Art I
This course focuses on the elements of art and design, color theory, vocabulary. Problem solving and decision making are also a main focus. Students will also learn about art history.

Sketchbook: Students will be required to work on a sketchbook. Sketchbooks will be given periodically throughout the semester. Each sketch will have a theme, which will be given a week in advance. Students should spend at least an hour on a sketchbook.
Project one:
Sugar Skulls: Students create cardboard skulls and cover with tinfoil and India ink. Due: October 28th.
Project two:
Stained Glass Mythology: Students explored mythologies from around the world and illustrated them in cut paper. Due: December 23rd.
Project three:
8 Way Self Portrait: Students create a likeness of themselves using oil pastel, colored pencil, magazine collage, and cut construction paper. Due: March 31st
Project four:
Spray Paint Collage Self Portrait: Students drew themselves from a photograph using a grid. They used Spray paint collage for the backgrounds and painted the portrait on top. Due: June 2nd.
Art II
This course is to further develop the concepts and skills learned in Art I. Students will create two-dimensional media using graphite, charcoal, pastels, color pencil, acrylic, watercolor, and ink techniques. Students will develop an ability to make effective choices concerning media, techniques, subject, interpretation, and composition.

Project one:
Crushed Can: Drawing of crushed cans of student choice in colored pencil. Due: October 28th.
Project two:
Charcoal Still Life: Self explanatory. Due: December 23rd.
Project three:
Art II Self Portrait: Students cut their original photographs into 49, 1inch squares and enlarged each one onto a 4 inch matboard square. The objective of the project is for students to master color mixing and painting techniques. Students are only allowed to paint with the 3 primary colors (yellow, red, and blue), white and black. Due: March 31st
Project four:
Palette Poetry: Students choose a poem and illustrate it on recycled wood from palettes. Due: June 2nd.
Art III
Skills learned in Art I and Art II are incorporated and enhanced through this course. Each student will use prior knowledge in the previous courses to investigate more thoroughly two-dimensional and three-dimensional projects. Students must show initiative and good work habits in addition to being interested in art.

Project one:
Unread Letter Collage: Students write a letter to anyone they wish. This letter is not read by anyone. Collage techniques are used to integrate the letter into a work of art inspired by the letter. Due: October 28th.
Project two:
Reverse Oil Painting: Students created self-portraits by removing paint using Q-tips and cotton balls. Due: December 23rd.
Project three:
Road Trip: Students use various media to create artwork with a map as the working surface. Due: March 31st
Project four:
Transparent Image Self-Portrait Oil Painting: Students created transparencies using computer printouts and clear packing tape. These images were projected on their faces and photographed. The resulting image was then used to generate a large oil painting. Due: June 2nd.
Drawing
Students will develop their observation and accuracy skills through a variety of assignments such as still life, perspective, portrait, and figure drawing. Students will develop compositional understanding by applying elements of design to their sketches and drawings.

Depict correct proportions on faces and figures (due Feb)
Create interesting compositions, focus on details, texture and reflections (due April)
Use all of the above to create your own self-expressive drawings (due May)

Project one:
Basic Drawing Combos: Vases/Face drawing, upside down drawing, negative space drawing, contour line drawing. Draw at least three different shapes: sphere, cube, pyramid, etc. Due: October 28th.
Project two:
Optical Coloring: Consistency in the use of colored pencils, 3 colors. Consistency in the use of a ruler and a compass for measuring and drawing. Positive and negative space understanding. Use of eyes to eyeball the curve of perspective. Due: December 23rd.
Project three:
Still Life: Choosing from one of your rough drawings, decide upon a final composition for your colored pencil drawing. Reference artists from the past and present and look at how they have used the genre of still life to create strong and dynamic art. Due: March 31st
Project four:
Human Figure: Major skeletal section, head, torso, pelvis and legs, arms and shoulders. Hands, feet, contour and outline, blending. Cloth and how it folds over the figure. Proportion of figure, gestural drawing, facial features. Due: June 2nd.
