After the tour refueled with some gelato from La Vecchia Latteria, it was up to the Duomo of Siena.
Note, we did not go into the Duomo of Siena. Nor was our tour supposed to go into the Duomo of Siena. Those amongst us who were upset by that maybe should have read the tour description a little closer and booked a different tour.
So, instead of going into the Duomo, our tour took us past the Duomo and into the Museo della Contrada for Contrada Selva.
Contrada are the "neighborhoods" or districts in Siena, of which there are 17, which served more like caste systems--think the Montagues and Capulets--than neighborhoods. Over time, the feuding and rivalries became ritualized in the Palio horse race that continues to take place in Piazza del Campo. Each contrada has its own church, where the horses are blessed before the race. The "palio" is actually the flag that the winning contrada is awarded.
So we didn't get to go into the Duomo; instead we got a bit of cultural history. Boo hoo.
