La Specola è la sede dell'antico osservatorio astronomico dell'Università di Padova: è posta sulla Torlonga, la maggiore delle due torri dell'antico Castello di Padova. È alta 49,59 m che con l'antenna parafulmine arriva a 53,30 m per 252 gradini (dati dallo spaccato nord della torre Specola eseguito da Giovanni Silva nel 1911) . La Torlonga era un'antica torre di difesa, edificata nel IX secolo d.C.
