I love so much. This course will fulfill my language requirement, and I’m super excited to learn even more about deaf culture.

ARTHIST 163 - Queer America

I initially signed up for this class because I needed some more credits to qualify for full-time student, and it looked interesting. I’ve only gone to one class so far, but it looks like it’ll be super cool. It’ll cover american queer art from the 19th century to the 21st century, and I’ll get to learn more about queer studies which I’m super stoked for!

PHYSICS 15 - Stars and Planets in an Habitable Universe

This class is also going to fulfill a science requirement that I have. And it looks like it’ll be a super chill class where I’ll get to learn all about astronomy, other galaxies, and if there are other planets that are habitable for humans. Honestly, it looks like the class will be a walk in the park and also pretty interesting. The teacher is super cool, and we might take a field trip to the telescope on campus to look at planets.

FILMSTUD 120 - Superhero Theory

This class was a last minute addition, but I’m super stoked for it. It’s basically a class all about superheroes in the comics, movies, and tv shows. I like to think it’s an excuse to watch some Marvel and DC tv shows and movies while reading comics I never checked out! I also love this professor so it will likely be one of my favorite classes from this quarter.

Write everything down, and then talk to yourself about what you’ve written. Don’t just copy everything the teacher is doing or saying, explain it to yourself like you’re an alien from another world. And teach someone else (preferably a pet like a fish) what you’re studying.

Search out examples or information which supports what you’ve taught yourself. Site them in your notes.

The text books are rubbish, but they hold examples or the reasons why a math equation works a certain way.

And if you just don’t get what your professor has already tutored you on, YouTube it. There are so many YTbers who will do history information, and thank the RNG gods math tutorial. But always look for alternative methods for doing the same old thing - sometimes they’ll show you shortcuts, or explain things a different way and you’ll get it.

Also, beware Courses which do not assign homework. They will give out extra credit, but you will only receive grades for exams.

And do your best. Remember, a bad score isn’t the end of the world. Some Uni’s will let you retake a class at a discounted price (it sucks but it aint the end of the world) It’s not that you didn’t learn enough, but exams are a bitch written in some forbidden language and deciphering them is a skill in of itself. 

Even though classes are wrapping up in a few weeks, I thought it would be better late than never to post what courses I’ve been taking!

I was actually taking an Art History course: “Collecting and Display In Europe and N. America” instead of Studio Art Foundations, but after two weeks, it was terminated by Smith due to insufficient enrollment. However, my advisor (Ed Check) and I were able to find another art course and Professor Ferrario was super understanding about letting me into the class!

Additionally, I took Theatre 200, which I will explain in a later post!

I really love all my courses! During high school, there was always one or two classes that I would dread going to, but at Smith, I’m really excited to show up each day! The professors are engaging and the content blows my mind!

That has been calmly popping up in my brain the whole way home today. Let me give you context. I arrived on campus early today and chilled in the car, continuing to listen to my audiobook, before heading in to get things set up for class. Two of my three students are already there. Yay!
