“Circumscribe” comes from Latin “circumscribere,” a combination of “circum” (around) and “scribere” (to write or draw). Literally, it meant “to draw a line around.” It entered English in the 14th century, first used in geometry to describe drawing a boundary around a shape, then expanded figuratively by the 16th century to mean limiting or restricting something's scope, power, or freedom. ✏️

Its geometric root is still alive today. In math, a “circumscribed circle” is the smallest circle that can contain a given polygon, touching all its vertices. 🔵
