Some clarifications for non-Jews
Hey non-Jews of all stripes, let's talk for a few minutes about some misconceptions and knowledge gaps many of you apparently have that lead to both accidental and intentional antisemitism. These are all misunderstandings that have directly or indirectly crossed my radar, so let's see if I can clear some of them up. Hopefully you learn something and/or check your biases. Jews, feel free to add on to this!
If you have to talk about your country's Jews mostly in the past tense, your country did not in fact treat its Jews well. Maybe there was a point in its history when it did, but that time is no longer relevant.
"I don't hate Jews, I just hate Zionists" - cool, so you just hate 80-90% of Jews and a bunch of Christians. That's not an improvement.
"Zionism is evil" - ok what definition of Zionism are you using, and how does it relate to the most commonly used definition(s)? If you can't answer that, kindly stop and educate yourself before proclaiming your hate. The definition I've seen most commonly used nowadays is believing that Jews have a right to self-determination in their ancestral homeland, which is the land now called Israel. Specific borders are not included in that definition. If what you mean is Kahanism, yes, that is indeed evil, but it's not what most Jews mean by "Zionism."
Jews have been hated for being literally everything and its opposite, sometimes at the same time. Consider whether that makes any logical sense before you suggest that maybe antisemitism is rational since it's been around for so long in so many places. (Hint: it doesn't.)
"Even [respected historical figure] was antisemitic" isn't the "gotcha" you think it is. Antisemitism is so baked into Western society that until at least the 1950s, you'd probably be hard-pressed to find people who didn't have some latent antisemitic beliefs! Sexism is also baked into most Western societies; that doesn't make it right.
Dig into any conspiracy theory and you'll find antisemitism. You just might not be familiar enough with the dog whistles involved to see it immediately.
Saying or implying that Jews are in any way responsible for antisemitism is victim blaming and antisemitic. That includes anything along the lines of "Jews should x if they don't want hate." Would you say or imply that people of color are responsible for racism? This is no different.
If you constantly call out Israel for human rights violations while ignoring the many other countries and groups currently committing equal or worse violations, then you're not really a human rights activist; you just hate Jews.
The words "Jews" and "Israelis" are not synonyms. Anything you say that implies they are invokes dual loyalty tropes and is antisemitic, in addition to being wildly incorrect. There are several million non-Jewish Israelis, and 55% of the world's Jews live outside Israel and have little to no effect on Israeli politics or policies.
To Jewish ears, calling for intifada is like calling for a mass lynching. Don't. "From the river to the sea" isn't any better, as Hamas' charter explicitly calls for ethnically cleansing Jews from that region.
Judaism is not just Christianity without Jesus and with extra holidays. It is not a mere precursor to Christianity or Islam or any other religion. Anything coming from a viewpoint that it is one of those things will be bigoted.
Jews view being "God's Chosen People" as more like being "chosen to do the dishes" than any form of superiority.
Jewish Voices for Peace is about as Jewish as a Jewish star Christmas tree ornament. Seriously, the majority of its members and even much of its leadership aren't actually Jewish, and most of its statements and events related to Jewish practice are way off base. See this and that for further info.
If you only know 1 or 2 Jews, don't assume that they're representative of Jews/Judaism as a whole. Judaism is an ethnoreligion with TONS of variation in beliefs and practices among its members, not a dogmatic monolith.
"Goy," plural "goyim," can be derogatory, but more often nowadays it's just a regular word meaning "non-Jew." If the context isn't insulting, assume the best.
The original Biblical meaning of "goy" is simply "a nation," usually referring to a non-Jewish nation. Even though its vernacular meaning has evolved over the millennia, it has never had anything to do with slaves or cattle or whatever else TikTok is claiming.
Many Jews are uncomfortable with non-Jews calling themselves goyim, both because of the word's potentially derogatory nature and because white supremacists have co-opted it for things like the "Goyim Defense League." You're best off just saying that you're not Jewish.
All Jewish holidays have a fixed date on the Jewish calendar, but not on the Gregorian calendar. Don't expect anything to line up exactly or even closely from one year to the next.
Chanukah is not Jewish Christmas. It has nothing whatsoever to do with Jesus or Christmas. Presents are not the point of the holiday. It is not an attempt to overshadow anyone or anything. We've been celebrating it for over 2000 years.
DO NOT do a Christian "Passover seder." The kind of seder that Jesus would've had bears almost no resemblance to what Jews do now, having a Christian seder is horribly culturally appropriative of our semi-closed religion's practice, and Judaism has nothing whatsoever to do with Jesus. It's extra offensive given the history of Christian antisemitic violence in the lead-up to Easter, which usually falls out around the same time as Passover.
