A byler-coded true story of my time in highschool.
I resisted so much not to put comments about byler in the middle of my sentences because that is what encouraged me to write this story after two weeks of feeling like an imposter for relating so much to this community because I haven't actually had a real queer experience. Living in a theocratic country with parents trying to protect you from the law was probably also significant to why I rarely talked about or manifested as bi/pansexual.
Here it goes.
I've never truly expressed queerness other than that month where my best friend and i use to hold hands and make out at 17. I had a huge crush on her since 10th grade and she knew it.
She kissed me on a spontaneous dare of mine one time during PE the first time, and I found myself thrown into a giddy world of romantic fantasy. She was a bit toxic, but she was kind to me and understood me --back then at least. It was also my first time having a crush on a girl. I had kissed another friend before for practice, but that had been purely for the XP.
I felt that our friendship was different from how we were with the other 3 in our friend group. My optimism yet sadness locked perfectly into her cynicism and anger. She had so much of it. We fought a lot, and made up with compassion. It was like we both cared so much about what the other person thought of them. Maybe I'm projecting on her though, I'm not sure. But for a while, she felt so real.
In 12th grade, when we all had to study for entrance exams, the library became our hub. One person would snatch a table at 7am; we'd study, have lunch, study, go to class and then sometimes hang out after. I remember the tension becoming more obvious. There were moments where you could tell that a touch lasted too long not to mean anything. We talked about things we couldn't share with anyone else, because they wouldn't understand. Did dumb shit make music videos and doodle on each others textbooks. I even helped her with her boyfriend problems, while secretly pining for her. In my head, there was near to no chance. I knew she had had a girlfriend before that, but it didn't mean it would happen to me. She was just a really special friend, and I still deeply care about her happiness.
At a friend's birthday party that year, we kept glancing at each other, dancing, smiling, touching. Her perfume was intoxicating. There is a group picture of that night with us holding hands behind the sofa. After the picture, my hand still in hers, she pulled me into the bathroom and pushed me against the wall. I don't know for how long we were making out. I couldn't believe this was happening. It felt like a dream.
I thought I was so in love. I don't know if my mom could tell, but I eventually came out to her one day in the kitchen, excluding my crush. She was pretty confused about it, and gave me the usual "it's a phase" line. But the worst of it was that other than that, she only asked me not to tell my dad. I was so upset. Why would my dad not understand?
