Guac and Chips from Tortilleria Nixtamal
When moving out here (New York) I always had a hard time finding some legit Mexican food. Though I found a couple of spots I that enjoyed a lot, I find my self to always go back to Tortilleria Nixtamal.
So I had mentioned this place in a earlier posting Nom and Photo Booths. Tortilleria Nixtamal, is this cute little Mexican restaurant tucked away in Corona, Queens. The first time I went there was at the tail end of winter and I had a really bad craving for Mexican food. It was on my list of places to go on Forsquare and I thought why not. I was very skeptical whether or not it was worth the trip, because not only was the place out of my way, but it also felt like such a hassle.
When I finally arrived at the restaurant, it was undergoing construction with bare sheetrock walls, and various construction projects happening on the patio. Its bright red and yellow walls gave the place a lot of character and a fun feel. The staff was very friendly, and service was surprisingly quick.
It was love at first bite. Everything is fresh, perfectly seasoned, and the presentation is very well done. I think one of the best things is that they make their tortillas fresh in-house. I like how people can buy tortillas to take home.
Some of the things I had and really enjoyed:
Guacamole - pictured above (it comes with guac, salsa, and chips)
Steak Tacos - steak, onions, and cilantro. Can't go wrong with that.
Al Pastor Tacos - the pineapple adds a nice touch
Shrimp Tacos - I think that this little guy has some heat, but nothing that is on the SPICY scale
Chipotle Tamales - this baby does pack heat, but its good. It was a nice blend of both chicken and pork, and oh so delicious
Milanesa - you do need to allow 15 minutes for this, but its worth the wait. Everything was super delicious, oh so filling. It was a lot of food, but it was also oh so good!!
Though I haven't tried everything on the menu, everything does look good, and people only have great things to say. They also serve Mexican Cola, you know the good stuff made with real cane sugar.
If you live in the area or just visiting, this place is a must to check out. There are two locations Tortilleria Nixtamal and Taqueria Nixtamalito. I've never been to Taqueria Nixtamalito, but based on the website it looks like a standing booth and not a sit-down restaurant. I like the experience you get from Tortilleria Nixtamal. It maybe a trip, but a trip well worth it.