I hope you found this informative! Jews, I'll be on the lookout for your suggestions for additions to this list; once I have a handful, I'll reblog this post with said additions.
Okkkkk so it was brought to my attention by several of people that there’s an account out there, I guess is trying to cancel me?
If you came across their post, let me explain what happened. I made a post I think two or three days ago, with the prompt “they bring you gifts” or something like that I can’t remember the exact name of it, and in Ghost’s portion of the story, I wrote he brings y/n patch from foreign uniform. Literally like maybe five words max, that’s it, I didn’t go into details on that, no graphic description, no character bragging scene, nothing. I just extremely briefly mentioned it. And I guess that really rubbed that person the wrong way as they decided I’m not educated enough to know what it means when soldiers hand out “patch from foreign uniform”. And for that I present to you the answer I received from Google:
Now I’m not a military personnel, and I have my share of doubts that this other person is either, and maybe we have been researching on different sides of the Internet on what patch-exchange means, and how soldiers in real life obtain “foreign patches”, but I think one thing we can say for sure is that there is more than one way they can achieve that goal, other than ripping it from a dead body as this other account is trying to accuse me of promoting (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong). And in my original post that you guys can also feel free to refer back to, I did not say a single word that Ghost has killed the “foreign uniform” from whom he got that patch from, I merely wrote “he brings you (as in y/n) patches from foreign uniform”, and I intentionally did not went into details with this act because I know I do not understand the entire history of this action and thus chose to use a more vague description that I decided can be viewed in a more positive way, as my research has told me.
I also think it’s a very canon-appropriate action as the TF141 in the original timeline has went on missions with multiple international alliances, and thus they would have received patches that their other allies have gifted them as symbols of friendship, and if the Ghost in my story decides to hand those over to their imaginary partner, y/n, as gift, it would also probably be fine for all parties involved.
I have chose not to respond to this person previously to escalate the situation, and simply blocked their accounts. I do that because I have decided if you have been offended by something I’ve wrote offhandedly in such a small scale, then it’s very likely you would be offended in a much larger scale in the future as I’m very active in posting (once every day). Our worldviews are simply not in the same circle, so it’s probably in both of our interests to not come across each again on this site, and I believe this is the original purpose of that “Block” function. Then, I simply used my right as an internet user to rant, without mentioning their names, after I deleted their comments from my post so no one can trace back to them and harass them on my name, and this person now decides I can live rent-free in their mind, and used their second account to snapped my original story post, and my rant post, and the conversation I had with one of my followers under my rant post, and reblogged it to BOTH of their accounts, hoping to achieve something that I don’t even know what they want.
Oh and I forgot to mention they also brought up the Russian Ukraine war as a way to show me people are dying on the front line, and my answer to that: I don’t have anything to do with that. I didn’t start that war, I didn’t fought in that war, I didn’t harm anyone under the name of that war, but I see you are currently actively trying to do so. My blog and my account is strictly a politic-free platform. I’m here to entertain, and my audience is here to be entertained, I believe most of us (as in, myself and my audience) are here to have fun and to take our minds off of the difficult real world lives, if we want to get involved in politics and all other complicated topics, there are better platforms for that.
Now I’ve been on tumblr for long enough, even if I haven’t been posting long enough, and I know how shit goes down on this platform. And as my followers who have informed me of this situation, that this person has reblogged their original defamation post of me several times (I guess the first post didn’t bring them enough attention so they just kept reblogging it hoping more people would see and come after me? I don’t even know at this point lol), I have blocked both of their accounts for the reason I’ve clarified above, and they will continue to be blocked, and this is my way of not escalating the situation, and I hope this person will realize starting or participating in cancel-culture is not something you should be proud of, especially on a matter you don’t even have full knowledge of. We either live in harmony, or we go our separate ways, that is the mature thing to do, not to reblog a cancelling post 900 times on one day hoping you will get enough people to agree with you and to go on your crusade of harassing someone you know nothing about, for a topic you BARELY know anything about.
Again, I have decided not to publicly list out their account names, opposite to what they have decided to do to me, and I hope this post will clarify anyone’s bias about me as a person and a writer, that might have been negatively impacted by the other person’s post.
Lastly, if you are entertained by my stories, it would be my greatest pleasure. If not, I will aim to do better. I hope everyone have a wonderful day and a bright future ahead of you.
